Where's the hype for Xenoblade Chronicles X?

Well, Type-0 has the element of taking YEARS to come out over here and possibly just being a better fit for handhelds only to be completely kept away despite fairly marginal improvements. Years of anticipation can really warp expectations.

Certainly true. See FFXIII, I assume a lot of people think the world would be as big as FFXII or something so the hype really increased unrealistically since its announcement (2006) until its JP release (2009). FFXV (Versus XIII) is already a victim of it since 2006 and the disappointing reception of FFXIII lead to people hoping Versus XIII will relieve it. Versus XIII (FFXV) has almost 10 years of incredibly unrealistic hype already.

(may be interesting to see how Trails in the Sky SC is received in the long run on that note, but that had a framework in the form of FC to temper expectations)

What is the general consensus of TitS SC though? All I know it's a much more bigger TitS FC and that's about it. Not much impressions, they only say it starts out slow.

Link to the review?

Geez that took me awhile to find. Whose idea was it to title the OT as XenobladeX (as opposed to Xenoblade X) anyway? That made it difficult to find. Anyway here's the review: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=164902092&postcount=2655

Not a bad review by any means (and honestly what I was expecting before launch) but it still dropped my hype a few pegs, given his review of the original was what got me interested in it in the first place.

I enjoyed Xenoblade but the thought of sinking so much time into a video game again is just a total turn off for me.

It's supposed to be really, really damn good. But I just wonder if waiting 4+ years may have left some people with unrealistic expectations. But like said it had a framework in the form of FC, so people should know what to expect gameplay wise and with characterization/story in a sense, and in that regard it's more akin to waiting on a new Song of Ice and Fire book than, uhh, most of the non-XIV FFs lately, haha.

Hype is right here. Special Edition and Collector's Strategy Guide are both reserved. Just patiently waiting for the release date.

Like an MMO?

Yeah, pretty much. Well some of them. Like FF14 where in every cutscene they have to cut to your character just nodding at something because you really have no character at all. That is fine (arguably) for an mmo but not what I would want from a Xeno game.

I was pretty excited at first but after impressions of a pretty thin story and emphasis on mmo/DAI style quests I lost a lot of interest. I like Xenoblade because of the narrative and not the side quests.

Regardless I'll still give it a look. The soundtrack is pretty kick ass at least.

because that's the title for JP release, i mean how it is spelled there

I'm still excited for the English release
so I can get that LE USB :U
, but I'm also still hoping for some sort of expansion to the game. Or any sort of major update, even if only addresses the UI/gameplay problems.

There's still plenty of hype if you know where to look. Divisive opinion does not necessarily indicate the lack of excitement or, conversely, skepticism for a game. Polarizing games are good for the industry.

Besides, I thought the gaming community had already determined that hype is overrated. Bandwagon fans are probably the last thing I need to get excited about a game.

I honestly feel like making a whole separate thing in terms of gameplay regarding the mechs hurt them in the long run.

What's the point of making every character unique and have different playstyles if you can just slap on a mech and make thing all samey?

They should have just given or locked standard classes of mechs with the exactly the same class differentiation (along with one class of equippable items etc) to make each feel more unique. The whole swapping weapons for different arts feels off, besides the super weapons they don't really add "character" or something similar that I'm having a hard feeling describing right now. All I do know is that if I have a giant sword strapped to my shoulder I want to be using that 24/7 and have a whole mech arts suited for that not just one animation.

Also "catch" is real stupid when you can just have aerial topple in the form of stun.

Human combat just seems superior.

But I'm still going to get it, any complaints is just nitpicking for me at this point.

I have to say my distinct lack of a Wii U has somewhat tempered any hype. It does look pretty though and the Mechs look amazing. If it comes to the NX (and I get an NX) I'll grab it.

My hype is dead. It started slow after thinking XB was "just good", it peaked (and was very high) when I read interviews and whatnot implying that the game is going to be very story-centric with lots of scifi stuff going on - so obviously I expected something like Gears or Saga - and it died when we started getting import opinions and gameplay videos and when I heard the OST. There are so many games to play right now that I really can't find any excitement for XBX.

I'll play it when I can get a Wii U for 100 euros.

Dark Souls and Bloodborne would like to have a word with you.

How are these comparable lol

Weak story + Sawano OST.

This combo devastated all my hype, especially because the music was brilliant in the first game.

Thank god the 1st one so damn good; I never get tired of replaying it :3

My hype slowly withered as I waited for the game and died when I heard they didn't use the same VAs as XC. On average, American voice overs of Japanese RPGs are horrible.

I think the influx of open world (ish) titles in recent year might also be a factor that tempered the excitement for Xenoblade X. When the original Xenoblade was released and in the last gen, there weren't that many open world games. Now it's getting more common. Series that weren't open world before has started taking influence of it. (FF, Tales, Metal Gear, Dragon Age, Witcher)

I'll be getting it... but only because I don't want it to sell out like Xenoblade Chronicles did and not be able to get a copy.

My hype is not in overdrive simply because it took me half a year to finish The Witcher 3 and probably not looking for another long game right about now.

I'd certainly like to see your sources.

"Reviewed well in the major magazines." What major magazines that do reviews?

"Good word of mouth on Japanese message boards and enthusiast sites." What sites are you even talking about?

"Most import reviews were also good." How many import reviews were there even?

You say that "most Japanese press and gamers were positive," as if you know what you're talking about, but the rest of your post makes me think you're making this all up.

Hello Zefah,

I am sorry if something I wrote has upset you. I don't meant to come off as either a liar or an expert. But I have lived in Japan for more than a decade and follow the industry here as well as I can. Most of what I wrote was based off impressions I got at the time of launch while living here. I am fully prepared to be proven wrong but I just am not seeing the negativity in Japan that so many of the posters here are claiming.

A few of the scores from publications I follow are:

34/40 (9.9/8/8) Famitsu score (I know a lot of people don't take much account of Famitsu scores but also the respondents to the Famistsu poll (1200 gamers not reviewers) gave it a 74.4 out of 100. (集計対象1200人)によると平均プレイ時間は「168時間」、100点満点で「平均74.4点」

Dengeki called it a masterpiece http://dengekionline.com/elem/000/001/040/1040729/

Nintendo Dream Magazine (print) also gave it a positive review. [they don't have full articles on their site] http://www.nindori.com

For word of mouth, message boards and enthusiast sites. Here I might have overstepped my opinion. I cannot possibly claim to know the pulse of the entire Japanese internet, and I'm sorry if it came across that way. But in my experience and the sites I hang out on, places like Gamerlife, gaming ameblo, mixi, etc. There was a general positive atmosphere. This I cannot quantify and probably should not have mentioned.

As for import reviews, you are correct in thinking there haven't been very many of them, but here are a few:

http://www.nintendoworldreport.com/review/40799/xenoblade-chronicles-x-review 9/10
DualShockers 9.5/10
http://n4g.com/news/1729964/gamekult-import-review-xenoblade-chronicles-x 8/10

I will freely admit that I am not an expert but I also am not trying to deceive people. If I am guilty of anything it is being ignorant to the "generally negative Japanese impressions" that keeps being said in this thread. The impressions I received here in Japan were largely positive. I don't remember reading a single negative magazine review (feel free to link me to one). And other than the Kotaku Import impressions, the majority of import reviews I read were positive (again please correct me if I am wrong).

I am sorry if anyone feels misled by my posts. But I really feel there is a lot of negativity around how this game was received in Japan that clashes with my experience here.

I'll go back to lurking now.

Xenoblade X was one of the few Wii U games that looked compelling. But the more I learn about it, the more I feel like it's not what I'm looking for, and that I have little interest in its selling points. I know that running around in large and exotic environments is something a lot of people are looking forward to, but it leaves me more than a bit cold; just a bit empty-feeling. I suspect that "Doesn't have an English title yet" #FE is going to be the one RPG worth playing on the Wii U.

Great post. You have absolutely no need to apologize to anyone.

Honestly I just don't have the time to play an MMO without the online part. Endless filler quests were cool when I was a bored 13-year old.

The impressions about the sparseness of story are concerning. I love the Xeno series in general, so will purchase purely depending on how I feel after reviews and impressions are flowing.

If I have to buy an external hard drive to enjoy this game that will probably put it off unless I can pick one up for cheap during the holiday sales.

I'm still hyped, but it has taken so long already and it feel like I already said hundreds of times what I had to say about this game, including the comments on the stupidity of "the game was not well received in Japan" and the one or two people here who insist on proving that their impressions are more important than everybody else's

At this moment I've seen so many videos and read so many comments that I just want the game out. One month to go.

The fact that Nintendo's PR is terrible this year and the marketing for this game is almost nonexistent just comes on top.

Oh man I feel like a jerk. I meant the "legendary" review that he posted about Xenoblade Chronicles oh so long ago. :\

silent protagonist in 2015. gross.

Bahh. I hope that u wont be hyped for persona and smt final at all here.

Honestly I just don't have the time to play an MMO without the online part. Endless filler quests were cool when I was a bored 13-year old.

I dont know how many can still make this mistake when nintendo already had huge trailer explaining how u can actually play quest together with friend online and there are semi online mode where u and 20+ people tries to complete mission on different world without playing together.

And the quest especially kizuna is much much more than simple endless filler quest. It is important and essential for world and character building here.

im still quite excited for persona 5, but its lame that the protagonist isnt voiced. u can have dialogue options and voice each of them. games like mass effect and dragon age do it well.

it just seems like another thing japanese devs are falling behind in compared to western devs.

How can u be still excited with persona if silent protagonist grosses u lol.^~^

I'm still hyped, will probably drop everything I'm playing once it comes out. The strength of Xenoblade Chronicles alone makes me want to get it, even if it doesn't live up to its predecessor it should at the very least still be good.

No point in getting a wii u now when games are so frequently ported and XBX might end up on NX.

If it doesn't then maybe someday i'll get a wii u and the game in the clearance aisle.

Which trailer was that?

I was extremely excited till I read some import impressions, saw the trailers and played it myself at recent game expos. I'm concerned they went overboard to make it like an MMO. And of course, the characters are utterly hideous. I mean, Xenoblade wasn't exactly a looker itself and the character models were a jokey mess, but they still had... well character. The character models in this are just utterly atrocious. Heck they look so bad they're distracting. Those faces... ugh... For a story-driven JRPG the way the characters look DO matter to me in this day and age. So I see that seriously hindering my enjoyment.

I will still buy the game and hope that the overall package turns out to be solid, but overall hype is definitely way down. Pinning all my JRPG hopes on Persona 5 right now, which looks more and more amazing every time new footage comes out.

This is the only game I intend to buy for the rest of this year though I don't know how hyped I am. I didn't get anywhere near finishing the first one but... Mechs.

Absence makes the heart grow fonder...or forgetful. I can still remember when this was supposed to come out in 2014.

This is still the biggest game of the holiday season for me, since I'm not into shooters.

I'll most likely pick it up, but it's quite far removed from what I'd have guessed a Xenoblade sequel would have been. That said, X1 ended its story quite nicely and with enough finality that I wouldn't so much be able to guess where a story would go from there.

I assume we know exactly how much it does or doesn't call back/connect to X1 by now, right?

I really haven't been following this game nor have I really seen any big news updates regarding it, originally the game looked impressive but I wouldn't even know what the game is like at this point

Nintendo doesn't port their games like that terribly often. I wouldn't expect them to do much on that front. Maybe BC, though.

Also, I see you're not terribly familiar with how the prices of Nintendo games work. Unless the game completely bombs, the price is going to go up, not down.
