Wii U hardware sales up 666% in UK

The bigger news here is that Watch Dogs just on either PS4 or Xbox One alone has launched bigger than any 7 out of the 8 Mario Kart games, including this one.

Well, MK has traditionally been a more leggy (wheely?) game than a big launcher, so that shouldn't necessarily be a surprise. Indeed, I wonder if there's a possibility that this one would actually have the opposite trajectory, which wouldn't be good news for Nintendo.

I'm sure that the lesson Iwata is taking from this is that they need to produce more Mario games and even less original IPs.

Definitely need to know even rough numbers to know how impressive this is, but it shows that people do actually give a damn about Nintendo's first party lineup even on a console as weak as the Wii U.

Smash 4 should be very interesting.

Mario Kart 8 - software.

It will be interesting to see the full charts and find out whether other bundled games show up in the charts.

Well yeah, MK8 is between 50k and 100k. There's no way WW sold anywhere near that.
As for the full charts, we have them. MK8 is the only WiiU title in the top 40.

Wow, that's pretty good. Now, if it did so well in UK, how well did it do in other countries? Will we get official numbers anytime soon?

Smash will be less interesting because Smash was never as big a franchise as MK.

You shouldnt edit our wii u chalkboard because it might bite back in the following weeks when sales possibly fall of a cliff again.

I'm in the UK and have had a couple of people ask me (as the only Wii U owner they know) whether they should buy one just for Mario Kart.

It's a great party box. My Wii U probably has a wider variety and higher quality of local multiplayer games than my PS3. NintendoLand, WiiSports Club, MK, Wii Party and Karaoke all good for a laugh, plus SSB when that's out.

It's still a touch too expensive though from what I'm hearing. A lot of people seem to think £200 is the price point with a game. If Nintendo can get the cost down to that (and that's what I bought it for over a year ago at HMV) in time for Christmas I think a revival could be on the cards. They've quietly built up a decent base of quality games that make it a worthwhile impulse purchase.

I'd like to see them focus on local multiplayer even more, it's been completely abandoned by the other two in favour of online. Announced MK Battle Arena DLC at E3, get a version of Worms and other classic MP games on there quickly, maybe some NintendoLand DLC as well. Then release a Wii U version of Metroid Prime Hunters with 5 player local play and gameplay like GoldenEye64.

Then just get the single player big guns like AC and Zelda out. Frankly, even if no more games came out, at £200 that's well worth while.

Nintendo is really pushing MK and the bundle so I'm glad it's working out. The problem is going to be sustaining this momentum but it's still a great improvement.

It probably did a lot better out of the UK. We'll here how it did in Japan in a couple days. I think we have to wait for NPD numbers in the US or if Nintendo says it.

I think that's why it's so close to E3. People playing for two weeks, think "Ok, this is pretty awesome, but what's next?" and then bam, Nintendo's Digital Event.

You're kidding yourself if you think announcements will keep selling the console with no real new games coming out any time soon. In two weeks numbers will be back to low norm.

Not "combined platforms" since MK8 will only be in the May NPD for 2 days, but it's probably ahead of it with individual formats.

Nah Watch_Dogs on PS4 will lead just like in UK.

"no real new games coming out any time soon"

What does that even mean and how do you know that? All we know is that both Bayonetta 2 and Hyrule Warriors are slated for summer release in Japan and Nintendo has been into doing worlwide launches close to each other recently, so...

Well with the fact their original new IPs keep not selling, that has been clear for several years.

And that is certainly not related to what their new IPs are (strange niche titles that nobody is asking for such as Freakyforms, Spirit Camera, Wonderful 101) or how they are promoted (i.e.: not at all).

Watch Dogs has just shown once again how successful a new IP can be.

Both are niches titles they won't move a lot of systems.

Worked for the PS4!

Nope. PS4 always had third party support which is something WiiU doesn't have.

So is Watchdogs?

If MK didn't come close to XB1 and PS4 Watchdogs skus in UK, why would it in the US?

Because Nintendo has a better presence in the US than in UK?

It really is possible to see WD beat MK8 overall given that it accommodates 5 platforms, all have a better install bases than Wii U.

But let's not kid ourselves that UK is the indication of how a game will perform sales-wise. It is just one country, and not even the biggest market out there.

Not really, 666% means previous sales x 7.66.

Good point, although the difference between being "up by" vs "up to" a certain percent are so frequently misunderstood that my calculation may inadvertently be correct. I was going by the thread title which is more ambiguous than what was claimed in the article.
