Wii U hardware sales up 666% in UK

Smash is the type of game that people will want to get once they are attached to the characters.

If some kid has been playing donkey kong , super mario world, pokemon, etc. when they see an advert for smash brothers they are going to be all over that.

My 7yo is going to want it bad, but unfortunately Smash Bros is a PEGI 12, so he won't be getting a look in. I'd imagine most parents aren't that strict though, considering what age ranges play COD.

There are a lot of "standing" titles that will get a boost in sales once people are done with Mario Kart... but Mario Kart has legs, and I fully expect that Nintendo is going to come out of this sales bump with an overall increase month to month sales.

Too much negativity on what was supposed to be a good news for Wii U, specifically for MK8. GAF being GAF I guess lol.

Yup GAF is terrible, no idea why anyone posts here. Anyhoo, there is also a lot of irrational exuberance in this thread (which overall seems to outweigh any "negativity" thus invalidating your point). To some extent the "negativity" you've observed is a natural response to the overweening positivity, and also it's simply reality being reality. I guess (can't bring myself to use the last part).

The good news is, people buying a Wii U now have lots of great games to catch up on.

That is indeed a good thing. It is for me certainly since I've waited longer to buy a Wii U than any other Nintendo console (other than the NES but that was an age/parental issue). The problem on the other side of the coin is how many games will those people have to buy going forward?

I think most people last gen bought a Wii as a Nintendo box, first and foremost. Casuals and gamers alike.

It won't change much this time, though indie games will fill the gap between big Nintendo releases.

Not sure if you mis-linked as that was just a guy with a headset talking the whole time. Here's footage of the updated OS:

I have an issue saying that is evidence of a speedier OS, what I are is the Wii U booting first to a Wii U OS Lite while it loads the regular full size OS. Yes, it gets you into a game faster so yeah! to that, but the main OS remains unacceptably slow IMHO. We will see...

It would be wonderful with a Wii U sales bump due to Mario Kart 8, but Nintendo should still be in crisis mode trying to figure out how to survive mid to long term. The most sensible path for them seems to be consolidating 3ds and Wii U game development to ensure a steady flow of first party releases on all their platforms. This strategy will be even more viable in the future considering the fast technical progress in handheld hardware compared with console hardware (less compromises due to having to support a handheld version). It is not out of the question that they have another game changing idea like Wii Sports in the pipeline, I guess, but it does not seem very likely for the near future ...

The added benefit is every one of the new bundle owners has MK8 and a new great older game, ideally to be exposed to more features of the system.

Still will likely finish 3rd in this gen, but at least it may sell well enough to keep CoD/AssCreed even after the PS360 versions stop.

True. I did only say it was footage of the *updated* OS, so you can't do me for it! ;) But things like Miiverse need to get a lot faster if people are going to be interested in dipping in and out of them.

Nintendo would be in far better situation if Mario Kart wasn't the only major release on the system for the near-term future.

It'll get CoD, MKX, Lego Batman 3, wash_doges, Skylanders, Just Dance, Marvel: Infinity and Yoshis Yarn and Bayonetta 2 this year from announced titles alone, plus at least one more unannounced title from Nintendo.

Honestly I think the free game was such a smart move. It likely made no difference to anyone buying MK8 (I mean, was anyone on the fence about buying MK8 and having a free game tipped them?), but what it will do is give new Wii U adopters another taste of Nintendo goodness once the MK8 hype has calmed after a few weeks.

Being happy for a system doing good in a country considered a "lost cause" for Nintendo is not something you should feel bad about lol. It's not like every week you'll see a sudden jump in Wii U sales in UK, and a Wii U game being competitive for the top spot in the UK charts. Wii U doing good even for a short amount of time means profit for Nintendo and also means keeping the support for it alive. Those saying Wii U is "saved" is most likely not serious anyway lol so don't be too serious about it. Wii U owners, especially the MK8 owners, are just glad that it launched successfully and it really is deserving for MK8 to be experienced by as many as possible.

This will come in handy in sales-age threads, but Balmer and Matrick are still there in this pic, guys.

Fair enough. I love Mario Kart and own all of them (except 8 for obvious reasons), even that terrible GBA game, so when I buy a Wii U I will have Mario Kart 8 in the same bag. I'm glad people are enjoying it and more people are, for now, joining them. There is no reason for people not to, within reason, enjoy this. You are so bollocks(not sure that is the right word) huzzah to you.

Possible, though indie games seem to be drying up. Also the Wii U is more expensive and lacks the mass market fave of motion controls (yes it has motion controls, better even, but it's not a mass market fave anymore).

It'll get CoD, MKX
It may the former. I doubt the latter - it's most certainly not coming in 2014, when no other platforms are. A new Just Dance has yet to be announced, although it will presumably grace the platform. It sold better on the XBO last year from memory. Essentially, all of these titles besides those published by Nintendo will also be on the other 8th gen systems, so listing them out only really serves to illustrate the disparity, as these titles aren't the only ones releasing for the other 8th gen systems.

Between now and October/November, when most of those titles release on all platforms, the Wii U has two retail titles - an Activision licensed Transformers game releasing on everything at the end of June, and a One Piece title in early July. That was the near-term future I was referring to, not four months from now.

The next XBO/PS4 retail release is tomorrow. The next after that in a fortnight. Including those there are 8 or 9 retail releases slated for the other two 8th gen systems before the slew of titles in October, again, 5 of them on October 7th.

So again, the situations are not similar.

MKX?

Where did you see that?

PS4 and XB1's October release schedule is bigger than that.

Been playing around with my new WiiU all weekend and loving it so far. But one thing I really want.

Screenshots! It seems you can only upload them to Miiverse which sucks :(

Ever since Watch_Dogs launched MK8 has been #1 on the Amazon.ca Best Sellers chart. I'll be (pleasantly) surprised if this game can "save" the Wii U but at least something is finally making a dent.

When you take the screen shot just open the Wii U browser and head to any image hosting site and you can upload them there as well!
