Wonder Boy: Dragons Trap Reveal Trailer! ("consoles"/PC)

Ah, so we're getting this as well as Monster Boy? Fantastic. While I prefer how Monster Boy looks by a margin, this also looks good and the more the merrier

Right, Nishizawa-san?

(Almost Double Post)

Also, is it me, or do those water color pictures have an art style similar to Calvin and Hobbes?

My wife absolutely loves Wonder Boy 1 (arcade/Sega Master System version)

Is this game or Monster Boy that are releasing anything like Wonder Boy 1 / Adventure Island?

It's the same series but while Hudson continued making games like that in the Adventure Island series, Westone went a different direction and made awesome action RPGs instead. If I were to classify it, I would say it's more of a Metroidvania than it is like Adventure Island.

No, they're action/adventure games with RPG elements. The Shantae series is a good modern comparison, if you've played or are familiar with those games.

Was anyone else thinking of the Tenacious D song Wonderboy?

Because that's what I thought it was until I read the OP and did some research.

Sounds like fans have been clamoring for this for awhile, so I'm happy for them.

I want a Tenacious D Wonderboy game. Play as RageKage with Mindbullet powers or Wonderboy with sweet dragon cockles slicing action.

Not really feeling it tbqh. Dragon's Trap is by far my favourite Master System game but I don't really like the art style. I would have preferred a hi-res pixel art style, oh well I'll still get it though.

Also the series should really have just been named Monster World from the beginning to avoid all the confusion with the original Wonder Boy series.

Wow, that art style looks fantastic. It looks like it's from an actual cartoon.

Ah right. That's a shame. This might be something I like though.

Haven't played the Shantae games but might check them out.

I LOVED this game when I was a kid but I gotta say, the music was one of the most appealing aspects of it and judging from the trailer, that doesn't sound nearly as good to me.

This is pretty weird. The only thing called Wonder Boy from my childhood is a blond caveman sidescroller arcade machine where you have a skateboard and throw stone axes?!

The Zelda medieval wonder boy seems to be much better known though.

Quite a departure from the 1980 anime style of the originals, but while I'd prefer something in that style this does look gorgeous.

Both this and monsterboy

This is legitimately one of my favorite games of all time. Bar none.

I still hear the music to the beginning after clearing the initial castle. I still hear the door opening noise, and I can hear the fanfare that plays when you get keys. The sounds in this game are amazing. Nostalgic kick in the ass to see this today.

I have no idea if they kept the pieces or if it subsequently influenced any of the direction they decided to go in (I don't believe it's even the same game, and I don't know how much influence Sega even had with choosing the presentation at this point), but I can't help but still feel a bit vindicated because it's the perfect art style for this game. :D
Sega didn't have anything to do with this remake. It's all an initiative of Omar Cornut, who began this as some sort of "on the side fan project" (he has been working on it on and off for like 5 years now I've been told), later teaming up with 2D artist Ben Fiquet who he worked with on Soul Bubbles.
He asked Westone for the rights to use the Wonder Boy name, and I'm not even sure Sega has something to say on the matter. ^^

The video reminded me I never played MW IV and it looks awesome...
What's the best official way to play it ?

I have a PS4, PS3, WiiU, Wii, 3DS, DS, Vita...

The PS3 version is a perfect port made by the kings of perfect emulation M2, so I would go with that one.

One of my two favorite SMS games, the other being Phatasy Star. I've probably played it end to end a few dozen times. I'm so happy right now.

The pics made the art style look a bit off, but in motion, it's gorgeous. Really beautiful. This is pretty deep into "so happy I might start crying" territory.

I just wanna go into the desert and dive into the lava as Dragon-Man and score some early scale armor for my other forms right about now.

When it says "PC" it means "x86-(64)" compatible personal computer running Windows (or maybe even a Linux), not the "PC-Engine"?

I was the only kid in my circle of friends with a SMS rather than an NES, so I never got to really talk with anyone else who played the game, when I was younger. Gotta say, it's really heartwarming to see so many people remembering it fondly. I love the game so much.

Legendary game.
Also the only one with a master system whilst everyone else was rocking a NES!
It is the first game that pops into my mind when someone brings up the master system.
The best 8-bit adventure/platformer bar none!

Ah if only. This on a PC Engine Controller would be bliss!

This just leapt to #1 on my most anticipated list. Animation just looks buttery smooth and the sound effects are giving me such a nostalgia overload.

Looks like a top notch remake. Day 1 without a shadow of a doubt.

I know that feel, man.

No single friend of mine in my childhood had a Master System.

I really, really feel lucky. My father gifted my brother and me a Master System with Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap when we were 3 and 5 years old.

Yeah, this was the first game we ever played. So, so lucky.

Sega does still own the trademark for several WM/MW titles and characters including the name "Wonder Boy"; that's the whole reason Westone changed the name when they ported/licensed the game to other platforms back in the day, and it's why Monster Boy is called Monster Boy and not Wonder Boy or Monster World.

Westone went bankrupt a couple years ago, some unknown holding corporation owns the IP now.

If you have a US PSN account you can get the Sega Vintage Monster World collection for $5 for the next few days, it includes Wonder Boy in Monster Land (arcade), Wonder Boy in Monster World (Genesis/Mega Drive) plus MW4--in other words, every MW game except Dragon's Trap.

Dope. I think I played the original SMS game a bit back in the day, but I didn't own the console so not a lot in the end.

Oh my sweet jesus, this is amazing. This game and Alex Kidd are my earliest memories of gaming, definitely picking this up day one!

I was wondering why the name Omar Cornut was so familiar, and then I realized that I bought an adapter to use PAL carts on a JPN Master System from him years ago.

Dragon's Trap is my top most favoritest game ever so this is great news. It looks great; a lot noisier than the clean Master System look, but I think it matches the manual art pretty well. It's just a shame they didn't drop the Wonder Boy name.
