Wonder Boy: Dragons Trap Reveal Trailer! ("consoles"/PC)

I can't speak for NA but the previous games were fairly commonplace down here in Australia and I assume the same was true of the Sega strongholds in Europe as well.

I never heard about this series until like 5 years ago. I feel like it was popular everywhere but the USA.

You guys are probably right. I just figured that since MW4 is a cute action title targeting all ages they might have been worried about young boys not wanting it.

If it was a different company I'd probably think the same thing. Sega never really seemed to care and they released Phantasy Star 1 at a premium price with an blatantly female lead right on the cover.

If anything they were progressive, if not they just wanted to put out good games.

That wouldn't really be an issue though, they could just put Wonder Boy back in if it was. They used to do far more than that to some games, Such as with Decap Attack, and Alex Kidd in High-Tech World.

Yeah some of the localizations back then were pretty extreme. I could tell some of them were reworks like Last Battle was obviously a Fist of the North Star game, but Black Belt, I honestly couldn't tell was a rework of the same series.

My favorite part of Monster World threads is seeing people talk through the series's insane history.

But then I'm the kind of weirdo who refers to Jedi Academy as Dark Forces 4: Jedi Knight 3: Jedi Outcast 2: Jedi Academy.

Yeah it's nuts. I think Wonder Boy 3 even had the wrong name on the cart. Iirc it said "Super Wonderboy: Super Monster land" although that might have been the previous game.

Yeah, it's not like WB/MW hadn't already been reskinned a hundred times by then.

I think the developers said it didn't come over because Sega of America/Europe had already shifted gears to the Saturn or something, which makes some sense.

The MW4 localisation is definitely new, I spoke to one of the producers who did the translation.

Yeah I figured with it being late gen that was likely the case.

Thanks for the clarification, IIRC the translation originally showed up on the Japan only PS2 collection so I either made an incorrect assumption or read something incorrect years back.

Also in NA the series is largely unknown, the SMS was very unpopular and the Genesis audience here didn't seem to go for games like this.

If I can play this in my bed on the Vita, I will feel like I'm 10yo again.... ;_;

Bring me a collector edition, an artbook, a CD soundtrack, and take my money.

Yeah, that was Monster Land, the first US run had the title "Super Wonder Boy Super Monster Land". Probably due to the Japanese version being called "Super Wonder Boy in Monster World".

In Japan the original Wonder Boy was ported to the SG-1000, and not long after the Mark III. As both were compatible with the Mark III the Mark III version was called Super Wonder Boy to differentiate them.

Okay, I concede, it really is complicated!

Holy shit. Was just thinking of the original a few days ago while missing my old game gear collection. Perfect timing. Looks incredible!

Man, for me this is already the year of dreams 2. Dragon's Trap SMS was my first game ;_;

Two wonder boy games coming up... I have no words.

Wow this looks great, both this and Monster Boy look so damn fun, can't believe we're getting two of these style of games this close together.

Edit: Lol, I like how the Monster Boy and the Dragon's Trap remake trailers both feature the same song.

Edit #2: I also can't get over the art, it looks so nice, looks like the awesome illustrations you'd see in an instruction manual, super excited for this.

Excited to finally get to play this game. Heard amazing things about it for years but never had a good way to get my hands on it. The game not being in that Monster World digital collection a couple years ago was a big disappointment but this announcement more than makes up for it.

The MS version is on the Wii virtual console for 5 bucks.

Holy shit the visuals are impressive. Pretty much Ubi-art quality. O_o A cartoon come to life.

With this and Monster Boy... damn, that's all very unexpected.

I like the look of this one (Wonder Boy: Dragons Trap)

and

I like the look of the other one (Monster Boy: Cursed Kingdom)

I like them both!!

(Monster World rules!!!)
I agree with this post.

The visuals are more palatable to me than Monster Boy for sure.

Looking forward to Side Crawler's Dance.

The game looks colourful and beautiful with an incredible art style but what's more impressive is that they secured the name. Can't believe they managed to licence it from Sega whilst Monster Boy didn't. That's one advantage this project has over Monster Boy. Both deserve to carry the name IMO.

Also of note is that the series' creator is working on this project too as well a Monster Boy. The guy gets around! So Westone is kind of involved with both or at least the series creator is.

Hopefully Vita is included in "consoles"!

If I can play this in my bed on the Vita, I will feel like I'm 10yo again.... ;_;

Bring me a collector edition, an artbook, a CD soundtrack, and take my money.

Holy shit does this look nice. Please come to the Vita...

YES PLEASE!

Also, I think it's quite funny and awesome we're getting two Wonder Boy-style games nearly simultaneously. It seems like this series is destined to always have confusing (semi)sequels :)

Monster Boy is still 2016 and it'd amazing if this is too! The screenshots make out that the game is quite far along. I know Bock/Omar has been labouring away at this for what feels like forever so wouldn't be surprised if the game is set for this year.

Two new Wonderboy games in the same year. Be still my beating heart.

Really? Guess I must have checked out of the VC by the time SMS was added or maybe I hadn't even heard of the game back then.

Either or, thanks for the heads up. Bit less tempting to go for it now that there is this remake on the horizon but I may give the original a shot at some point in the future.

The work which went into it is impressive, but...

I hate it. I said much the same thing in the Monster Boy thread- this doesn't look or sound like a Sega/Westone game anymore.

It's a shame for me, because it really is one of my all-time favourites, but at least one of the best (maybe even first to fully nail the formula) Metroidvanias will now find its way into the hands of more gamers out there.

I wonder if some of the secrets will be the same, like where to find the
Hades armor with birdman.

Will definitely buy this. Need to hear more of the music.

Folks may remember that back in the day when I was doing PS3 themes, I got on a 'video game HD remix' art kick. Part of the reason for that was we were making official themes for Sega at the time, and during one meeting with them at E3 (in 2011 iirc ) they asked us about ideas for reimagining some older properties of theirs. We had discussed an HD remix of Guardian Heroes (which they outsourced and kind of phoned in, but they let us do promo art for which was cool) and Shining Force (we pitched a fully painted art style for that one using something like the original engine). They liked those ideas enough that they proposed we do some concept art for projects of theirs. One of those was WonderBoy (I think #1)

God, why did you have to remind me of this. I'm dying. :(

I've seen that image a couple times before. Every time, I imagine how tired my jaw would have to get to make that a reality. I guess if this and Shenmue are happening, I can dream that Sega will remember that Shining isn't an ecchi series.

I did some art extraction for Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap a while ago on The Video Game Art Archive!
