WWDC09 Thread of iPhones and Snow Leopards

Heh, I don't remember tinkering with my Safari settings via the terminal, so I take it that Apple went back to the tabs below the address bar in Safari 4?

Can I troll please :)

Maybe it's a US thing but why are people still excited for 3mp camera? No flash. I have a n95-8gb it has a 5mp w/flash and my contract is almost up so I've had it for 2 years. Sony just announced a 12mp camera iirc

Video again something I already have but nice feature for iphone (no excuse not to have it from begining imo).

Voice controll in my past experience dont work but can't comment on this one because I haven't tried it, plus you'll look like a right knob doing it in public. I don't get it, if it's in your fucking hand press the button (in this case screen). In car, hands free, fair game but you still need to hold button down so by the time you do that you can do what you need without it.

Also multitasking, expected after pre they'd introduce that. Oh well.

But after all that, I'm buying one and can't wait! :D :lol I'll go for 8gb one £30 a month. I am shocked though some of you guys spend $90 per month! Wow.

MP is rather useless in the long run, what it comes down to is the lens. Something they always cheap out on with Nokia, Samsung, Sony Ericsson etc. While the iPhone had a 2MP camera its lens was phenonomal. It took great pictures under the right condition but without autofocus it sucked. Thats what they are correcting

I gotta say the speed improvements are pretty impressive. It's been the only real complaint I've had with my iPod Touch. The speed, particularly rendering web pages, can be awfully slow.
This is one of those awesome speed bumps instead of a meh speed bump.

Yay, i am SOOO going to replace my iPhone OG, awesome.

Same here. I knew 3.0 wasn't going to bring MMS and I have been dying to upgrade to the 3G. I knew it was best to hold out though. I don't think my rate plan should take much of a hit either. The iPhone OG doesn't qualify for any rate-discounts because of the $10/month Apple gets from AT&T. The 3G does allow discounts, and I can get one for being a state worker. I'm wagering that 3Gs plan with a state discount will be about as much as the OG rate plan.

Do it. I am. The Pre hardware is cheap feeling and I can't get over it, aside from the light leakage and heating. The 3GS is going to be 3x faster so it'll open apps and browse faster than the Pre. There's no contest anymore, it's like Dreamcast vs. Ps2...looked good while it was the newer model, came out at an awkward inbetween time and is now already behind.
Werent you one of the biggest pre advocates too? Or was that someone else?

3GS feels like a minor update to me. OS 3.0 seems like a much bigger upgrade than 3GS and since that's available to 3G owners, I can easily wait till the end of my contract in 2010 when they will likely update the phone again. The only thing I really am missing out of 3GS is the voice command. All I want is a voice dialer and I'm pretty set so it's a shame that Apple won't include at least that in the 3G. I refuse to believe there's a good reason why they won't do it. If Apple really wanted to entice me on a 3GS, they should have made more features from 3.0 exclusive to it. Thankfully they didn't.

Looking at iPhone 3GS' main page:

The top features they are highlighting are:
-2X Speed (Good)
-Video Camera (Good, kinda)
-Voice Controls (Good, kinda)
-Compass (Meh)
-Spotlight Search (also found on other iPhones with 3.0)
-MMS (also found on other iPhones with 3.0)

Pretty sad.

Sidenote: I'm not an Apple basher. I love my 3G.

I was super into the Pre but not sure if I'm who you're thinking of. But even so, yeah, and I just want the best phone. All of these improvements may not be a big deal to current 3G owners who the iPhone already won over, but they're fixes to literally all of my complaints. Sideways keyboard, notifcations, faster performance all around, better battery, better camera, this reads like the list of reasons I didn't want the iPhone, and it's now the list of reasons the iPhone has finally won me over.

Certainly not earthshattering, but given that I managed to hold off, I've got to imagine the folks that bought into the iPhone over the past 3-4 months feel like crap.

Hardware
3.0 Megapixel camera – with autofocus & video capture!!
Up to 2x as fast as previous 3G iPhone
Voice Control (make calls, interact w/ apps)
Better Battery Life
Built in Digital Compass
Support for Nike+ running accessory
Hardware Encryption of Data

8GB went from $199 -> $99
16GB went from $299 -> $199 with all those features above
and a new 32GB phone for the same price as the 16GB.

Not ultracompelling for an upgrade, but a no brainer for those that were interested, but have held off for the new announcement or a cheaper price.

I'm looking at the store... did they really just take the aluminum Macbook and call it a Pro? The 13inch Macbook "Pro" doesn't seem any different. Talk about a product reshuffle made to look like a refresh.

Yeah, the hardware updates were underwhelming. Even the battery life improvements were pretty insignificant. Likely just going to stick with the 3G.

I'm going to check to see when my contract ends with Vodafone(been with 'em for years), then I'm hopefully going to buy an iPhone next week.

When you're in the purchase flow it will tell you on the 2nd screen when you see the prices that AT&T is going to sell it to you for. If its not giving it to you cheap it will have in parens when you can get it for the cheaper price.

Sweet, I qualify for the upgrade :D Think I'll be picking up a 3G.

got the new safari (had to download it, didnt show up in software update)

has a nice new 'loading' thing that appears in the right of the address bar

but the tabs have gone back to how they used to be D: got to find a way to put them back on top, i loved that.

and gifs not fixed of course.

Will be picking up a 16gb iphone - can't wait and just in time before I go on vacation.

Also the Snow Leopard upgrade is nice and I'll probably grab that in September.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK

I was expecting a bit more than an incremental update, an OLED screen would definitely have sold me on an IPhone, finally.
Oh well, next year it is then!

quick opinion from you guys, do you think its worth it to pay about 100-150 to upgrade from the original 2.0ghz unibody MB to the new 1200$ MBP?

MBP tag
SD card
.2something cpu upgrade
better screen...

iPhone 3GiS

Reminds me very much of DSLite --> DSi

I take lots of photos and videos, so I kinda want the slight upgrade.
Bit disappointed, but that's ok.

2010, iPhone Oled. Believe.

That's what I'm thinking. And that's why I'm more than willing to wait for that one. My 3G is still awesome. The additional battery life afforded by OLED will be huge.

The new Macbook Pros though are begging for me to buy them though.

Meh maybe I won't be lining up on Friday after all. I don't qualify for a full upgrade until December so until then they want to rape me to the tune of $500 for the 32gb model. No deal!

wow I'm so glad that they didn't make huge improvements on this new iPhone, I would have been so pissed. Nothing great at all, I was actually thinking about replacing my 3G too, if the new iPhone was going to step it up. Those upgrade prices are insane. Highly disappointing on the iPhone news.

Just ordered my 3GS 32GB on the Apple Store. Took some fighting but you can get it with free shipping for delivery on the 19th. Not too shabby!

I've got a question, is there any chance they'll have the new ipod touches out before the get a free 8gb touch with purchase of mac computer ends?
Doubt it, I thought that was how they usually got rid of their spare ones?

It depends on what you want... It has the better built in battery which I like (some dont). Has the backlight keyboard which is cool, sd card is something I really wanted, etc... It's really up to you if you want those extras. I do so I'm getting the new one.

What does this mean?
It's a Bolt On -- so in addition to your standard contract price.

That is, if you want to use Tethering.

Tethering is a great feature but it has never been cheap. :P The networks hate it.

They added the Backlit keyboard (best feature ever, I miss it so much going from PowerBook to MacBook last year), FireWire 800, SD Card slot.

whoa whoa whoa, the 13" has built in battery? i dont think so...really? not sure anymore. but lets say i do want those, 150$ upgrade price isnt so bad right?

edit: oh god it is built in. is the ram/hd still easy to upgrade?

it looks really fast in that guided tour
im kind of skeptical

I'll probably head over to the apple store once the 3GS phones drop to pick mine up (most likely I'll check out the San Francisco store...and probably wait in line after work).

That white 16gb 3GS phone looks great...and I'll probably pick up that MGS4 air jacket for it as well. :lol

Wait, there is now only one MacBook?

What in the fuck? Apple's best selling computer and they do a big shit on it. :lol

Didn't they just upgrade it to a Macbook Pro 13" model? Sounds like they improved it to me.

Just a heads up for those that upgraded early with the iPhone 3G. You are probably not yet clear of your upgrade window (mine is 7/18/2009) according to the site. Before then the prices are":

$299 8GB
$399 16GB GS
$499 32GB GS
Same goes for me except for the date: 12/18/2009.

And 3G was my first iPhone (not first AT&T phone tho).
