WWDC09 Thread of iPhones and Snow Leopards

As an owner of an aluminum 13' macbook, I'm pretty pissed right about now.

So my model is $100 less now, and adds:

- higher clockspeed
- much better screen (60% more gamut, I'm assuming same as pro screens)
- LED keyboard
- firewire 800
- SD slot (this is huge for me, and shocking coming from apple)
- 7 hr battery

Yeah, this kind of sucks for me.

I just bought a 15" MBP two months ago. Waited until after MacWorld like I was supposed to, MacRumors' buyers guide said I was good, and I figured I was okay because they NEVER update hardware at WWDC, right? Sigh.

Exactly. My pre cost 199 and i am pretty much set on returning it next week in anticipation for a Iphone that has the same memory, more apps, more features and 100 dollars cheaper. I really really wanted the pre to be awesome too. I still like the OS design and lay out better though, but not enough to keep me from moving.
How're you going to return it? You've signed a 2 yr contract, what's the cost of breaking it? A few hundred bucks? How would returning the phone even work? Honestly curious.

The screens are also LED backlit.

Ebay/craigslist it pronto if you care enough. Plenty of people won't find out about these updates for a while.

Pretty sure All Core 2 Duo support 64 bit.

Awesome. It's really crazy that my iMac is almost 3 years old and right now with Leopard it still runs GREAT, and Snow Leopard sounds like it will make it even snappier and nicer to use. Maybe I'll never need to get a new computer, ha.

Wait, wait... an iPhone for 99 bucks? Holy shit.

I can finally upgrade from the first Motorola Razr that I've been using for like 5 years now. :lol

EWW. New Safari 4 release sucks. They killed top-tabs! I loved the top-tabs!

But it'll be at least 70 bucks a month for your contract...

edit: beaten, lol

Sprint used to give you 14 days to return the phone and cancel the contract.

nah man. top tabs was an experiment that thankfully died. i've been talking about it in the safari 4 thread.

it caused too many issues screwing up the functionality of the title bar.

Top tabs were horrific. I couldn't double click to make a new tab and accidental double clicks on the tabs minimized the window.

first of all fuck att

second of all im gonna ditch my 3g and get the 3gs. cant pass up on the camera and speed

anyone has any questions feel free to ask, i think i got most of the info down pat now.

gonna end up paying 399 for it..fucking att again

wouldn't it be cheaper to cancel and sign a new contract? (175+200)

Top tabs are best, but the way Safari beta did it was terrible. Chrome has the right idea.

I don't mind tabs back at the bottom, but I hate how they're going all the way down and cutting off right at the bottom. It looks awful with the rounded corner and it slamming right into the bottom border.

Pro-quality screen (the old MacBook screens were fucking awful), backlit keyboard, SD card slot, Firewire port, 7 hour battery, 8 GB of RAM possible.

I see, not bad. Better pricing too, particularly with the Air.

No kidding -- you KNOW they're pissed Palm didn't get that out at least 2 weeks before this then. :lol The rumored early May date sure is looking like it would have been a winner right now.

Same. New bottom tabs look worse than Safari 3's. Bring back the top tabs and just fix what was wrong with them.

Also, smooth scrolling is showing way more frames of animation for me.

that would mean changing them entirely to make them like chrome. they probably didn't want to do that. it's not a simple fix. it's a complete rewrite of the UI

agreed that the new safari 4 tabs look a bit odd with the rounded corners. but I can live with a small aesthetic downgrade over 3.0 now that the top tab UI issues are gone.

How do you double click to make a new tab?

New Safari 4 release is awesome! Top-tabs are dead! Loading bar is semi-useful again!
How is the new safari loading bar that different from the beta version? I still kinda miss the blue bar that goes across, although that does seem a bit old-fashioned.

There's just a dark blue badge that says "Loading" next to the teeny tiny load indicator. All loading is still indeterminate.

1. double click in the tab bar space. or click the new + button.

2. in the beta, the loading web page only showed the spinner and there was no visible stop button. the only way to show a stop button was to hover the mouse over the spinner to see it appear. now, the stop button is clearly a button in the address bar and it's not as confusing for a new user to figure out how to stop loading a page.

unrelated, but still nice, the FW 800 port has returned to the 13" MBP! now all mac portables have firewire again. Huzzah!

oh and heres why att sucks

We were just told the real reason why AT&T won’t be supporting MMS on the iPhone 3G or iPhone 3G S at launch, and you’re going to laugh… Technically it will work right away our ninja tells us. The are no extra plans or higher fees we’ve just learned (the unlimited $20 package covers unlimited SMS and MMS), and the reason it’s not good to go right away is because AT&T has to manually remove all the “Opt Out MMS codes” on each account. Basically, if we were to summarize this, and we’re going out a little bit of a limb, remove the Opt Out MMS code, and MMS will work with the final OS 3.0 build right away. Who wants to try it with the GM 3.0 build just released?

We’ve also just heard that tethering will be 100% locked out at launch, but AT&T’s in the process of putting together a $70/mo unlimited data and tethering plan. SMS and MMS will not be included in that plan, we’re told.

For those of us with an iphone 3G with 02 here in the UK, would it be possible to buy an iphone on its own (Pay as you go) and then just swap the current contract SIM over?

Or do 02 not allow that?

ETF is $125

Not in California. When I signed my contract for the 3G it was $175, then prorated -$5/mo for each month that has passed by. ex; If I signed in 7/1/08, and wanted a new iphone on 7/1/09, then the ETF would be $115.

Ah, sweet - never new this, as I pretty much have many tabs loaded most of the time. The coolest thing about Apple threads is learning new tricks EVERY time!

Yeah, I get this, but after the first time of figuring it out, I get it. It doesn't add any functionality for me, except for maybe knowing if a page is still dark grey loading.

SO Safari 3 tabs did look different. I like the new look. Is the close tab button on the other side now?

Oh, wow. This is a megaton. What did it lose?

quick opinion from you guys, do you think its worth it to pay about 100-150 to upgrade from the original 2.0ghz unibody MB to the new 1200$ MBP?

MBP tag
SD card
.2something cpu upgrade
better screen...
+backlit keyboard and firewire = yes

mrkgoo said:

It lost nothing, but gained a hell of alot. For $100 Cheaper.
(Clockspeed, better screen, battery, LED keyboard, SD, FW800)

well, it lost the express card slot but I think most people would prefer the SD card slot.

The war, so far as I see it, is no longer "Windows vs. Mac", but "Safari top tab" people vs. "Safari bottom tab" people. Seriously, you folks who got Apple to change the tabs back for the final 4.0 version are the true enemy so far as I'm concerned. Now I've got to go back to the shitty old way of dealing with tabs in Safari, just as I came to hate using any non-Safari browsers because of its awesome tabs.

(Seriously Apple, just make a fucking preferences option so we can have things either way. You have to be the most utterly brain-dead company in the entire universe at times.)

some people are reporting that att is letting them upgrade 1 year after they bought their 3g

i would call and make sure though

It's truly absurd. The MINIMUM you can pay is $90/month + taxes if you want unlimited texts too. The reality of that is about $100 a month after all of the taxes.

You're talking $2,400 + entry fee over the course of 2 years. For a phone? That's unreal. Absolutely unreal. I'm blown away how many people are willing to get raped by AT&T when it's offering nothing that competitors aren't for $25-30 less per month.

The competitors don't give people easy access to iTunes for movies, tv shows, and music also don't have an app like Wunder Radio that gives me easy access to hundreds of online radio stations, just for a couple of examples. Also anybody who has a blackberry with data plan are getting similarly raped and arguably less than what the iPhone offers

i feel the same way, except not as pissed. i can accept that it had to happen eventually. got a friend maybe willing to buy it for about 850 though, and i did the math, after selling ipod/printer and education discount, the new 13"mbp would only cost about 920-950. might go through with it

there is no express card slot in the unibody MB

Did the 13" MB ever have an express card slot though?

So let me get this straight, in regards to the unibody 13" MB.

It got a bump in speed. It got an SD card slot. It got a newer 60% wider gamut screen. It standardised the backlit keyboard. It got the improved battery. It got the FW800 port.

For $100 less. And an increased Student discount.

What. Amazing.

that is correct good sir. also it now allows for 8gb of ram.

does anybody have the 17" mbp? im wondering how the upgrade for HD and ram is on these without a removable battery

I don't own one but I saw pictures online of the 17" being taken apart.

you remove around 8 screws and you can pop out the hard drive and ram like on the unibody macbook pro 15" models

see here

hard drive instructions here

I heard the 60% wider gamut was also introduced into the 15" MBP. So it's probably the best display they've ever had. I HAVE to see this.
