When does Trailer Park Boys get good?

People always compare this show to It's Always Sunny's greatness, but I am not seeing it so far. The first episode was really, really rough and not really funny at all, whereas IAS starts off hilarious from the get-go.
 
I'd say I didn't really groove to it until around the end of first season / early season 2.

It takes a bit of time for them to figure out what works and what characters to focus beyond the two mains.
 
Episode 1, although the show becomes what it was when bubbles became a main. I think you should jump forward and if you like a random episode go back.
 
It takes 3 or 4 episodes to get the relationships. If you're not into by then, drop it.

The show gets better as time goes on in an Arrested Development type of way with running gags/foreshadowing. One of the best comedies out there.
 
Once Ellen Page joins the cast is where it gets excellent, but the first season is pretty great overall. It's a slow start to establish the characters, but picks up fairly quickly after the first few episodes.
 
For me, the first season was ok, but the show got REALLY good by the second season when Bubbles became a main character.

I know that's a long time so if you're not feeling the shot at all by 1 or 2 more episodes, I'd just drop it. Lots of other shows to check out.

Yeah if you don't like it by the end of season 2, the show just isn't for you. If it does grow on you, be warned that it falls off really, really hard and gets bad around season 7.

Lahey always stays great though, one of the best characters in any comedy.
 
You've got to get to know all of the characters and their relationships with one another. I think season 5 is my personal favorite because it's peak boys vs Bobandy+Lahey. I think if you can appreciate the absurd scheming and plotting of the gang in Always Sunny, you could enjoy the trailer park boys. Give it a season.
 
i dont think it's that great of a show for binge watching but it was amusing when it was something that was just on in reruns all the time
 
To the contrary TPB is one of my favorite all time shows, and from what very little I've seen of IASIP it didn't really hook me. Granted, I haven't given it a proper chance, and I didn't realise there were comparisons to TPB, so maybe I should...

But yeah as other have said, the shows still finding its way feet through the first 2 seasons or so. Season 3-5 are pure gold. 6 is much shorter and a little inconsistent, but worth it for the hi-def piss jugs ep alone. 7 loses a couple of key characters and starts to go a little wacky. Still had some moments though

Also, I'd suggest at least giving the christmas special a watch. Forkin hilarious and genuinely quite moving as well

The show is funny from the first episode. First season just takes a bit introducing the characters (as there are many). By the end of the first season you should be in binging mode.
 
If you don't like the humor after the first few episodes just stop, they get better at it but it doesn't change very much

When i started watching it (which i have just realized was 16 years ago now, wow), it wasn't so much waiting for a good episode to show up but more so acclimatizing myself to the show, its style, learning the relationships and realizing that its far smarter than it initially lets on. I really didn't get it at first, but it did eventually click with me and now i really appreciate and enjoy all of it. There really are some truly incredible episodes and story arcs, and the love that the protagonists and antagonists share for one another despite always been at ends is great. Its also quite progressive and inclusive.

I quite prefer it over IAS.
 
It's good from the very beginning but you have to be able to appreciate stupid humor. It presents itself as low brow but there is some very smart stuff in there. I suppose if you aren't smitten with it right away then it's not for you.
 
I love both TPB and Sunny, but in no way are they comparable.

The show really hits its stride in season 2. Season 1 has some good moments, but seasons 2-6 is where it's at.
 
It's a comedy, if the humor doesn't resonate with you don't waste your time. This isn't a series where you need anything to develop in later seasons to appreciate.

Might be best just to give it a go, know that it doesn't make a great first impression on everyone but its deceptively clever, occasionally subversive and has a lot of heart.
 
Took to season 2/3 for me to start loving it. Once I fell in love with the show I went back and rewatched season 1 and it's really good. It's just odd in the beginning.

One of my favorite moments.

The drunker Lahey gets, the funnier the show gets. It peaks at season 8, with the last few seasons pretty bad. I haven't seen the new season yet, but heard it's pretty good.

Highly recommended show.
 
It's only really similar to Sunny in the concept of it being about a bunch of trashy people with very few redeeming qualities, but TPB is not nearly as dark and has a certain amount more affection for its cast. That and there's sort of a "what's the new scheme" sort of thing but that's typically a season long story rather than episode.

So I wouldn't go into it based on purely liking Sunny, they aren't similar beyond a plot level, and neither show is exactly worth watching for the plot.
 
I kinda grew out of it, I liked it early on but it's definitely not for everyone. I actually think some of the character ham it up a bit too much as it goes on, particularly bubbles
 
I thought the first episode was hilarious and I'm not sure it ever gets any better.

Trailer Park Boys makes me think Aussies and Canadians are kindrid spirits. The characters in this show aren't far removed from typical aussie bogans with the major difference being that we call trailer parks, caravan parks instead.
 
Definitely not for everyone but I enjoyed it.

Seasons 4-5 are the peak to me
Seasons 1-3 have excellent eps in them
Seasons 6-7 cool off but has its moments

Watched the new S8 to S9 and lost my enthusiasm to even try S10. I did give Season 11 a go and still only midway through. Not the same but it didn't feel as forced as the 8-10 did. Losing J Roc is a huge subtraction.
 
Go see the episode with Conky, if that doesn't do it for you I guess you should move on from this show.

I'd say Season two is when it starts kicking off. It's such an amazing show once you think about the tiny details in their speech and how they think. It takes time to get into the mindset but god damn, TPB is one of the funniest shows I've ever watched. I think it's even funnier than Always Sunny. The way the trailer park itself is a character and how the character is so unique.

They didn't lose J Roc, he's been in the series forever. They lost Trevor (Corey and Trevor) who in my opinion was part of the main cast -- you can't replace him. S8 to 11 just suck. It's so embarrassing and seeing them interact with celebrities constantly is stupid. The Rush cameo was funny, it is good once in a while.

They lost the actors who play J-Roc and Lucy. Season 8 is weak, but it was the new production team and it felt like they were finding their footing, i quite like everything they've done since but its certainly not the same quality as the series heights.
