What is your gaming white whale?

Ninja Gaiden Black. I've yet to complete it. (I completed the Xbox 360 version of NG2 though.)

Final Fantasy Tactics. Played and beaten every other FF title except this one. I've owned the PS1, PSP and Android versions over the years but end up quitting after 2-3 hours and never going back. Maybe I just don't get strategy RPGs or tactical combat or 3D isometric rotatable battlefields, but I'd love to be able to plow through it one day if only for the storyline that everyone raves about.

Does it count if the game was easy but so boring I stop playing it? I don't think I've ever stopped playing a game because it was hard.

Damn that game is hard....

Resident Evil 0. Right after the train. There's a part with a hallway that has three doors (one is double, the other is locked with a key card and the other leads to a garage, I think). I've never managed to clear that part and, hence, I haven't finished the game.

Also, this. FTL doesn't fuck around.

Huh, I had little problem beating it.

Personally, I would pick the original Prey. I'm stuck in a place, where I simply don't know where to go, and it's too scary. Started playing it like 8 years ago...

Huh, I had little problem beating Prey ;)

Was a great game though, and really hinted for a sequel. Sucks we're never going to get it.

For me, it's beating his little gem right here:

I have a pretty large fear of underwater levels in videogames. So I'm not sure what exactly made me pick this up when it came out - I think it was just how amazing the game looked, and it was, and still is I think, a unique take on the 3rd person platform/adventure genre.

I got maybe 2/3rd of the way through the game I think, two different times, into sections where you were waaaay underground in tunnels or something and you had to rely on finding little areas that released air bubbles. It was stressing me the fuck out, and I stopped playing. I picked it up several years later for the PS2, and did the exact same thing. I've always wanted to finish this game, but just can't bring myself to do it. Lately I've been thinking about giving it another go with an emulator.

So Gaf, what's that level you were never able to get through, that achievement you were never able to unlock, that game that made you it's bitch?
I've tried this game a few times and never got very far... the camera makes it hard to maneuver fast and I always get lost lmfao...

I have to drop all my current gaming habits and beliefs to play games like this. Bought it and the Congress version too, but it is one if the few games that makes you learn about the process. You can play all elections from 1788 to the present and even download elections from other countries. Only way to keep politics outside of video games is to play this...

Enter the Gungeon. I've sunk at least 60 hours into it but haven't beaten it once. I haven't even gotten to the final boss. I've beaten other similar titles (like Nuclear Throne, Android Assault Cactus, and Nex Machina) but just can't seem to beat EtG. I still love it, though. Definitely one of the all-time best roguelites on the market. Can't wait for Special Reserve to open pre-orders for the physical copy.

Sheesh, such a good game though. I was only able to beat it with two of the ship-types. I kickstarted it and am proud that I did.

Into the Breach also looks amazing but I haven't tried it yet.

Yes! I was really into this for a while but the last boss just didn't seem fair in the slightest, I could never get past it, and eventually you get tired of doing the whole fucking run again.
But that's the point, and that's what makes FTL such a good roguelite. You aren't supposed to be unstoppable at the end of a true roguelike. You're supposed to make it all the way to the Chaos Gate and get killed in 3 turns. You're supposed to trip down the stairs and get crushed by your own loot-sack. A true roguelike is comically unfair. You're supposed to barely eke out a victory. strange headache strange headache and Schrödinger's cat Schrödinger's cat both play DF and can vouch for what I'm talking about.

FTL demands that you master its mechanics in order to beat the boss. Reaching the boss is a challenge, yes, but it's certainly doable without a lot of investment. That's partly because the mechanics are simple and slick.

But the boss? The boss expects you to have finely-tuned your ship and taken every advantage possible along the way. And even this is no guarantee you will win. I remember having hefty shields plus shield-piercing status weapons was a huge advantage. If I'm remembering correctly (I haven't played it in years), a reliable way to kill the last boss was to kill the crew by any means. There are still automated weapons on the boss (which is where the hefty shields come in) but... yeah. I'll leave it at that because I don't want to spoil things. Figuring out the strategy is part of the fun.

FTL's boss is epic and was expertly designed. I stick by that opinion.

Oh shit yeah this just brought back memories of watching my friend try to beat the damn space pig at the end or whatever he was called, I remember it being absolutely ridiculous. I never beat that myself.

Yeah Wiz Pig was a cheating bastard ... It took me and my cousins a long weekend to eventually defeat him and you better believe we made sure we ate Carnitas that night in spite of him and his delicious brethren :)

Kudos to those who enjoy this type of gameplay, but it's just not for me. It didn't click with me to the point of wanting to master the mechanics. I love the music, the basic idea was interesting, and it was cheap so I figured what the hell. But the moment to moment gameplay didn't thrill me really, so after several dozen attempts I simply moved on to something else.

I have memories of playing one of the NES Castlevanias when I was about 5. Can't remember which one. I think we had to return it to Toys R Us because I couldn't figure out how to progress past the first area.

Good ol' Toys R Us.

So my white whale is basically beating any NES game ever as a 5 year old. Something I can never do without reversing time.

Back to the Future. TMNT. Top Gun. I don't think I even beat Duck Tales.

Abyss mode in Nioh. It just gets insanely hard around floor 120ish with extra bosses being added in, to the point that me and the friend I was co-oping with simultaneously decided that getting to floor 999 was just too much work.

This fucking game

220px-DKRboxart.jpg

Its such HARD!!! LIKE THE HELL!!

the only one game that i cant never beat in my life

For YEARS I didn't know that if I let go the acceleration button during turbos I would get a stronger one, that made ALL the difference. As a kid some cousin of mine could get to beat wizpig without knowing it after trying a thousand times LOL.

Resident Evil.....the whole series

Spoiler alert: I'm a big pussy, I only ever finished RE1 by watching a friend finish it while spending the night in High School.

20 years later I'm married and convinced my wife to play Resident Evil VR.

(I am shameful)

There is nothing I want to beat but haven't outside of Crash 2 N-Sane Trilogy version and Burnout Revenge, but that's because I am currently playing those two and I am certain I will finish them. They certainly are no "white whales".

The game I really tried the hardest to beat was this thing right here:

220px-Rocket_Knight_Adventures_North_American_Genesis_box_art.jpg

But I never managed to finish it. The game mixes up multiple gameplay mechanics, especially in the later stages of the game. So there is little "getting used to it", you are constantly trying to adept to new control mechanics. I was a kid back then and I don't know how often I tried to beat the game and failed miserably. Also, remember: no saving the game.

This game.. Ghosts 'n Goblins.. All the way back since I grew up.. Man, the coins I spent..

Xenogears. I loved that game, but it is super freaking hard. I am still stuck on the prison escape area today. I had no idea that I should have been leveling my gear up to that point.

I remember this, took me like 3-4 hours of trying. Only reason I thought it was possible was I had an early attempt that was super close.

Those credits are worth it though trust me. One of the only games where I've ever sat through the entire credit screen. Such a good feeling.

For me, it is completing Wolfenstein II on the hardest difficulty. The game... was poorly designed. Its levels (especially that idiotic court room level), enemies, and enemy placements, alongside the inability to skip cutscenes (and since if you die, you have to start from the very beginning), just doesn't make a fun challenge. The game is frustrating and lacks any and all fairness. You have to rely on glitches and luck to complete the game.

I had played every Wolfenstein on the hardest difficulty while having fun, especially The New Order. Sadly, this game just falls flat on its face and it is the one damn achievement that I cannot get for the 100% completion.

Nice thread. Watching it until I'm able to make my mind about my own white whales (probably some C=64 nightmare).

The only way I could get past that fucking court level was to sprint around meleeing enemies. Took me hours. Ironic given it's a shooter.

I felt from the beginning that there's something off about the shooting mechanics in that game.

Contra Shattered Soldier on PS2, awesome game, awesome soundtrack, last boss has multiple variations and might be literally impossible lol, maybe I'll check some YouTube vids and hop back into it

That was such a great remake/reimagining/whatever you wanna call it. I believe I beat it but it was very tough. I never did manage to beat the original Contra without cheats though.

I got to the last level of Rock Man X4 on the Saturn and just couldn't do it. I only tried it a few times but I just knew my skills would never be up to it. I was also trying to give up smoking at the time so I was in a bit of a bad mood, to put it mildly.

Vay for Sega CD. Last dungeon has this huge grid of identical rooms and apparently you have to search one by until you find the right one, all the while battling tons of random battles against super high level enemies.

Absolutely brutal. Dropped the game there and never came back.

At first i would have said Uncharted 2 on ps3, and only for the platinum, which i eventually got a few years ago, one hell of a challenge.

Now it still is the entire Legend of Zelda: Majoras mask game - all the way back to the N64, i had the guide book and everything, maybe i was too young but i never really picked it back up to play it and ive never made it past the first dungeon if i even made it that far... something about managing my time (or really understanding how the game worked) just turned me off. I know it is a great game, now that i'm older it will probably make sense as soon as i play it, and i will one day go back to finish it as its just sitting in my basement in my N64 hooked up to an old tv just asking to be played.

Final Fantasy X: Dodge 200 lightnight bolts? Check. Clear the chocobo race in zero fucking seconds? Rejected! My white whale since 2001.

Yeah i dont know that too, i gonna say a controversy but the Kart Gameplay is Horrible in Diddy kong racing, for me one of the Worst Games of N64 that i hope never play it again when i finish this.

Quake III Arena 1.32 - Uriel on Hardcore with 0 deaths. I can beat every other Arena Lord with 0 deaths but not Uriel, the fog of the level and the fact that you respawn with 50 armor seems to kill any long standing advantage that could be gained by map control.

Also, Diddy Kong Racing. Not even beating it, but just plain being any good at the game, I'm total trash at it.

Onimusha 1 - beaten all the rest, but never beat this end boss. got up to him, tried a few times, and put the game down for a bit. never went back. that will be rectified though in the remaster

Ogre Battle 64 - it stayed at my summer house where i chipped away at it, but never made it to the end.

Dragon Force - could never figure out what to do after I controlled all the kingdoms

Shining Force 3 Scenario 2/3 - self explanatory. :(

Ninja gaiden 2 playing on any difficulty above 'easy'

And people thought dark souls was hard...

A tough game to be sure but not an extremely difficult one I loved to play it on hard and it was amazing every time. I still rank it above NG3 even NG Black.

Digimon World 2 for PS1. I got incredibly far in the game, only to later realize I was only about a third of the way through. Now I don't have it any more and the game is $60. I loved the game and I want to get it again, but I just can't justify it at the moment. There's a point where the difficulty spikes so hard, and the game makes you actually do some thinking and adjusting of your Digimon otherwise you'll stagnate. You can't just over level one specific Digimon and win the game with that. I miss that game, I wish they'd throw it on PSN.

Dark souls 3 is mine. I would love to complete it and have tried multiple times but stop playing just after the first boss fight. It's the only game this gen that's give me a headache playing it and I own/played alot playstation vr games, dark souls remaster, bloodborne perfectly fine. The camera moves around the player terribly and disorientates me so I just can't get past the camera.

My OP's definition of "white whale" i would say the gray fox fight in mgs1 for ps. I didnt know how to handle his last phase. I eventually quit mgs because i was 15 and into going out. I rented Twin Snakes, beat it, then returned to the playstation version and big bossed it. So i guess i caught my Moby Dick (studios).
