Wii U update live. Nintendo loves us again.

So the disc still spins while playing Wii Virtual Console games. *facepalm*

Also, I still have to go and change the output resolution to 480i in order to play my old Virtual Console games in their correct 4:3 aspect ratio. *facepalm again*

Miiverse still takes forever to load, was that not part of this update? I'm sorry Nintendo, still not good enough imo :(

Miiverse and eShop is not just OS its also connecting to the internet, loading and leaving games and other stuff that has nothing to do with connecting online is wayyyyyy faster.

The system settings are a discrete app, not part of the system menu, so don't expect that to improve drastically. And really, it's not like you open the settings five times a day, so who gives a fuck?
Well, I open the settings multiple times a day when I play NFS (toggling between butter-smooth, freeze-less offline play and the normal online modus operandi) and I don't give a fuck. So yeah.

Man, I've been trying to update for actually 8 hours and never has it worked.

For a while I would just get timeout errors, which would let me retry and it picked up from where it left off. But then when it got to the '1 minute left' part, it would encounter an 'error' and force me to restart the console and start again from scratch.
I've gone through and done this 4 times now, and have tried resetting the modem and router. Internet seems to be working fine on the PC/iPhone/everything else on the network.

It's at 13 minutes remaining and hasn't timed out yet this last time, so I'm optimistic it might work this time, but god damn this has not been fun.

I'm sure it's been asked a bunch, but why is the systems settings menu still so slow to open up?? like everything else is relatively fast, but that system settings menu just boggles my mind.

Also I feel like while the OS is faster, it's really inconsistent...like sometimes it's lightening quick, and sometimes it will look like it goes fast, but then just freeze up for like 15 seconds then work again (or sometimes it will show the wii u menu, but then have a small loading screen pop up for like 10 seconds).

I'm not sure what it is, but it could sure use some system stability updates like the 3ds

As has been mentioned repeatedly system settings is its own full blown application so has similar load times to games, but seeing as most people never go near system settings does it really matter

was there the "tilt to scroll" in the web browser before the update? Pretty neat and worked well for me last night.

Thats always been there for the gamepad but they did add support for wii remotes and if your wii remotes have motion plus it can do the same tilt scroll thing.

I'm definitely enjoying my Wii U more after the update, but I wish they would concentrate a little more on details. Things like having a more specific "Installing <Software X>..." message instead of "Preparing..." when you return to the menu after something installs in the background. Touches like that would be good.

Update took about 27 minutes for me to download. Not sure how long it took to install because I had to go out and I just left it on. I appreciate the quicker loading times for sure. I hope we get batches of new VC games weekly, but I'm sure we won't.

Either your Wii u is fucked or you have terrible time perception
Mix of both I'm sure. It's frozen more time in the past 5 months than my 360 did the first few years.

When I click on the Rayman Challenge App, for example, it hangs for a good 3-5 seconds before the picture shows up on my gamepad, where it then sits for another 3-5 seconds. The picture came up quicker before and from there I was able to proceed a little sooner if not in the same amount of time.

I've noticed a slight pause between the time when you launch an app and when the splash screen appears as well. Probably helps the perceived load times seem slower since the splash screen appears for a shorter time...

I have been getting this weird new pause after I tap Netflix. It stalls there for like five seconds doing nothing, then loads a little faster than it used to (I think) but there is no appreciable net gain due to this new pre-loading.

Anyone else experience this?

Edit: ↑ Oh, ha.

This was my biggest mistake when checking for speed after the update, i went to
"system settings" and the slow speed left a bad first impression and therefore i figured it was not a noticeable difference.

A good thing they have a button that quite literally shuts the curtains on people watching, then.

Wait wait wait, I think I just imagined context for that. I somehow understood that to mean that friends can see that you're using the browser in the friend list and what website you're visiting.

I need to sleep.

Yeah, except we having people physically timing these and getting significantly lower times so it isn't just a matter of perception

That's exactly what it means. People on your friends list can see what website your browsing.

yes, it's the only thing I do. I refuse to play any games except 'open system settings for 1up mushrooms'. It sucks but I can't afford anything else.

Update is pretty incredible.

Exiting a game takes like 4-5 seconds now. That's as fast if not faster than a PS3. Good enough for me.

Also, the Miiverse add ons are awesome too. I'm pretty pleased, all in all.

I don't know if this relates to the update or not, but my plaza screen is behaving oddly.

Notice the lack of Miis below the Monster Hunter panel. There are Miis from the MH3U community on the screen, but they're scattered all around among the other panels, in the center area, and even straggling around the edges of the screen.

Anyone else noticed this happening on their plaza?

The Miis at the edge of the screen are usually Miis you are following. Are the other MH3U Miis that you see under other panels your friends? They tend to move around.

Aw, how can you guys look at porn on your Wii Us anyway? I feel like Shiggy and Iwata would know somehow, and be disappointed.

I have 3 Wii U friends (one of which isn't on the Plaza because they've never posted on Miiverse) and one person I'm following. So that's only 3 Miis plus my own that should wander around. The others are from the MH3U community and are just scattered all over the plaza. The only correlation seems to be that my "Been playing:" game is MH3U and that's the tile whose members aren't going where they belong. They don't even go there on bootup, it's just empty underneath from the start.
