Why do women always say they're fat?

Fishing for compliments, low self esteem. They know they're not fat but ask for validation, it's become a slight turn off for me I don't acknowledge that stuff anymore.

I actually like slightly chubby women though (or even fat if I found them to be cute/pretty, I'm not really grossed out by fat).

Can we have an eating addiction thread for srsly though?

I ate a whole tub of ice cream as well as a whole tub of pringles crisp yesterday. Then some lucozade to top it all off.

is considered a "plus size model" why wouldn't average women feel fat?

well, ideally the average woman would know better.

Pretty sure being bald is the equivalent, as much as people like to say "Bald guys are sexy!"

I'd say you're right about baldness being the equivalent. Constant barrage of commercials telling guys that they need good hair to get the girl and bull shit methods to reclaim you're lost hair. Just look at the constant axe and rogaine commercials. How often do you see bald models? Not very. Women do buy into wanting a guy with hair over a bald one. Closer they get to 30 the less they seem to care though as long as you shave your head.

I have a female friend who's about 135 and 5'4-5'5(we're about the same height) and she's the most beautiful woman I know. She's got the biggest boobs and she's always showin 'em off lol. Irks me when she posts a photo and types the caution "I used to be so pretty" or "gah I'm so fat." Shut the fuck up you're gorgeous!

I think it's all about confidence. There are bigger women out there who own their body and are unashamed of it just as there are skinny women who feel the need to starve themselves.

I can empathise with (what is apparently, all) women who do this. I'd personally, call myself 'fat', even though people like my friend Manny respond with statements like "YO, C-DAWG, YOU AINT GOT SHIT ON YOU BRO"

and I'm like

"FUCK YOU, MANNY, YOU DON'T NEED TO BE WIDE TO BE FAT, IT'S ALL ABOUT BODY FAT PERCENTAGE N' SHIT"

and Manny's like

"YO' MOMA DIDN'T SEE IT THAT WAY LAST NIGHT, BRO"

and then I'm like

"FUCK YOU, MANNY".

But the way I see it, it's true. Body fat percentage matters way more than how narrow you are, it's a far more accurate basis for how fat, and therefore unhealthy you feel with your body, which naturally affects confidence.

nah .. naahhhhh

The Internet is great because people can ask questions like this anonymously and get real responses. It would be great if GAF (and other forums like Reddit) had a healthier female popular to further engage men on questions/issues such as these.

That reminds me, I was a mod in some games forum and we had to make an exclusive forum for women after we tried to do a thread somewhat about you're describing. The questions they asked were a bit...well...not really healthy. The female users demanded us to create an exclusive section to talk between them exclusively.

The forum doesn't exist anymore, and I can't recall how they made sure a user was female, actually. :|

Societal expectations and a culture of beauty obsession.
Sums the question up perfectly. The media makes profit off the ladies insecurities of their body. $$$, it will always be like that until a change happens.

YUCK!

She looks healthy though.

very first image on google for plus size models

The whole abdomen area just seems out of place. If that was toned I would say she is physically attractive but the fat rolls and modeling is a no, no. Even though the ideal body type for modeling is an unrealistic view. I just can't agree with that imagine.

This is so funny, lol.

Oh honey, I have experienced it. All through high school. Look me up in the acne threads here--spent 6 fucking months on the drug Accutane.

Every single day in high school I went to class with fresh acne on the bottom left corner of my mouth and whole face. I FELT ridiculed, but realized I just didn't have any confidence. Society didn't tell me anything. Because I wanted the acne gone.

I didn't go up to people saying "My skin sucks, do I look presentable?" I accepted the piece of shit looking human I was and fixed it by going to a dermatologist.
Could you be any more condescending or are you looking to break a record

this

and frankly it's the same for men.

It all comes down to confidence and self-esteem. For me, I just don't give a flying fuck what other people think about me. So long as I'm comfortable in my own skin, I'm good to go.

And by the way, cuuuuuuuuurves all day every day.

Adult women in the United States
63.7% overweight, 35.8% obese, 8.1% extremely obese

Average men and women over here are carting around an extra load or two. That said, the solution isn't self-loathing. Well, it can be if it gets you motivated -- whatever works -- but I find that those sentiments don't subside after the weight comes off if you've harbored them the entire time. The goalposts will continue to move and you'll continue reaching for a fantasy ideal.

Why do thin girls ask you if they're fat? Well, setting aside the fishing for compliments angle, everyone in the United States probably has body dysmorphia at this point, regardless of how they actually look. The media is entirely comprised of photoshopped imagery, people on performance enhancing drugs, and 99.999th percentile genetics; often all at the same time.

I don't agree with fat acceptance sentiments, but most of us are in need of healthier outlooks, body and mind.

My own solution is to watch surgeries of overweight/obesity-related health problems and complications.

After watching something like this:
NSFW

That bag of chips, and junk food, don't look all that appetizing.

Ultimate hedonism victory: work out a lot AND eat terribly whenever you want. Keep those two scales balanced and the exercise will override the bad eating decisions and you'll remain looking good and having good vital stats at the doctor's office. Working out makes you feel good, eating awesomely tasty things makes you feel good, and the former shields you from guilt over the latter.

I like this solution too, but I can really pig out though.

I guess we'll just say that I'm bulking up ;)

I often feel like I am fat, because I used to be very underweight. Now I am at a 'normal' or 'healthy' range, and I feel grossly overweight. It's stupid. I know it. I want to lose around 15 lbs, which would put me at the bottom of the healthy range, but I also secretly want to be back down to 115.

that just seems like a lot of work, cause you'd have to work out a TON to make up for eating a bunch of sugary shit

First reply nails it.

I never call myself fat because I'm pretty thin, but I'm pretty insecure about some parts of my body. It's especially embarrassing being so thin but having a belly, and most of the girls around you have flat stomachs :'/...

I know the feeling. Growing up I was extremely thin, but even though I was grossly underweight people always complemented me on my thinness. Now that I'm at a normal bmi I get parents criticizing that I've "put on a few", parents who had eating disorders themselves when they were young and who still haven't realized that maybe their perception of beauty is a bit fucked up. Thankfully I'm pretty happy with my body (certainly happier than I was before) but insecurity still pops up from time to time.

My dude friends always say they're fat too.

And they are kind of fat in their 30 and 40s

Difference is no one gives a shit.

...That's not meant to be snark. And unless you're extremely overweight, I doubt you'll have nearly as much problems as a guy. We all remember the studies about overweight women, yeah?

Well what I was saying is that my female friends rarely say they're fat, they're pretty skinny, sometimes they do say they've gained a little weight, but just as much as my male friends do because my male friends are getting to a point where they're a bit obese in their mid 30s, and it's getting difficult for them to lose weight with kids and work and alcohol, while their wife/girlfriends are able to maintain their weight better.

It's a common thing in my circle of friends.

I assume you know these stats are fucked, yeah? There are -7.6% American women who are normal weight or underweight?

I'm guessing the extremely obese percentage is a portion of the obese percentage, which is a portion of the overweight percentage.

I think the stats mean 63.7% of all adult women are overweight. The following percentages is what fat evolution that 63.7% falls into.

It's got nothing to do with the media portrayal of women. Women are acutely aware that men like girls of all shapes and sizes. It's just a way of fishing for compliments.

I prefer healthy 'curvy' (not obese) girls. It's more feminine IMO. Wafer thin models with exposed bones induce a need to vomit in my mouth. I have no idea how guys bone women that thin without hurting them.

You won't have nearly as many problems, sure, but it's obvious that weight is a serious concern for men too. The guys I know around my age who are overweight are all on some kind of diet and while their friends might not hold their weight against them (at least not consciously) others do.

Media portrayal of women is a big one. When every "role model" is photoshopped and airbrushed like a barbie doll then it becomes hard to find a relatable anchor in reality and one begins to feel isolated. Hollywood stars with botox and weight removal surgeries (both men and women) exacerbate this to an unhealthy level. There's nothing inherently wrong with those celebs who manage to lose the weight the good old fashioned way, but they also have the money and thus the free time to make that process much easier than for your average person. See also, most any actor/actress out of work/on vacation for more than a year or two. In short, they move the ideal goalpost and/or make an ideal image seem easier to achieve/maintain than it actually is, leading to constant frustration for those who look to them as such.

There's the pervasiveness of the horribly flawed BMI metric and misinterpretations of and not knowing the difference between "overweight" and "obese." "Overweight" is meant to mean simply a minorly less than optimal bodyfat ratio. There are no significant adverse effects at this stage. You're more lethargic maybe, but otherwise you're still fairly healthy (not that one should be completely content to remain overweight, though). It's only when you get into "obese" range that you run into major health risks like cardiovascular disease and hormonal issues. The two terms tend to get mixed with each other a lot, making "overweight" seem like a much dirtier word than it actually is and encouraging much more extreme action than is needed.

On the flipside, there's also a misuse of a lot of dieting plans out there. There are plans for maintaining weight as well as plans for losing weight, but often the two get mixed together. Overuse of weight loss diets is especially pervasive. These diets are meant to take an above normal person back down to normal through a reduction of certain excess but still necessary dietary portions. They don't work and are actually unhealthy when you reach a normal weight, and too many more people just keep going for the sake of making some arbitrary number go lower and lower. Same goes for certain exercise regimen, though that's a little less unhealthy at the positive extremes.

Finally there's a general misunderstanding of normal bodyweight altogether. 120 or below is thrown around like it's supposed to be some universal constant when it fails to account for so many different heights, body types, and genetic dispositions. One person can be incredibly healthy at 190 if said person's metabolic makeup happens to work out that way. There are certainly petite individuals who are also quite healthy at 120. And in all cases a healthy weight is defined as being within a certain range and not just at one specific number. The best way to find out is to visit your friendly neighborhood dietician. Sometimes one's physical appearance at this stage doesn't match up with the perceived norm, but that's just the hand one was dealt, not to mention it's not normal to look like a funky ribbed skeleton either. Now if you wanna talk about purely cosmetic surgery (as opposed to weight-loss surgery) then you're getting more into personal preference territory.

There's also the select few, as others have said, just looking for some assured validation, due to self-esteem issues.

At the root of it all though is a greater emphasis on looking good instead of being healthy, which while they both tend to go together is the wrong order of priority.
