What is the most recent successful mascot create?

I saw this thing on TV. Definitely this.

Tracer from Overwatch and Inklings from Splatoon.

Knack if you are delusional I guess.

EDIT: I guess that red cat thing from Yokai Watch too but, I don't care about it so I forgot.

Ding ding ding

This isn't true though?

That said, Knack does qualify for the purposes of the discussion, depending where we draw the line for success.

I'd say the Squid Kids meet the criteria far better. Don't think there's been anything close to it this year so far.

As far as im concerned, once MGS4 released on PS3 Nathan Drake then became the face of the system.
And shifted right over to PS4 once it was announced.

I really wish sony could find a way to leverage him more outside just promoting Uncharted itself though.
Maybe more stuff like this

Though I think if Sony started using him as a full mascot they should go with this

Look for marketing purposes.

They are joking (I think). Neogaf jokes.

I believe so, but there are always weird anomalies like bundled copies making unpopular games sell like crazy on a popular console.

Have to question how famous the squids from Splatoon really are if no one seems to be aware they're actually called inklings.

The OP didn't even seem to know they existed, going hard in on 'inklings' would surely have caused nothing but confusion,

I see those Clash of Clans characters everywhere, especially the blond barbarian dudes and the skeleton with the bomb.

I think it's important to ask when considering a mascot...

"Can someone who hasn't played the game recognize the character?"

If Yes

"Do you have to be a videogame enthusiast to recognize the character?"

In the case of Knack, there may be a handful of people who didn't play the game and recognize the terrible character but only because they watched the Sony E3 press conference where Knack was one of the central reveals along with the PS4.

In the case of the soda guy from Sunset Overdrive, I doubt anybody would be able to pinpoint that unless you've played Sunset or Rocket League (where it's an addon).

Squid Kids might be it, although I'm not sure if they fulfill the second criteria. I've never played Splatoon, don't have a Wii U, but I know who the squid kids are and you don't have to be a videogame enthusiast to have seen art or drawings of them, because they took off immediately with the fan art/fan drawing communities.

If Minecraft had a central mascot then I'd go with that. Maybe just the 3D, 16-bit block is the minecraft mascot, or the ghoul or whatever those skeletons are. Most adults that I know who haven't played minecraft are very familiar with it because their kids or their kids friends are really into it. But the game lacks a central mascot, as far as I can tell.

Nathan Drake's the only interesting designed character on current gen.
I can understand one liking Nathan Drake but, the only interesting designed character?
I updated my post and then saw you said this! You're right. But we don't have a ton of mascot characters to work with and at least it has buzz along with Persona. But you ain't wrong... I'm excitable.

However in the case of Morgana from P5, that will happen regardless. At least for Atlus for sure.

To my knowledge, Yokai Watch isn't that big outside of Japan.

As for the answer to the OP's question, the Inklings (Splatoon), more so the Inkling Girl, & Tracer (Overwatch).

They are even shown on Nintendo corporate slides right next to Mario.

They've been pushing her hard but she's likeable.
The fact that the Inklings weren't added to Smash 4 as DLC was nothing short of baffling (unless technical issues held them back). Oh well, here's to Smash 5.

Lightning, definitely. She dominates and entire generation of Final Fantasy and is generally one of the most popular Final Fantasy characters. If there is a new Final Fantasy games that has her as a guest or playable character she is most definitely among the first to be shown.

Minecraft (Steve) is fucking huge. My kid is 8 but i am completely weirded out about how much youtube content there is alone on this game.

But it will take time to see if Steve really stands the test of time.

Hopefully Platoon will be a succes throughout the next gens of Nintendo consoles.

Mascot =/= icon

I still can't come up with a single designed character that's half as well written.

Both Bloodborne and Dark Souls have had very interesting, well designed characters. Now it might not be your cup of tea, but that doesn't mean it is objectively a dull generation.

No? We may have different standards.

Hey! You can't say "This is the only interesting designed character" and then pull the "hey man, everyone has opinions!"

Monokuma seems like a good recent mascot character.

Good answer. Maybe not a huuuuge mascot but easily a very recognisable face in the Anime community.

Also like someone mentioned, for as well known as they are seems like people don't know that they're called Inklings.
