When did Spiderman get so strong?

SHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOCKER

I really loved watching the 90s Spider-Man cartoon, I should hunt down the DVD boxset.

I love it that in the next scene Norman ran off scared as he didn't want to mess about with Parker.

Spider-Man could go toe to toe against the Hulk and if need be finish him for good, but won't as that will mean killing Banner.

Ock was a terrible Spider-Man and he knew it as the dude was far too arrogant and refusing to believe that anyone could better him.

He was also far harsher than Parker and failed to understand the whole "With great power comes with Great responsibly."

It was when Norman had him beat and Parker chose stepped in to save someone even though it meant coming out of hiding that Ock realised that Parker was indeed the Superior Spider-Man.
The best part was afterwards when Peter faked being Octavius to scare Black Cat away.

Black Widow can lift as much as Colossus? Is she a super soldier serum recipient or something? Thought she was just a normal human.

A number of writers forget that Black Widow was the recipient of the Russian version of the Super Soldier Serum. Not as good, but it does the job.

The above old 70-80s newspaper comic, written by Stan Lee himself, gave some idea of Spiderman's strength level. He was... okay, just street level. He cannot flip tanks. Kingpin and Daredevil can give him trouble. This is the Spiderman I remembered as a kid. So the question... when did Spiderman get so strong until he could throw buildings and stop trains?

(repost from Civil War topic)

He's pressing 20 tons there. It was always ridiculous for Kingpin or Daredevil to give him any trouble whatsoever, so they always have to say he's just holding back all the time. The times he hasn't been, he beat the everloving shit out of Wolverine and Kingpin etc with zero problem.

Yep, pretty much this.

I remember being blown away when this happened. Seemed way more gorey in context than this screencap shows.

Spider-man is pretty strong. His webs used to be pretty lightweight when he wanted them to be. In early games they could grip onto air and support his weight.

I though the 90s animated series depicted his strength and agility well.

You can't go against The Lizard with regular ass strength.

Speaking of Russian super soldiers: remember Red Guardian and how he, in his first appearance, took on Cap in a 1v1? And had a draw?

Not really true. Pretty sure DD, Elektra, Moon Knight (with or without his Konshou boost), and Punisher (all the big New York operators I can think of) could handle him. Maybe with more difficulty, but Lizard ain't all that spectacular, astonishing, or amazing.

Lizard is pretty nasty. Punisher might be able to handle him with prep and a lot of weaponry but probably not to the other three.

Lizard is about as fast as spidey is, roughly as strong, with thick ass hide, a healing factor, a tail that can smash concrete and he is not shy about just eating people.

Nah in a fight with Spider-Man Devil, Elecktra, and Frank do not come out winning. Not if he's seriously going for them.

Really? I always figured that, since he wasn't as "intelligent," so to speak, that they could handle him with their skills. Then again I haven't read nearly as much Spidey as other Marvel stuff.

Depends on the type of Lizard. Classic Lee/Ditko Lizard was basically a dr jekyll and mr hyde situation and Lizard was just an evil version of conners (which was in ASM1). There's the savage, can't even speak anymore lizard, and there's a lizard that's around hulk type intelligence.

I thought it was pretty well established at this point that MCU characters are as strong or weak as the scene requires.

Lizard is intelligent. He's just not a genius like Connors is, and isn't a scientist. Lizard isn't a moron like say, killer croc.

He's usually displayed as average to above average in intelligence with an unreasonable hatred of humans.

Current lizard is Connors in the lizard body though. Way smarter, less bloodthirsty.

Ant Man? Why? If Thanos wipes out everything with the gauntlet isn't he gone too?

And I'm not so sure about Hulk either, I remember someone posting a picture of Thanos just bitch slapping Hulk like it was nothing.

Ant man could pull an atom when he dealt with darkseid. Shrink small enough to pass through his eyes and fuck him up from the inside. And thanos admits he doesnt like fighting the hulk

I'm pretty sure even if Ant-Man did manage to get into the crevices of his biology, he'd get bug-zapped. Of course, that's comics Thanos though.

Hulk, Thor, Iron Man, Vision, and Scarlet Witch are all above Spiderman's level. Maybe War Machine and Ant Man as well.

Scarlet witch? Ant man?

Pym particles would protect him somehow. Those things are broken

We don't know the extent of MCU Scarlet Witch's powers, but it's highly unlikely Peter is on her level. We saw her bring Vision to his knees in the Civil War trailer.

The Silver Surfer is physically weak. The Power Cosmic just keeps him in the fight.

Silver Surfer is not physically weak. Check out Silver Surfer in Planet Hulk who was under the influence of an obedience disk and without full access to his Power Cosmic, gave Hulk a run for his money.

Read the bottom of the panel to see how strong Silver Surfer is:

Lizard's intelligence varies, but he can be as intelligent as Connors.

Aight aight aight. My uneducated ass over here.

According to the old TSR Marvel Superheroes RPG from the early 80s, Spiderman has a strength rating of "Incredible", which means he can lift up to 10 tons.

Ya this matches the first comic panel in this thread, as a bus is about 20 tons.

I was wondering when he got upgraded to 60-100 ton class. That's maybe a 10x increase.

Another that bugs me is. Has the "teasing spider-man" been cranked up to eleven over the years? Most of the stuff I read as a kid was reprints from the 70's and 80's (pre-marriage Spidey) and I remember him... quiet. When I got back into comics with Civil War is when he would not shut up.

He was a smartass in the 60s, and in the early 80s Roger Stern stuff I'm reading now, he's even moreso, with plenty of pop culture references.

I know in the late 80s to 90s they were trying to be edgier, so maybe the humor was toned down then.

I remember collecting superhero collectable cards as a kid. The one Spidey card I had stated he could lift 10 tonnes. Kind of always stuck with me as his strength level.

I'm guessing he started working out. A peak human athlete at 77 KGs can lift 210 KGs x170 for spider strength and that would put him in the 30 Ton range. Without accounting for adrenalin or Fight vs Flight reactions which could concieveably make him output in the 60-100 range in specific instances

Edit: Spideys listed weight on Marvels website is 75KGs so I rounded up and 170 was the best guess at spider strength I could find. Though there is probably a more accurate number
