If it takes Mario kart 8 for people to recognize how awesome the Wii u is then so be it. I've had a blast with the system and looking at the releases upcoming this year; it's only going to get better!

No they don't! Nintendo's lame! Hey everybody see how lame Nintendo is! Better avoid E3, Nintendo would just lame it up!

so I've 3 WiiU games now (4 with the MK8 promo code) and still now WiiU...

Should I wait for E3, a price cut in the next X months or just go and buy one now? (it's still 299€ here :S)

For one thing, you have to get your code for the free game within the next month. Otherwise the offer has expired. So waiting till after E3 is ok, but not too long.

However, it may be possible to get the code via the Nintendo website and not using it till after the offer expired. But I wouldn't dare test that.

The promo code has an expiry date (three actually, one for entering the promo, one for selecting the game and one for downloading it). The downloading part is September (if you don't think you'll get the system by the deadline, sell the code).

My feeling is MK8 will keep system prices high for a while (or rather the good deals will be snapped up a lot faster making them harder to get).

So if we use Amazon UK for arguments...
Mario Kart 8 bundle is #55 I guess that 666% are "a few" consoles...

I highly doubt Sony is concerned even a little bit. A more accurate gif would have everyone else in the room chit chatting when someone notices Iwata twitched, one goes over for a look and returns to report it was just gas escaping.

agreed, they have no time to be concerned, too busy doing so about the Vita

Tell us how you really feel.

Part has already been said in the thread, namely percentages only mean something when you know the base (North Korea only reports economic data randomly and as percentages for a reason). Otherwise reality is what it is, shouldn't need explaining.

I highly doubt they are too worried about that as well. The Vita was a mistake (apologies to a certain poster on this page), but not a costly one, and will keep on trucking with little further effort or concern from Sony as a niche indie/otaku device. Besides, with the PS4 it'll quickly become a rounding error in Sony's game division.

Need a luigi death stare version.

Color me pleasantly surprised at the lack of "666% x 0 = 0 lol" comments.

Some people in that one thread said Mario Kart is not a system seller.

"200k copies at most, breh."

Was pretty silly. Mario Kart is pretty motivating software even on an otherwise struggling system.

lol you are for real. North Korea comparisons? haha

Mario Kart is selling well, deal with it.

While Amazon sales charts are not exactly the best way to gauge actual sales (just look at the difference between UK weekly chart track reports and Amazon UK weekly sales) it seems a lot of people are using the "best sellers" amazon charts, which are "temporary" only, so fairly dynamic. The best one to use is the 2014 one, or at the very least the monthly charts.

Wow if Mario Kart is able to do this in the UK of all places I can imagine what Smash bros is going to do. If Nintendo announces one more big core title for this year they can have a decent chance at a turn around, and they'll have an insane line up. Hopefully that Pokken Fighters game is announced and releases this year. Nintendo did say this year was going to target more "competitive" players. They can build on this surge by having a killer e3 to increase hype. Zelda U should definitely turn some heads to the Wii U.

Mario Kart is bigger than Smash Bros.

That US 2014 so far bestseller list all kinds of hilarious. I was like Bravely Default ahead of Titanfall Xbox, GZ and Pokémon... wut? and yeah obviously MK7 is outselling Watch Dogs on it.

It's doing well in 2014 also, ahead of Watch dogs in the US.

I hope this makes Nintendo realize how important online play is nowadays. I don't know if I'm gonna bite at last but right now what makes most wanna buy this thing is to be able to join the club.

Focus on online damn it.

I'm hoping that Nintendo has been taking notes this whole passed year. I think a good butt whooping like the one the Wii U's gotten is healthy for Nintendo. They need that dose of reality, and they need to actually invest in understanding what western gamers want. I hope they're watching how well Sony is doing.

Mario Kart is bigger than Smash Bros.

Smash is the type of game that people will want to get once they are attached to the characters.

If some kid has been playing donkey kong , super mario world, pokemon, etc. when they see an advert for smash brothers they are going to be all over that.

I never said otherwise. I'm just saying I doubt Smash will do more for the Wii U in both the short and long term than MK8.

The June OS update will likely get raving reviews as well, just look at how fast it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VsTTP2fiUqE - (edited with the right link)

Nintendo needs to leverage Wii U's underdog/"Nintendo box" status. Probably release post E3 a new "because it's Nintendo" ad.

I agree...but I also miss the days when there were more couch co-op games on all platforms. I appreciate that Nintendo still covers this base. Going forward I hope they can successfully meld online with co-op. It seems that too many devs drop local co-op if they implement online multi...which just sucks.

Wow, you actually thought I was comparing the Wii U with North Korea? Good grief. Anyways, did I say Mario Kart 8 wasn't selling well? Don't seem to recall saying that but given the above I'm not surprised you thought you read that somewhere in my comments.

To help you out and make it as clear as possible, yes Mario Kart 8 is selling well. This is not a surprise as all Mario Karts, except maybe the awful GBA one, have sold well. I would expect nothing less of Mario Kart 8. The issue to which I was referring is whether the Wii U is "saved". The reality is this does not "save" it, anymore more than Mario Kart DD "saved" the GCN, unless by save you mean it will limp along for 2 or 3 more years and not be fire saled to hell and back in a year. The gif in question indicates quite a bit more improvement than that low metric. As to the North Korea mention, it was simply a general point on why percentage increase themselves are not that useful or revealing. It was in no way a comparison to the Wii U itself.

Hope that helps.

It's still not sunk in for people yet, has it?

Maybe it'll sink in after all the 'not this year' delays at E3.

patchy software schedule and software droughts isn't going to be the WiiUs problem alone.

Yet it is a problem that will occur far more often with the WiiU and with far greater severity.

There are like 9 games releasing for the XBO and PS4 in October alone.
Three new games were just announced for these platforms in the last day or so.
Number of [retail] releases will in all certainty reduce this generation, with publishers consolidating on fewer, bigger titles.
But the situations aren't remotely similar.

Nintendo would be in far better situation if Mario Kart wasn't the only major release on the system for the near-term future.
