Wii U hardware sales up 666% in UK

For a system being criticized by some as a dedicated Mario box, I don't think releasing a third Mario Galaxy game a year after 3DWorld is going to change people's perception. They should just bring some emphasis back on the Mario games they've already released on the system and let Zelda take most of the limelight this/next year.

X is going to bomb hardcore (partially since I don't expect Nintendo to even attempt to properly market it), but it's definitely the sort of variety people have been demanding they have more of.

I would be pretty surprised if Nintendo didn't market X.

Realistically, it jumped from 3-4K to 20-24K. I don't think we can pop open the champagne yet. Why are so many people falling for the % trick? Sustainability or a new baseline is key, and I don't see either of those happening with the Wii U.
Any good news is good news when it comes to Wii U sales, and it just sold over a month and a half's worth of consoles in a weekend.

so instead of selling 1000 a month they are selling 6666?

does anyone know what the WiiUS SALES FIGURES IN THE UK WERE LAST MONTH.

Does anyone have the release weeks of Mario Kart DS and Wii? It'll be interesting to see which one was outsold, and the consensus was on those at the time.

Edit: Unless chart-track stupidly means console versions in which case this isn't a huge surprise at all as Mario Kart is bigger than ever so for it to launch higher than the GCN and N64 versions isn't a shock.

Indeed. But if a true 3D Mario looked as good or better then MK8 then sign me up now.

I am not sure if I want Galaxy sequel, Mario 64 sequel or something new. New Galaxy is sure to look amazing if they go that route. What I have no interest in is New More Super Mario Bros U X Ultra Edition.

Percentages can be deceiving, but this is a good thing for Wii U regardless. If this Mario Kart has legs like other Mario Karts, things could be starting to turn around a little bit for Wii U.

That's basically the same thing.

I feel pretty confident that Mario Kart Wii is the one with the record. IIRC Mario Kart DS was a slow start.

For what it's worth, Nintendo is practically irrelevant to UK so MK8 being #3 and 600+% increase in Wii U sales is a good sign going forward, regardless of actual numbers. It's not like every week a Wii U game charted in the UK, and within top 5 nonetheless.

Let's see how the charts stack up in other Euro countries like France, where Nintendo has a good presence.

Yeah but if you sell a few honderd a week +666% is not that much.
UK nintendo market is irralrvent sadly :(

By your reasoning that means that the ps3 and xbox sales of watchdogs are also irrelevant.
Mario Kart will continue to sell as well (they always do) but Wacthdogs will probably fade as it has terrible word of mouth.

Iwata summoning Satan himself to increase Wii U sales confirmed. Expect a PR statement at E3 about wanting to work outside of Nintendo for the good of the company, etc. etc.

They need a semi-open world Mario Adventure game. Take Mario 64 and blow it wide open.

It'd be something fresh and could utilise the NFC figures well.

Probably should've put more emphasis on the 'properly' in 'properly market'. I don't think they're going to intentionally send it out to die, but much like The Wonderful 101 it's an incredibly hard sell on such a niche system to an audience who isn't as used to the sort of gameplay it offers. Xenoblade's surprising success (at least in comparison to what NoA expected) in the west might give Monoith Soft some more name recognition though, but I doubt enough to make X that much more of a seller than 101 was.

Like Bayonetta 2, I'm glad they're making/funding/distributing it, but there's absolutely no way they're not going to be huge bombs.

I really want a Mario64 sequel. Nintendo please.

I think a nice 3D Mario as a farewell present for the WiiU in 2016 would be enough :)

Make it 2015 and I'd be happy.

Percentage figures mean nothing unless you have the original number. 666% is just 6.66 times the normal sale. Could mean 6 x 10,000 or maybe 6 x 1

Utterly meaningless anecdotes ahoy:

My brother-in-law, a Playstation AAA CoD/Assassin's Creed type bloke through and through who has never owned a Nintendo console before, got the MK bundle on Friday. My girlfriend had two people at work who knew we had a Wii U asking her where was the best place to buy one because they wanted to play Mario Kart.

As I say, completely meaningless, except in my experience this is the first time IRL that someone other than myself has even talked about the damn machine, let alone buy one. It could suggest a minor stir among the general public.

I'm expecting them to at least treat it like how Bravely Default if not better given that the game is internally developed by them.

The deciding factor will be whether it has legs or is just a short-term bump.

I could see the sales being more frontloaded than usual with Mario Kart because it's mostly hardcores owning the system now.

Yup, and 666% of fuck all is still almost fuck all.

The prospect of more Galaxy would have me torn. I know they'd knock it out of the park again and I'd love it but I think that Galaxy is still a little played out. I like it when the 3D Mario games are constantly trying new things because as long as the level design is consistently good I know that it'll be a good game regardless of mechanics.

I think the biggest news here is that Mario Kart 8 is the second biggest Mario Kart launch in the UK. This puts it inbetween the Wii and DS versions (I'm guessing) and we all know how well those consoles performed. Looks like there's a tiny glimmer of hope of at least a moderate Wii U bounce back. Mario Kart 8 did and still does have a huge online presence.

The bigger news here is that Watch Dogs just on either PS4 or Xbox One alone has launched bigger than any 7 out of the 8 Mario Kart games, including this one.

So?
Your post makes zero sense, unless you know how much the Wii U sold a week prior to these bundles. So how much did the HW sell?

Relax, it was a joke.

There's no way to know how many consoles were sold.
All we know is that MK8 sold ~100k at best.

Rounded correctly, that's 667%. The lowest sales I can figure out - and my maths may be off on this - that fits 666% with accurate rounding is 200->1331 (coming to 665.5% sales)

(Although I wouldn't put it past the news agencies putting the photogenic number in the report anyway, in which case any 3->20 proportionate calculation would fit the story)

Edit: Hmmm, although that's the lowest sales to hit 665.5% exactly. I'm sure there should be lower numbers that fit in the 665.5% - 666.5% range

Edit2: D'oh, there's the very obvious 100 -> 666 possibility. Which also leads to 50->333. There might still be something smaller in the range, though.

Edit3:

Not really, 666% means previous sales x 7.66.

I give up.

Iwata made a pact with the devil, he's going for drastic measures now. Wii U needs to be saved.

Only in the UK though. Regardless, a good start for both games in the UK. Hope they keep the momentum for the next weeks.
