WWDC09 Thread of iPhones and Snow Leopards

Hey, do you know how to activate the developer account ?
Does it worth spending $99 just cause I can't wait 9 days ?
Is there a way to not brick my iPhone ?

Is there anywhere I can see when will countries get the new iPhone?
That "6 more countries a week later and others in summer" part left me hungry.

Right, but for situations when you install a new hard drive?

It would probably ask you to insert the Leopard disc.

That's the way Windows upgrades always went.

It would scan your drive to see if there's a qualifying product on it already. If not, it would ask you to pop the old install disc in.

Apple are so easy with OS licences, that I doubt it would be any more sinister or difficult than that. It'll probably be easier than that. Like how the single and family licence are the same damn disc. They just trust you'll install it on the right number of computers.

My friend just told me to buy an regular 3G and not a 3GS (Ive never owned an iPhone)

He says apps can get me a video camera and more speed? Is he crazy? I thought the 3GS had a new ARM processor in it etc?

WARNING: Devs are telling us that new terms and conditions need be accepted before downloading iPhone 3.0 GM, which include a warning that applying the developer build may permanently lock your device out of the commercial 3.0 release on June 17th.
If you’re not a legit developer who needs this now, more than ever — stay away!

Uh yeah. No thanks.

your friend sounds completely uninformed.

the 3G is a fine device but the processor speed upgrade for the 3GS is very real. and there is no video coming for the 3g phone at all.

Okay.. thought so.

Anyone know hardware spec differences between both? I would love to shut his face down.. haha..

Unless you jailbreak.

Well, that shit can be removed at install.

You need to make sure to customize the install and turn off all that bloated crap. All the languages, all the fonts you won't need (Asian fonts are huge!), all the printer drivers since face it, you're never going to own every single one. Just install them as you go!

You save GIGABYTES of data by turning that off.

I hope the install of Snow Leopard saves even more not counting that stuff.

Won't know until I install it myself in September.
I've never installed MacOSX before and I just found it a little odd that the OS installation would do something like that. It seems so obvious that you would not want to install what is not needed.

Snow Leopard is really getting smaller because they were able to get rid of all the PPC code. If you use xslimmer you can get most of that space already. I just downloaded the software updates and ran it and you can see how much space it saves.

Beat.
That is nuts how much extraneous data is installed.

Apple's not telling. which means we won't know till a) the thing goes on sale and it gets ripped apart and b) hackers jailbreak it and are able to read device info from all the chips and whatnot like the previous iphones.

so you'll have to wait till the end of june to shut his face down.

So jailbreaking makes it faster?

I'm guessing some overclocking tool ?

I should have specified the video. I've never actually tried it myself so I'm not to sure of the quality on the 3G.

My original Core Duo 1.83 white macbook still sells for ~$500 on ebay. (really, I just checked). Insane.

Student discount MBP = $1100. Sell the iPod Touch and you get a final price of $900. Damn steal!

you think thats cheap? i just figured out how to get the 13" mbp for 750, and thats before selling my original unibody :O

I think the GM warning is BS.

No, jailbreaking will just allow for video capture, but it won't be nearly the quality of the new iPhone because the camera is much worse.
Usable but not that pretty.

Man I wish I could get one of those new batteries. I'd sell my unibody mbp but the prices on ebay are all over the place and I don't want to take more than a $300 hit

OS X just panders to the easiest, safest option which is to give you everything in case you need it, rather than not give it to you. My biggest bugbear on Windows was having to find my install disc every time I visited a web page with a non Western character set to install a language and it's associated fonts.

Hard drives are so big these days, you can understand why they do it. I think even Windows Vista/7 install all of their available languages now.

Thanks for all the clarification guys.

I'm excited! I'm a Blackberry Storm owner.. and I can't stand this thing in terms of apps and OS.. Though I love the e-mail. Hope Apple can keep up with the e-mail on this thing. Push was a big thing for me..

I have video on my 3G.

the video quality on the video recording app on jailbroken iphones is fine, i mean, compared to other phones anyway.

i remember back in the day, the first video recording stuff really was pretty crappy, but i've seen videos my bro recorded of himself and his friends playing basketball, and they're good enough.

you have a jailbroken app that allows you to record video. a friend of mine uploaded videos he took with that setup and it was around 15 fps.

not worth it.

IF the old iphone could record at 30 fps, then we're talking. but right now the abilities of the 3g camera are so poor that only tiny little videos can be made and it's a chore for other people to watch the footage.

Friend of mine installed the GM on his 3G iPhone and it's working fine. He's sending me screencaps and everything.

I think that warning is just BS to discourage people from installing a leaked firmware. They said the same thing last year with 2.0 and everyone was able to still install the final version.

Still not worth the risk. I can wait 9 days.

Honestly, I have no idea. Even though I have it I have never used it, just saying the functionality is there. Apparently some people (Faceless) don't think the quality is too bad.

Yeah I'm waiting too personally. Here's one of the images he sent though to prove it:

It could take over a week to get it activated.

So I reserved my 32GB iPhone for the 19th, but I haven't received an email yet. Should I call the store and double check?

That's going into every email I send from now on. :lol

If you install it and it somehow fries when the public release is out, can't you just wipe all the data and restore with the public release?

technically, this should be the public release. it's the GM.

I wonder if someone could just copy the text from the new Terms of Service that's causing this confusion.
