Wii U hardware sales up 666% in UK

Course not, watch dogs is on many more platforms than MK8. Though individually I can see it happening or at least coming close to the PS4 version.
It won't. It already lost launch week and the gap will only widen as the install base does. (In favor of the PS4)
You see high install base leads to high game sales. Wii U has a very low install base in the UK and US. That is the limiting factor.

The UK pretty much ignores Nintendo, so I wouldn't look at any numbers from here to determine if the Wii U is going to have a healthy year or not.

It goes without saying that percentages alone don't tell us much, so I think we'll need to wait a month before getting a real indication of MK8's impact on hardware sales. Anything but a plummet will be great news.

This was to be expected a sales "spike" for the Wii U, its all well and good, but the system needs more titles of the calibre of MK 8, if it can even be remotely termed as a console worth getting in the long-term...

On another note I wonder what Nintendo will show @ E3?

Mario Kart 8 is likely a game Nintendo will continue to market year long. That series has legs and usually moves console even post launch.

Huh. So, I guess Mario Kart really did save the Wii U. The blackboard was wrong, for once.
Not really.

It is still possible. When a new game comes out on the PS4, would WD maintain its legs going forward? That is yet to be seen when games like Destiny, Farcry 4, etc. come out.

Well, with MK8 the Wii U apparently gained good momentum.
Had they put their focus on the Wii U version of Smash Bros 4 instead of the 3DS version that momentum could've turned into a big rocket I guess. But Nintendo is pretty good at screwing themselves over sometimes.

Let's just hope that this spike in hardware sales is putting Nintendo out of panic mode, because Panic Mode Nintendo is Best Nintendo.

You forget that the 3DS is there lifeline, if it fails, they fail. It's much an easier and more important task to keep the 3DS afloat.

If they make a risky bet on the Wii U and fail, it's game over.

Can't help but feel that the WiiU version would be out already or releasing very soon if not for having to develop a 3DS version as well.

Okay, now double down on MK8. DLC, fix the servers, marketing, whatever. Keep this shit hyped and ride it until Smash. Hopefully there's more announcements meanwhile.

Well, release day of Mario Kart was last friday, so we aren't even talking about a weekly increase of hardware sales but maybe not even three days.

Well, we didn't know what was behind the scenes during the development of Smash. For all we know, 3DS games are faster to develop as the technology is pretty much mature right now, plus both must be synched as they share the same roster plus some stages.

Let's not focus too much on Smash Wii U release. There's still Bayonetta 2 slated for Summer in Japan and Hyrule Warriors following close. So 2 new Wii U games known to be released before Smash.

The crash is inevitable, but people are starting to acknowledge wii u's existence. If only nintendo was able to market all his games so well...

I think people are well aware of the WiiU, they just don't want one. To my mind the problem is that the WiiU is simply a failed concept. Alright, Nintendo's first party output will always sell to the faithful but no one else seems to think the WiiU is remotely attraction as a consumer purchase.

That gamepad was a gimmick too far and Nintendo are paying the price.

Good news, and deserved considering MK8 is fantastic. First MK game I've played online, and I couldn't wipe the smile off my face for a second while trying it out, crazy fun.

With the amount of quality exclusives on the console now, Nintendo deserves some good news, but whether this sales boom lasts... hmmmm :(

I'll genuinely be surprised if Bayonetta 2 causes a blip.

Will it last?

Depends what happens at E3. I know me personally, I've been holding off on picking up a MK8 bundle until after E3, because of the new hardware rumors. I'll be getting one either way, just want to make sure a major revision isn't on the way (not expecting a new console or anything).

Second best Mario Kart launch ever while being on a "dead" console.

Everything is going as planned :)
Well, all Nintendo consoles did pretty shit in Europe before Wii, so it's not like the rest of the world where Super Mario Kart and Mario Kart 64 would've set monster highs.

I bet no one said it would rise in sales over 600% in the UK last week, and therefore that it is not expected.

DLC cups and characters would be a great announcement for E3..of course there's nothing to stop them going another step and making their NFC figures work with Mario Kart come the end of the year (to download/unlock non-franchises characters) which would be a great way to spur MK8 software sales again.

If they keep to their current schedule we will hopefully have X, Hyrule warriors and Bayonetta 2 to fill in the gap between Mario Kart 8 and Smash. Another HD remake this year wouldn't surprise me..and then there's stuff like Yarn Yoshi, Pokken Fighters and Fatal Frame V (some of which might hit this year..in Japan at least).

Sales will drop next week but Watch Dogs did indeed launch on Tuesday in the UK (many Game stores had a midnight opening).

...and Tesco was selling MK8 on Wednesday (and possibly earlier - I got my copy on Wednesday though) so...

I think it's very likely MK8 will be a bit more frontloaded than usual, and MK8 isn't going to "save" the system, but it's a damn good game that seems to be received very well and will likely spark some interest in the system.

I came into this thread solely to see how many posts it would take before the Luigi gif was postedd. The answer: far too long. Step it up, GAF.

It is good that the Wii U is seeing a boost, but really, we all knew that this was going to happen and we all know what's going to happen next. The next huge jump will be after Sm4sh, and then that'll pretty much be it.

I'll genuinely be surprised if Bayonetta 2 causes a blip.

Not really expecting it to sell much, but at least it will not keep the Wii U owners hanging after MK8. The important thing is to continue releasing titles while waiting for the anticipated titles. One Piece, Bayonetta 2, Hyrule Warriors and possibly "X" will be there to fill the gaps.

Isn't the usual problem going to be the lack of releases coming after MK8

The problem will be the lack of releases for the rest of its life.

With Smash and Mario Kart, this will likely end up being the Wii U's best year in terms of hardware/software sales... but its too late to really turn the ship around. Too bloody late.

666% lol I couldn't make that shit up even if I wanted to.

An image of Southpark's Saddam Hussain and Satan is crying out to be photoshopped right now.

In UK tradition, everyone will try and sell their Wii U a few months later, once they're bored of Mario Kart 8.
