Seeing the reaction on this forum to Windows 8 has led me to believe that it is incredibly divisive. Constant back and forth arguing in these threads.
I'm not planning on upgrade not because I think Windows 8 is bad, but because 7 is perfectly adequate and I can't be bothered.
I'm most worried what happens if Windows 8 is a success sales wise and the built in app store really takes off.
In a few years when MS has a very successful app store that the overwhelming majority of users use, will they really have that much incentive to include legacy start menu in Windows 9? And then you will have your true tablet OS on a desktop and a true closed platform.
Is this not a valid concern?

I'm sure devs would love doubling up on interface development. Would have been a sure fire application market hit.
if windows 8 doesn't take off, and Apple's way of doing things continues to take off, won't this happen anyway?I'm most worried what happens if Windows 8 is a success sales wise and the built in app store really takes off.

Should the new stuff—Metro—take off, you can expect Microsoft to drop the desktop like it's suffering from leprosy. In fact, I’m pretty sure the only reason Windows RT—the ARM-based Windows 8 version that will only be preinstalled on a handful of machines from a tiny number of hardware makers—exists is to make this future vision a reality.
It is. Paul Thurrott even says so in a recent arcticle:

Damn Valve fanboys, they're everywhere!

if customers want that model, it will come to pass... whether windows 8 succeeds or not.
I think my only big issue will be that, unless 8 has controller support, I won't be able to start up in desktop, so whenever I go make a "steambox" with BPM I'll still have use kbm to get to the desktop. Sounds like it's not much of a problem, but I would like complete controller support without the need of using kbm when I start and shut it off.
nothing. Now it coming to pass is more inevitable than ever. MS and Apple's business models will get closer and closer until we can't vote with our wallets anymore.
What oh what will happen to my steam games.

You're doing it wrong if you jump right away on a new release of Windows. :/
I wouldn't trust Paul Thurott. Microsoft makes a lot of money off of legacy support. A LOT.
With Windows 8, you get all the good stuff from the past, served with a heaping helping of both new and better. And I think you’re going to love it.
nothing.
Driver support blows for Windows 8 right now.. its not even out yet, give it 2-3 months and then run benchmarks.
I hope you're right. A lot can happen in 10+ years and I worry about them.
EDIT: Metro also adds security features that desktop does not offer.
All my games have run better on win8 so far. Not sure why.
Fruit Ninja's pretty sweet.
The amount of willful ignorance in every single Windows 8 thread is depressing. I think I'll stop clicking on them.
Yeah, it's much better to pay 66% more later on.
Defensive much? Get over it, alot of people aren't going to bother with this. You can't sell me on 'Oh its snappy', I'm on a 256GB SSD, there isn't a single thing thats slow on my machine to begin with. You guys are becoming a bit annoying gang jumping anyone who refuses to worship W8. Especially since nearly all of us are deciding to stay with Win7... Like what are you even accusing people of here? Being fanboys? But of what? Windows? Its not like we are screaming "OH BOY, WIN8 LOOKS TERRIBLE TIME TO BUY A MAC".
If anything, stuff like this just shows me that I wont be missing anything game performance wise. Just pile that on the list of reasons that its not worth bothering with.
How do you disable metro? Haven't tried the RTM but I tried one of the earlier previews and I don't think it was possible then, metro was one of my main dislikes. May be tempted to give Windows 8 a try again if it can be turned off.Not bad. I am still enjoying Windows 8 much faster boot times and all round snappier OS. Makes it hard going back to Windows 7 whilst at work.
Of course disabled metro by default so I never ever have to see it. I do not even know how to activate it again even if I wanted too ha

I have to assume all of you guys are trolling... Or just know absolutely nothing.
I've noticed this happening a lot on gaming side windows 8 threads, people get a little to defensive over it. It just isn't appealing to a lot of people.
"Hey, guys. It's really cheap right now, so you know it's going to be reallllllly good!"
Said no one.
It's like W7 is your first OS you worked with, kid. Chill out.
but RT has the desktop and comes preinstalled with desktop versions of Office. also, i'd be surprised if they only sell a handful of the RT versions of Surface. we'll see what pricing is like.
the problem with RT isn't that it doesn't have a desktop (because it does) it's that desktop software can only be bought through the official store over in Metro land. i'm sure microsoft would love this, yes, but again the failing of Windows 8 isn't going to stop this happening if consumers continue to not give a shit about it, and Apple continue to eat more and more of the market as a result.
About that...He's the thing. The desktop in RT is 100% pointless. Microsoft will not accept direct downloads of desktop apps for RT in the store. The desktop only exists because they haven't got Office running on Metro yet. Once they have, I would expect an update for RT which replaces Office with the Metro version and removes the desktop wholesale. I am concerned that if this transition succeeds, the desktop will be phased out in Windows 9, rendering every major digital distributor bankrupt.
Gamers don't enjoy a snappier OS?
For that matter XP and work perfectly fine too. If you don't upgrade until an OS is broken, why are you using 7 now?
Haha, thanks to this thread, I finally decided to try out the RC for Windows 8.
I'll post my opinion after actually checking out the OS.![]()
And during that time you didn't find the desktop?
Windows 8 isn't some new magical platform, it's still very much based on Windows 7 core standards except it has WDDM 1.2 support. Drivers will improve at the same rate as Windows 7 drivers still are, doubt you'll see any major performance increases. Drivers just suck because they are still working with new-feature kinks.
Don't worry, many of us were deeply concerned about Windows 8 and what it represents even before those people voiced their opinion.Did gaf drink the gaben and notch koolaid? Doubt win8 will be all that bad.
