Wii Specs!!!

I'm new here, but I guess it's because s.p.o.n.g writes bullshit and passes it off as gamig news. I'm still waiting for Pikmin Wii to be shown...
There was this guy named
F-word
, and he runs/writes for
S-word
, and he was a Gaffer. GAF apparently always gave him a hard time about his and
S-word
's spotty reputation, so about a year ago, at E3, he tried to make nice and invited everyone from GAF who was going to E3 over to a party at a bar which was going to be hosted by a Nintendo rep
F-word
knew, who was willing to write the whole thing off as a business expense.

The party got canned at the last minute, and
F-word
supposedly dropped by the bar to give everyone the bad news, but he didn't recognize anyone's faces, so he just assumed nobody showed up and he left. But GAF was there, got plastered, and picked up their own tab (some people supposedly picked up more of it than others).

When they got home, GAF lynched
F-word
, and expected him to personally pick up the entire tab. When he showed up he said "Oh snap!" and ran away. GAF banned him and forbade anyone from ever again speaking his name or his site's name.

I'll figure it out on myself...

Acording to iSuppli, the CPU in Xbox 360 cost $106.

The speed on that chip is 3.2GHz. Being that "Broadway" is 22.9% of "Xeons" speed, at 733Mhz, then its natural that Broadway likewise is 22.9% the cost of $106:

$24.28.

wow.

I don't know if it works that way. Also, don't forget that we're talking about a triple core chip vs. a single core chip here.

Divide by 6. XBox has three cores which support hyperthreading. $4.00!!!

Haha...that's bullshit.

IBM friend. If I said his location and department he worked in, uhhh, no I won't do that.
Don't care about being believed, you'll find out someday soon.

The false NEC chip order article started on a blog linking to no source. A blog.

No those are final numbers listed on a sheet given to developers on what to expect. When Matt ran with that article, a "Revolution Dev-kit" that he seen in person was nothing more than a GCN devkit and the remote plugged into the memory card slot.

yeah the numbers could still change, but I doubt it (for the CPU anyway) since my friend told me during e3 what the Mhz value is. And IBM has to finish testing it in May. When you change something, they have to start testing all over again from the beginning of the list. And they've kept the same values for April and May.

There was talk of final kits either: A) already being out to developers or B) not going out 'til June. You're talking like you're "in the know" so tell me, is June when final kits go out? And is the GPU simply not done yet?

Honestly, if the chip is only 733mhz with no advancement, all they would have to do is tap it to 90nm and the chip should cost almost NOTHING. Consider that a Gekko only has 21 million transistors compared to 165million for Xenon. That means given the same process technology it should take up 1/8th the area of Xenon. Also given the very low clockspeed and lack of complexity, you should see extremely good yields. So really the Wii chip if it is what paladin claims should cost less than $10 to produce PLUS it would have MUCH less R&D dollars required which means less overhead altogether and you can see it would be pretty much cheap as hell.

Can't say for sure since we know next to nothing about on-die cache space, which typically consumes most of the surface are of CPU dies (depending on the amount of on-die cache). I don't think it'll be as small as 1/8th, but certainly it will be smaller.

That's hard to say. My guess is that the R&D went into building the processor to support the ultra low voltage/ultra low clockspeed operation for WiiConnect and into optimizing the energy consumption overall. Finding a way to conserve energy (in this case, for the sake of keeping heat dissipation down) typically ends up costing more money.

I agree with the statement that the yields should be much higher than those of the X360 and PS3 simply due to the fact that the die will certainly be smaller and because there will be less cores.

I really don't think the main cost for the Wii is in the hardware like GPU and CPU...obviously ofcourse.:lol

Iwata said Nintendo spent their development dollars on the controller...and that the R&D he said was very expensive for it...nearly 2 year process of design and development. So it's really a case of Nintendo putting their money in their controller and not in the console.

With the Wiimote...Nintendo is already offering the consumer one small step into the world of VR...and Nintendo's next-console will be where they pull out...the crazy shít like headsets that plug into your brain...and holograms instead of TV's...lasers that burn flesh and all that crazy shít....:D

R&D increase:

Research and development costs incurred and charged to cost of sales, and selling, general and administrative expenses were ¥20,513 million ($191,712 thousand) and ¥15,825 million for the years ended March 31, 2005 and 2004, respectively.

Just a question. With the specs that we have right now, what could a game look like on the Wii that REALLY utilizes the Wii's power?

that's really impossible to answer.

Good point.

In any case, I was just thinking, and I realized that it's pretty damn sad that there were HARDLY any GC games that beat out the Factor 5 games in terms of graphical effects. And they came out early in the GC's life too.

I think people are forgetting that Nintendo always produce very efficient hardware - they're no amateurs when it comes to graphics technology. They'll be focusing on getting the best performance for the best price, they're not going to put a 1.1GHz processor in there over a 700MHz if they don't think the performance gains will be relative to the added cost. The Wii will be very impressive for what it is, you don't need to look much further than Super Mario Galaxy to see that. It's a different approach to the PC in a console box rubbish Microsoft pulled with the first Xbox. The two can't really be compared in terms of "specs".

I sure hope you're right. I dunno, but sometimes I think Iwata is doing it out of spite... as a way of self-handicapping themselves to prove a point to Sony & Microsoft.

Look at a screenshot of Super Mario Galaxy. It'll make you happy. Combine that with the remote and Connect24 and you've got a cutting-edge console for half the price of a PS3.

You'd REALLY have to compensate with the remote, because SMG's graphics aren't cutting edge...at all....

So what's wrong with it then, exactly?

Not to mention that is has quite possibly some of the greatest art direction in a game, ever. Graphics aren't only about technology.

Show me a platformer on Xbox/PS3 that looks better.

That's really the only problem I see Nintendo facing when it comes to technology - graphics bigots declaring a Wii game can't look good simply because it's on Wii. The sort of people who'd bin a Picasso for not looking "real enough".

Honestly? Blinx, Oddworld, or Otogi. I haven't had a lot of time with SFA, but that game's visuals are very much akin to Marios, with it's bright, glossy characters. SMG's environs are crisper and cleaner than SFA's though.

I said on PS3 or 360.

Oh :lol

Umm, Ratchet & clank? Kameo? I think that's it.
R&C hasn't been released. Kameo isn't a platformer.

Then you win, by default :lol
Yes, we are in agreement then. Super Mario Galaxy is the best looking platformer of the new generation systems.
