What makes the KRRKK sound? Did Herc's hand shatter or was it Superman's jaw? Why are both of them unaffected by it in the next frame?

It won't do well in the US. It'll scrape to true break even internationally though, and I expect it to do okay in home ent - ultimately that female demographic that goes for musclebound fantasy still exists and their purchases are holding up better than other bits of the market.
 
Will do well in Europe I think. The reception of the trailer was a lot better than the lukewarm reception of GotG trailer when I went to planet of the Apes last week.
 
The whole point of this particular take on Hercules is that it's based on a comic where there are no mythical elements. It's a 'grounded' take on the material.

Talk was that the studio(s) didn't like this 'realistic' take on Hercules and demanded reshoots (IRIC) adding in fantastical monsters and such for him to fight. I remember hearing (or reading, I forget) that the new 'monster fight' sequences are just cut and paste into the film.

The fact that this will get beaten on it's opening weekend by that

ScarJo actioner is pretty eye opening..., on paper at least.

It's not like Faster, Planet 51, Snitch, or Pain & Gain set the world on fire. Empire State didn't even hit theaters. G.I. Joe was already established and considering the fuckery with that film (adding more Channing for the $$), it probably should've done better. Journey 2 was a sequel that did marginally better but the first reviewed well and journey 2 was rated significantly worse.

The Rock is a charming guy, incredibly likable and a good actor but I don't think he's a the leading man people think he is. His films do best when they're already established or have additional star power in them.

Yep. I understand why people want him to be a big action star, but he can't really open a movie on his own. The most recent tracking I've seen has this only making ~$20 million or so opening weekend.

I'm also expecting his next film as lead, San Andreas, to be one of 2015's biggest flops.
 
Reviews at least. I'm Hercules, I'm Hercules.
Hercules is unabashedly a B-movie, with its faintly camp tone appearing to hark back to the Italian Hercules movies from the 1950s onwards, which starred such muscle-bound legends as Steve Reeves, Alan Steel and Lou Ferrigno. Some cinemagoers might find all this a bit quaint, but the sense of fun, plus an always-charismatic Dwayne Johnson screaming from beneath his lion hat, makes Hercules well worth the price of a cinema ticket.

He is Hercules: hear him roar. Pec-oil supplies plummet as the great muscly hero of classical antiquity arrives on the big screen, played by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, in glistening semi-nudity. Brett Ratner's cheerfully ridiculous and entertaining film begins by saying that he is "the son of Zeus – the Zeus!" That's in case there's any confusion and someone blunders up to our hero mid-battle, and says how much they enjoyed his dad's masterpiece The Cat in the Hat. 3/5

Part of the problem is that this Hercules wants to have its cake and eat it. Presenting the "real" story behind the legend is all well and good, but the film also portrays the hero grappling with CGI beasties as he undertakes his labours. As the movie progresses, there are vague allusions towards Hercules's status as the son of Zeus, however all this seems to be an arbitrary nod towards audience expectations. 2/5

The big man even gets to make an Agincourt-style speech and to show his mastery of war craft. There is some nifty archery by the Amazonian Atalanta (Ingrid Bolso Berdal).

The action is underpinned by plenty of martial music, heavy on the drum rolls. One secret Rattner refuses to divulge is whether this is a full-on spoof or whether he is actually making the film in deadly earnest.

Whatever the case, itÂ’s all good, idiotic matinee entertainment.

The realistic tone is handled well, but Johnson appears miscast. He is a nice guy and is fine in parts that employ his humour but here, the brooding calls for better acting chops.

And after the umpteenth flashback to his haunted past, the audience might hanker for a more old- fashioned, less angst-ridden hero. 2 1/2 / 5

Yea. The numbers that movie does will prove that the Rock is mortal after-all. I just don't see any interest in it and it doesn't really look all that good. I know I'm passing on it.

It's not a big budget movie like Edge of Tomorrow was and they're not heavily marketing it, but The Rock's in it, so it'll do well. He's pretty bankable.

Like other people said, nah. It did about as well as Tom Cruise sci-fi does in the US (not well), but worldwide it did alright. I'd put it on the same keel of Pacific Rim in terms of the money it made, I think. It doesn't matter though because Edge was phenomenal either way.

And yeah, I'd put even money on this breaking even worldwide, people.
 
Quite certain this will bomb.

I remember being curious about it last year, but all I got was trailers for that other cheap Hercules movie that came out this year.

The trailer seemed really boring as well, it's the same old stuff all over again (hydras etc). The lion hat looked really dumb as well.

While Angeline Jolie still has the star power to carry a movie the Rock does not....not in europe anyway.

Edit: I'd rather watch Disney's Hercules again.

That's not enough to make its money back, especially when marketing is taken into account.
 
Of a 110 million budget for Hercules. 200 million is not enough to break even?

So now movies need to make back what? Triple?

2.5 not 2? Hmmm. Well, I still think Hercules can do!

A movie has to make a MINIMUM of 2.5 times its budget to be successful. There's advertising, marketing and distribution, which these days can cost upwards of $100 million. (Star Trek Into Darkness had a reported marketing budget of $125 million.)

Overseas markets return only a fraction of what the North American box office does. In some places it's as little as 20-25%. So when you see "made $100 million foreign" you should automatically cut that in half.

That's basically the part I got wrong. I didn't realize this. It's not 1-1 to U.S. dollars.

I was wondering what was going on with that. I remember when the movie was first announced, there was no mythical elements to it. So when I watch the trailers and see the Nemean Lion, Cerberus, the hydra and some giant boar, I was wondering if I had misread.
 
I had no idea this was coming out, so... yeah. It had some decent build-up back when filming first started; must have turned out terrible
