Yeah... no. One man managed to wipe out a small army and escape alive with an unconcious Ellie. The forces that were arrayed against him were too weak and inept to stand for humanity and their weakness cost them the opportunity. It was the fear and the cowardice of the fireflies that drove them to hire Joel to begin with even though they actually made it to the hospital before him.
Joel is a member of humanity as well and in that scenario proved to be the better. Humanity is not dead, it merely continues in another fashion. Joel got too comfortable with his fortune, settled down and before he knew it, his own weakness cost him his life but it was an end he would have expected many times over by that point.
Ellie and Tommy had to make a choice to either accept it as it is or take revenge. They opted for revenge but neither are the type of people that Joel was in his prime and decided to do a shitty half-job that cost them.
There are no good and bad guys here, just survivors.
