Why is Resident Evil Code Veronica so underrated?

I actually had it on Dreamcast but never played much of it. Probably 1-2 hours of it. I liked what I played, and I hope to eventually get a second chance if they decide to release or remake it for Steam.

There's really not much wrong with it that isn't also wrong with 1/2/3 and real-time polygonal backgrounds was a good technological step up. It's not the greatest RE, but it was really impressive to see on Dreamcast when it came out and it was also the point where that exact formula had been done quite a few times in a few years already, after RE2 had set a really high bar. Not many people played it in it's initial time and instead played it later on PS2, where it wasn't a cool new RE and Dreamcast game anymore, but instead just a then standard RE on PS2 that wasn't cutting edge. A lot of people probably played it around the same time as RE:Make and RE4, and those two are already pitted against each other in the "there can be only one" RE argument as it is.

nah. It wanted to be an action game despite still having the survival horror controls. Story and setting were also kinda generic by RE standards (others like CVX might be goofy/crazy, but at least not tired).
And Nemesis was handled poorly compared to Mr. X prior and Lisa Trevor later.

I think it's the game with dual-wielding that tries to be an action game.

Even if a lot of people think its not the best, I never understood how so many RE fans say this game is trash. I love all the RE games and CV is my favorite, I don't get what actually makes it bad instead of just not as great as *insert favorite*.

It was on the underselling Dreamcast, it was much longer than the others, it contains a few sections where you can fuck up everything with a bad save, the OG story was ok, the expanded canon version while on PS2 it looked below par to games coming out around it's release (MGS2, FFX, GTA3).

It's a great game and was my favourite until REmake and RE4, but it's still in the higher tier of the series for me.

CODE: Veronica is the point where the crazy narrative fans took root. CODE: Veronica is when we went from an evil corporation and zombie outbreak to Matrix Wesker, naked women trying to conquer the world using ants and other stupid shit. CODE: Veronica is where we went from interesting puzzles and settings to annoying level design and keys hidden under potted plants.

CODE: Veronica was hot garbage, remains hot garbage, and sits in the shit-tier of Resident Evil games along with Dead Aim and Resident Evil: Boat. And now we have to hear about how RE4 betrayed these great roots.

ReMake/RE2/RE3/RE4 are the only really great games.

I love how Steve is constantly creeping on Claire the entire game.

Claire: Let me send a message to my brother. * bends over*

And he nearly creams himself when Claire falls on him after the plane crash.

This is why I don'the hate Steve the man has great taste!

I really liked the serious tones, especially in regards to the Trevor family, that were prevalent in REmake. Still some cheesiness, but nothing like the bad VAs of the original or the plot/narrative elements in Veronica-onward.

Hopefully they do something similar in REmake2. There's a lot to be done with Birkin, the internal conflicts within Umbrella and the city, and Claire's concern for Chris and her realization on what he went through.

Probably too much to expect from Capcom after their past decade + of output.

I disliked actually playing CV pretty intensely, but I value it's existence because it gave me and my friends good comedy material from when it first came out even up to this day.

Wesker getting punked by Alexia was the stuff of legends.

Dude was annoying AF.
Fatthhhhheeeerrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Fuck Steve.

"Fatherr... father... boo-hoo-hoo-hoo *sobs*"

*Screen Fades to Black*

"UH-HOO-HOO-HOO *continues to sob*"

I played it about a year ago on the HD collection. The cut scenes and characters were hilariously bad. Sooo good in that regard. I'm sure if 10 year old me played it when it came out I'd have thought it was awesome though.

So how necessary is RE3 really?

If you're primarily interested in advances in the game design and general atmosphere of the series? Very.

If you're primarily interested in the Resident Evil series lore? Lmao you're interested in the Resident Evil series lore

It's one of my favorites. I remember the game giving nightmares after renting the game for Dreamcast when I was 10. Had no fucking business playing it. Even Carrier was fucking scary to me then lol. Code Veronica fucked me up, but the desire to play the game never abated. The game floored me with it's pesentation at the time. Really memorable game, for me at least.

I don't know why either. It's really great and an improvement over RE1/2. The story was super cheesy but enjoyable because of how much it fully embraced those B-movie roots. RE stories shouldn't be taken that seriously IMO. The exploration was turned up a notch, as was the scope of the game. The soundtrack is fantastic, and it was nice to be out of Raccoon City and in a cold and desolate location. I had a great time with Code Veronica. Shame the gun sound effects are so horrible.

CV > 3, real talk.
I wouldn't go that far, only because CV took a few step backs from the gameplay improvements introduced in 3.

It's worse than RE2.

Also it falls much deeper in the uncanny valley than the others. Sometimes attempting to improve the graphics and stuff, but not enough to make them photorealistic, and have voice-acting that's not up to the quality, then you should had rather stayed on the old style.
Just take the look at the Prototype of REzero, the old style somehow looks more appealing than the new one.

Also, CV wasn't that well directed. Waking up in on a prison in an island full of Zombies should have been a much scarier concept. That action FMV at the start should have been removed to build some mystery.

Code Veronica is tied with Revelations 2 as the hardest RE on hard difficulty, imo.

For me, I liked it a bit less than I expected, but still enjoyed it. I think the puzzles are kind of not fun a lot of the time in the title, has some real bullshit scenarios you can get stuck at if you don't come with the right load-out, or at least can make things a LOT harder for you. Back-trackijg felt like a drag a bit in this title.

But I did like it. Steve is hilarious, the villains are over-the-top and great, the music is among some of the series best, some of the environments are just entrancing and intriguing, and a few cool twists to gameplay due to it being a fully 3D environment.

Not my favorite RE, but I liked it.

I'm always surprised when somebody says that Code Veronica is difficult.

- The game gives you way too much weapons/ammo and healing items, that you sometimes don't even get the chance to use, unless you shoot at a wall.

- Zombies have almost no chance of causing damage to you. Whenever a zombie grabs you, you can push them off before they get a bite in. Probably the reason you have stockpiles of health items by the end of the game.

- The knife! Best weapon in Code Veronica. Probably the reason you end up having too much weapons/ammo unused by the end of the game.

Anyway it's my favourite Resident Evil. Bought it for the Dreamcast, PS2 and Gamecube. I wish that Capcom would at some point release it on Steam.

Love how OP'd the knife is. Makes me want to do a knife-only run, when I really hate the knife on any REs (apart from 4 and RE2).

Insufficient ammo and healing supplies. If you don't come into that fight with enough stockpiled then you can't advance, nor can you get more resources. It's a notorious fight for being completely impassible for lots of people for that reason.

Yeah, I remember having to start my game over because of this boss battle.

Pissed me off something fierce.

Nah, the game was just high on a bunch of very hip cinematic influences at the time (John Woo, Titanic, The Matrix). It's Code Veronica which tries harder to evoke a horror atmosphere, at least with its story and locales.

This being a Japanese game I expected
Steeve's monster form to have much more Tentacles.

Code Veronica is a good game, its from the era when RE was still going strong. I didn't see CV as a weak entry back then, but some things baffled me. Such as not aiming while on stairs, no decapitations, no evasive movement. It was also a tad slow. RE3 Nemesis for all the flak it gets really nailed the tank controls imo, and CV felt clunkier as a result.

But CV was the biggest and most cinematic RE, I liked that though this one has some really nasty backtracking going on.

They should've handled the Nosferatu fight differently, like just placing everything Claire took in the chest anyway. Or like, not being able to bring anything. Because really, you can perfectly win this battle by taking nothing with you. The Sniper will smoke him. But we didn't know and thus we took all our huge ass firepower.

As for Nemesis, its RE 2.5. Or RE2: Jill Chapter. It takes place during 2, same situation. CV is true RE3. Everyone knows but I think Sony had a hand in it. Regarding Nemesis' difficulty, its wtf. Easy is a joke, and Hard is Hard. But Hard ultimately gets easier because of exclusive items, Desert Eagle pretty much breaks the early game (but you do need the wit to beat Nemesis directly).

It's my favorite RE after 2 and REmake. I remember being blown away when I first played it on the Dreamcast. Is it a perfect game? Of course not, but none of the RE games are. RE:CV felt like a proper continuation and evolution of RE2, whereas RE3 felt more like an sidestory experiment.

Steve was definitely annoying (though I'll admit that playing it as a kid, his death scene did make me sad.). But I thought the Ashfords were brilliant as villains. They had just the right level of creepiness. I liked that Alfred's motivations as a villain were different than past RE villains - he just wanted to be with his sister again. He wasn't just evil for the sake of being evil, or just blindly hungry for power, like Wesker. His descent into psychosis was a really interesting turn for the series to explore.

I also loved the private Ashford residence on Rockfort, with its creepy dolls. One of the most memorable areas in the whole series. And the game's soundtrack is really great, as usual.

It totes justified my Dreamcast purchase. I constantly checked my in-game clock. I just couldn't believe that a Resident Evil game was clocking over 20+ hours. Amazing story with amazing villain.

A bit surprise that even with code veronica, some old-school fan still shit on it because it has full 3D background...

That's because going full 3D made backgrounds less detailed and more clean. Also, CODE: Veronica has much more pastel (cartoonish) color palette, is much more colorful than previous RE games.

Although I have to say that when I first saw the game, I was blown away by the graphics and cut-scenes. Imagine, a RE game where during cut-scenes characters actually talk, show their emotions and have a proper body language instead of constantly waving their hands. :O

I loved it back in the days and I was so glad when Capcom announced that it was coming to the PS2 as well.
In retrospect I have to say though that it took the series into a way to wacky direction. Wesker coming back was just stupid as he clearly wasn't supposed to for a long time.

Ahhhh I fuckin love you. RE3's goodness is so good.

I'm still very interested in the story of raccoon city.

God damit capcom, remaster outbreak and give us file 3.

i think CV was a good RE game.

However, reading gaf makes me believe i'm like the only one here that enjoyed RE:0. I really like it.

Masterpiece of a game, behind RE2 as the best of old RE. It's a huge game with a great RE story, has some of the best locations, monsters and boss battles of the series. RE3 was a strange action hybrid, kind of went away from what made the first two so great and this game goes right back to what made Old RE so much fun. It's the real RE3, RE3 is actually the side game.

Most importantly it was the return of Wesker, the best game villain of all time.

This thread is all over the place with responses.

I played through it on Dreamcast and remember loving it. If I remember right this was supposed to be the real RE3 and Nemesis was supposed to be the spinoff, but their was some confusion and conflict over what system and the timeframe of releases so they stuck the 3 on Nemesis at the time.
