Wii U hardware sales up 666% in UK

In UK tradition, everyone will try and sell their Wii U a few months later, once they're bored of Mario Kart 8.

So you're saying it's gonna be kinda like this?

the actually good news is that MK8 has a monstrous lasting appeal, so hopefully these people keep playing the console insteada selling it after one month

anyway,

This is good news in the end.

I loved the GameCube even if it wasn't successfull overall, but it gave me RE4, REbirth, PRIME, Viewtiful Joe and Luigi's Mansion. Some of my most beloved games EVER.

So even if WiiU is "doomed" he already gave me DKCTF (best platform in years and best game of 2014 so far), MK8, W101 while still waiting for Bayo2, SSB and X.

Maybe it will give me a bunch of games in the end, but it seriously risks to became one of my most beloved consoles nonetheless (it's already better than the first Xbox that gave me HALO CE, Panzer Dragoon Orta, JSRF, Riddik and really nothing else as accomplished as WiiU top-titles (maybe I'm forgetting something, but sure not much).

and during the coming years. No third party means you are forever destined to have a patchy release schedule with software droughts.

It's still not sunk in for people yet, has it?

Maybe it'll sink in after all the 'not this year' delays at E3.

patchy software schedule and software droughts isn't going to be the WiiUs problem alone.

Motivated, feelgood training montage with Iwata now, please.

With him and Reggie running in the surf and hugging.

I know that was from III and not II, but still.

Also, big launch and inevitable strong word of mouth means that if anything has the chance of being the title that breaks the dam and starts the flood, or healthy trickle, it's this one.

I wonder if it'll be the second best selling Mario Kart in the US? If it is it pretty much confirms that at least some of the Wii's expanded userbase is still out there, I think, I'm not sure how this works. :P

Also, I'm dreading that I can't get MK8 till the fourth, I need it so badly! All I got right now is the extra levels in DKCTF that I never finished, and all they're doing is pissing me off. Who seriously invented Bopopolis?

Oh shit it was foretold all along

Kudos for bringing this one back! Couldn't be more appropriate ever.

Always glad to hear positive news regarding the Wii U (or any system for that matter), but even more so when it comes paired with such coincedences (or "coincedences") with strange numbers or percentages.

Nintendo effed up.

they got nothing lined up after this boost. I'm sure it will last for a couple of weeks at the most, but another "AAA" from Nintendo would have helped tremendously in keeping up the demand.

damn shame.

Bayonetta 2? X? Smash Bross?

I think the biggest news here is that this is the second best MK launch week ever. For a Nintendo console seen as the worst among Nintendo consoles this is a real achievement. If this is replicated in Japan and US then this might mean that Nintendo can still make it profitable and support it until they are really ready to properly launch new hardware.

Woo! I was holding out hope it would be the system seller it needs :)

Fecking everyone loves Mario Kart. It has Minecraft like interest from the casual gamer. You'd expect most parents/grandparents would grab NSMB and Mario Kart before anything else. Pretty sure my in-laws are going to grab a MK bundle this Xmas and pack the Wii/Mario Kart combo away finally.

Plenty of fairly predictable replies already, but:

  • A significant hardware boost and a strong debut is a Good Thing.
  • Percentage increases can be deceptive, and a massive percentage increase doesn't necessarily translate to a massive boost in unit sales if the baseline was already low.
  • The importance of MK8 is in how it improves the wider performance of the system, which won't be apparent for a while. A strong first week is fine, but sustaining HW sales and driving new customers to the platform is better.
  • This doesn't "save" the Wii U, but just as with any other struggling platform a strong software release that gets plenty of attention helps.

Well, that's just great. Now I have nothing of value to add. Thanks. :/

Seriously though, great post and I agree. As good as the news is, how much it lifts the system over time is going to be the key issue. And considering how thin the rest of the year's release schedule is, I'm not sure if Nintendo is in a position to even capitalize on this in the short term (i.e. the next few months). But we'll see.

Percent increases are pretty useless without knowing what it sold week before. Probably that 95% increase for PS4 was way bigger unit wise than this 666% increase for WiiU. When it comes to purely software MK8 did really well though.

Completely anecdotal, I was in a gamestop this weekend (US) and they sad they completely sold out of all new and used WiiUs and most other gamestops in the area had done so as well. It might be a really big month for them.

Bayonetta 2? X? Smash Bross?

Bayonetta and X will do very little (kind of like how Wonderful 101 did) for the console. Only one to cause a big boost again will be Smash, and that's till the end of the year. Basically half a year of the console will be dormant once again.

I really don't see Bayonetta and X as hot sellers at all.

Wow, that "Iwata sold his soul" schtick got old fast.

Best bit about % threads is how people cant do maths :p
Indeed, always good for a laugh. The best threads are the ones that break down how many gamers play what console and the percentages don't add up to 100%.

I highly doubt Sony is concerned even a little bit. A more accurate gif would have everyone else in the room chit chatting when someone notices Iwata twitched, one goes over for a look and returns to report it was just gas escaping.

If they sell their Wii Us then someone somewhere will have to buy them.
Not necessarily, used game shops had mountains of N64's no one would buy. Either way, Nintendo isn't moving more systems (although it moves more games to whatever extent they aren't purchased used as well).

I believe it was taken in Britain.

Good news. I've been hearing that a lot of stores in the UK have sold out of the game. I always thought that MK would increase sales.

For what it's worth, MK8 jumped to first place on GAME's most wanted chart, it was on 5 before. Maybe this title can actually spark some interest in the system in the UK.

so I've 3 WiiU games now (4 with the MK8 promo code) and still now WiiU...

Should I wait for E3, a price cut in the next X months or just go and buy one now? (it's still 299€ here :S)

I mentioned on my podcast last night that guys I work with that I didn't even think knew what the Wii U was were playing it this past weekend. Surprised the hell outta me.

amazon.uk
amazon.it
amazon.ca
amazon.fr
