I always felt that the current superhero movie popularity craze is due to the Gen-Xers who grew up reading comic books and introducing it to their kids.

But pretty soon we will have a generation of people who never read comic books in their lives. WIll superheroes still be appealing to them?

So what will replace superhero movies? Logically the answer seems like it should be video game movies, but for some reason Hollywood just can't for the life of them make a decent one. Will they ever get it right?

I don’t think it’s going anywhere.

Captain Marvel, an entirely average film IMO, just made a billion. Now that they can bring over Fantastic Four and X-Men into the MCU, we just getting started. Also DC is hitting stride with Shazam and Aquaman.

The craze isn’t a craze, it’s a long term institution. It’s a genre.

Yeah I agree it will never go away completely. Maybe I didnt phrase the question correctly, but these things tend to come in cycles. Maybe another craze will become more popular for the next 20 yrs before cycling back again to something else.

Nothing to be honest many giants out there that makes a living out of such movies. I’d appreciate good video games movies adaptations

EverydayBeast

thinks Halo Infinite is a new graphical benchmark
Video game movies taken more seriously, Twitter movie, movements etc. I'm sure Hollywood will put something together.

I love my Superhero movies and hope they don't go anywhere but I would love to see more sci-fi Fantasy/GOT/LOR type movies come to the big screen more often Maybe have their own universe.

I always like the idea of someone from our world being called in to some type of multidimensional overseeing force where the protogonist had to travel to different dimensions ala quantum leap style and in each dimension could be as different as say a superhero type dimension or a Lord of the rings type dimension or harry potter type etc. or whatever but if it was written well with a good epic storytelling director I think it could be done well

Eventually, things will wrap around to a comedy craze. Haven't had one since the frat pack period.

I get the feeling comedies swing upwards in popularity when things are normal, so I don't expect their time to come soon. It will continue to be high fantasy escapsim as long as the real world is loony.

now that these mega corps own these properties, we will see remakes and reboots endlessly, until the end of civilization. they changed IP laws in order to be able to hold onto so many IPs. what makes them so suited it the Pulp nature. comic books and pop fantasy were birthed on literal pulp; onto cheap paper. mass production was an essential part of the strategy. Disney has cornered the market, there is no reason for them to not capitalize on this pseudo monopoly. we will be seeing the same old movies and streaming series & "reboots" from them for the foreseeable future.

Movies going forward will be measured by their woke-ness. The plots will be a distance second place. Any movie hailed for it's story over it's message will be blasted as trolls trying to bring back the good-ole-days of white male dominated movies. It's going to be about tearing down the past and rebuilding the future in the new inclusive feminine gendered vision of the woke utopia police state.

That doesn't sound very fun.

Fun is such a masculine idea you monster!

There are already video game movies pretty much every year, usually multiple per year. There have always been comic book movies also, it is just that they haven't always been 'good'. This is like going back to the 80s and asking when they are going to stop making Superman movies.

I hope videogames.
I guess videogames are like my equivalent of comic books. I'd love to see a really well done DOOM or Quake movie, a new Mortal Kombat movie, a God of War movie etc. There's a lot of potential there but I know I won't see good faithful adaptations of these IP in my lifetime.

It's very possible it could be anime/manga adaptions.

It hasn't really taken off yet, they already make them and they all seem to flop, but it's important to remember that it took decades of comic book adaptions before those really started to be big success (Stallone's Judge Dredd movie is a perfect example of an ahead of it's time comic book adaption, the Alita Battle Angel movie is the 2010s equivalent)

They made Superman and Batman movies in the 40s and they will still be doing them in 2108.

They will also do Robin Hood movies until everything on Earth is dead.

I'm aware of the George Reeves Superman serials from the 1940s, but were there really Batman movies in the 1940s?

Video game movies woo! Bring on Guilty Gear, Hatoful Boyfriend, and other movies!

Guilty Gear? Who's going to play Bridget?

This is probably what it will be, but hopefully not.

Big.

Anime.

Tiddies.

In 3D!

I am getting more interested in the possibility of GoT movies. Has anything ever been officially stated regarding the series making the leap to the big screen?

I really want sci-fi to make a comeback but the latest big budget movies have been flops. If they condition audiences to be agreeable to seeing an all cg adult film then fighting movies could work. Anime is possible but tricky since they don't really go beyond one skin color in most of them outside of tans. I keep wondering how they could pull a marvel but I don't see where games , or anime could do such a thing. The only way I could see an anime working would be something similar to Harry Potter but I guess with Naruto from childhood to him becoming hokage.

My suggestions for movies would be:

  • all cg street fighter movies ( I could see a marvel type thing where you focus on different characters that eventually build up to fighting the big baddY)
  • Redo mortal kombat movies
  • live action version of Ghibli films ( feels painful to type that but princess Mononoke and kiki's delivery service could easily work)
  • I'd like to see an American version of InItial D
  • baki the grappler could take over the martial arts portion
  • Now that I think about it a live action of one piece would work as well. All of the crew can each have their own origin story plus the main villains along the way up until I guess the rescuing of Robin or go even further to Ace's death. The only possible issue would be Usopp. You could easily make a dozen movies out of this series from just the main storyline.

Doa and tekken live action was just weird. Tekken should just be redone. Doa should have just been almost softcore porn but not quite since it is a fighting series that does have them clothed, mostly . I would say final fantasy movies but condensing a 40 hour game in to 2 hours just seems wrong to me. I would go for series for final fantasy or a trilogy. A skyrim movie makes sense and I would think make tons of money especially if they give sneak peaks or another trailer of the next game at the end of the movie but that isn't a series a movies. I give up.

  1. They're special effects extravaganzas, which draw people to theaters.
  2. They have bad guys everyone can hate, so they don't annoy part of the theater-going international or politically-correct market by having terrorists or China be the villain.
  3. They're building off massive name recognition, even though it isn't mainly derived from comic books any more.
I don't think they'll be topped anytime soon. I'll just be happy if we get a pivot towards superhero-ish movies and shows from new fantasy or sci-fi settings. Warhammer, Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn series, or the Wheel of Time for example. Perhaps some Forgotten Realms. We'll see what happens with Amazon's Lord of the Rings series.

I don't know. Somehow, they don't appeal to me at all. I always find cartoons and comic books way superior.

I can see video game movies being a thing as time goes on, But they have to be "lifted straight from the game" as in if you are going to make a sonic the hedgehog movie, make him look like the Sonic the Hedgehog people know for a start.

I don't really think anything can, for now at least. Superhero movies is one way to effortlessly escape the often insurmountable stymies in the world.

Yeah they need people to translate the games to movies that are actually fans of the games to begin with. My hope for that Halo movie was that MS would pull a Marvel and fund the movie themselves so that they could stick as close to the source material as possible and reject any meddling from an outside studio. I think they've missed that opportunity now though as the franchise isn't as popular as it once was to justify making that kind of investment in a Halo movie.

Comic book movies are here to stay, unfortunately. I can’t see the shark being jumped at any point; they generally make money hand over fist, no matter the content. Unless “nerd culture” goes back to being taboo like it was for many years, these films will keep coming in droves.

I was burnt out on Marvel movies after Iron Man 3. I've liked DC's last output a lot more than what Marvel has been cranking out.

Membah what happened to Spider Man? I membah. Remake after remake ad infinitum. We will get remakes of all the Marvel films in 10-15 years.

This is why we must nuke the earth from orbit. It's the only way to be sure that this sorry future never happens.
