Why are there (virtually) no JRPGs for next-gen consoles yet?

The xbox 360 has been out for 18 months and there is only one (maybe 2) JRPGs available for it . . . Blue Dragon . . . but MSFT had to totally money-hat in order to get that. (And Blue Dragon isn't even available in the USA yet.)
Some may say Final Fantasy XI . . . but does that really count since it is a MMORPG?
But OK, Japan hates MSFT . . . what about the other consoles.

The PS3 has . . . nothing? WTF? Isn't playstation the traditional home of the JRPG?

And the Wii has . . . nothing? (Unless you want to consider Zelda a JRPG.) Or is Super Paper Mario consider a JRPG?

It just seems weird that we are 7 months into this generation (18 months of 360) and there are no JRPGs.

Why is this the case? I guess some of it has to do with the fact that consoles are becoming almost irrelevant in Japan. The DS rules all. So there are lots of JRPGs on the DS I guess.

Edit: Fixed my FFIX mistake.

IMO Xbox 360 is getting most of them. I am really surprised by the lack of RPG's on PS3 but I guess PSP didn't have much going on either

Because Japanese RPG developers can't all afford to have their games looking like FFXIII?

That's also one of the reasons the 360 is getting so many of them.

Why make a JRPG for a next-gen console when I can make one for the ps2 and sell a lot more copies? We're talking a genre that is not typically a graphics powerhouse.

this is an odd question unless this is the first console generation you've paid attention to.

Because they are all being made for the new gen console.

Anyway, I remember PS2 having this same problem. Tons of complaints about lack of Japan RPGS. But they always seem to fall on the latter half of a console cycle. Happened with PS1. Happened with PS2.

You won't have enough money to buy all the Xbox 360 JRPGs that'll be out by the end of this year. You'll have to get a second job, and then you won't have enough time in the day to play them all! Which means you'll be spending much less time on GAF making useless threads like this. :)

Yeah, that occured to me while writing . . . and I guess that is the best answer. But some of the launch games are non trivial too. And when you consider that the PS3's launch was delayed in Japan for several months plus it is now 7 months after launch, you'd think there would be something by now.

Did MSFT's money-hatting of Mistwalker actually slow JRPG development on other platforms by stealing talent and getting it working on the 360? I'm thinking the lack of JPRGs has been really hurting the PS3 in Japan.

PS3 should be getting some in the next year, hopefully. it is one of the reasons why i bought a PS3, for FF13 and other JRPGs.

I can wait, there are many ps2 RPGs i have not played yet.

ahhaaa the only Japanese developer that can make an engine at the level of White engine is Tri Ace and they are working one exclusive 360 RPG

Really? How many? Might that actually boost the popularity of the xbox 360 in Japan?

I would think that a price cut plus a slew of JRPGs would really help them in Japan . . . they had a fair number of people that bought a 360 just to play Blue Dragon.

Nope.

Yes. There is a reason for that. As said above, decent budget rpgs take 1-3 years to make and that's AFTER the teams get comfortable on the hardware.

X360 rpgs will start appearing at the end of this year, and PS3 ones a year later. Just give it some time.

PS2 was the last pillar to JRPGS.

.- handhelds can never substitute a console so ds and psp are out of the question
.- they hate 360 with passion.
.- they hate PS3 a little less but still.
.- Wii is for the casuals and 1st party.

with the soon to be extinct PS2 in japan, JRPGs will have to be on stand by for the next months until either japanese embrace hi-def gaming or Wii proves it is a viable platform for 3rd parties.

JRPG's don't happen quickly it took a year for them to come on DS and PSP (and these were mostly ports for christ sake).

It took a year for PS2 RPG's to happen same with PS1.

No one expects JRPG's until a year after a console's launched the earliest.

How can Wii prove it's a viable platform for 3rd parties if they're all sitting around with their dicks in their hands waiting for the shitty 3rd party shovelware that's currently being released on Wii to sell better than Nintendo's first party games?

If they want to succeed on the Wii, they'll have to match and surpass Nintendo's offerings.

What the hell are you talking about? You're blathering is painful to read. Have you seen JRPG sales on the DS? Have the Japanese developers said "we hate the PS3 just a little less than the 360"?

A ton have and continue to come to the DS & PSP.

Also, this year is absolutely insane so far with JRPG's on the PS2.

Rogue Galaxy
Shining Force EXA
Odin Sphere
Dot.Hack G.U. Vol 2 Reminisce
Atelier Iris 3: Grand Phantasm with Bonus!
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 Special Edition

Well so far the 360 got Oblivion, Enchanted Arms and Blue Dragon.

The PS3 got Oblivion and Enchanted Arms too.

Now for the upcoming ones.

360 : Lost Odyssey, Trusty Bell, Fable 2. What are the other ones ?

PS3 : FFXIII, FF vs XIII, Folklore, WKS, and maybe Trusty Bell (still rumored to be ported or nope ?)

So I guess I missed a few ones, but the 360 isn't getting "most of them" at all AFAIK.

i personally wouldnt group the sprectral force games with the rest, not very 'next-gen'.

Yeah, RPG's take a while to make, which is why it amazed me that 360 got a game like oblivion so early in it's lifespan.

here is a better questions; When will JRPG's start ripping off BioWare games? KOTOR was released ages ago and so far not a single JRPG has implemented the good/evil conversation system :\

are bioware games released in Japan?

What?

'cause 360 is american, while jRPG are, guess what, japanese and japaneses don't like american consoles. also, Wii and PS3 are still young and RPGs typically take a lot of time to develop.

I just watched the extra disc that came with Oblivion. They said they were building it for the 360 from the start even though the 360 was still just a circle at that point in time.

o.k we can have an argument about DS being the recipient to most of the JRPGS that would otherwise be destined to be on PS2.

However until I see announcements about JRPGS coming to PS3, then yes, japanese are somehow saying " we hate PS3 a little less than 360 ". Announcements for PS3 games are scarce, all together not only about JRPGS.

How many of the games you listed for PS2 have already been released and disappeared from the MC software lists? PS2 has only one more holiday season in Japan and that's all. Half a year.

Suikoden VI is coming, just no platform announced yet. I wouldn't be surprised if it to showed up @ TGS this year. There's also The Last Remnant for PS3/360.

Didnt you get the memo? Suikoden VI on the Wii.

360 in US:

Blue Dragon
Lost Odyssey
Cry On
Infinite Undiscovery
Eternal Sonata
Magna Carta 2 (Was this canned?)
Kingdom Under Fire (Action RPG)
Last Remnant (Also for PS3)

I feel like I am missing some though.

I want to see more of White Knight Story. I remember Bebpo saying he's sure it'll be out december 2007 in japan because that's how jrpgs work or something like that. Got my hopes up. :'(

Though I really doubt it, I hope Suiko VI goes 360. I'm guessing Wii looks most likely at this point, although the game has always been on Sony consoles.

Japanese developers aren't used to multi-threading I would think. :p
