Xbox 360 internal HD-DVD drive *is* coming?

Ghost said:
:lol that's good irony.

How so? They are adding a internal HD DVD drive that plays movies and not games. I wasn't questioning it's playback quality one way or the other, he obviously questions Sony's online service without knowing much about it.

Black Xbox 360
250 GB HDD
Developed by Directv and Microsoft
HDMI built in
Integrated Wireless Support
Built in HD-DVD Player

Priced within $100 of the $599 PS3

HDMI was kind of inevitable, but I would be surprised if Microsoft finally put a Sony-made technology to its console

So sorry, this doesn't say anything about sony's approach, because they are still fundamentally different.

Not to the average consumer looking for an all-in-one next-gen game system/high definition video player, which is what Sony's been promising with the PS3 from day one, and which is also what MS appears to be offering here. So sorry, you're dead wrong.

"Right now it's focused purely on movie playback," Peter Moore told US site GameSpot.com. "Think of the drive as something that lets you play high-definition movies on the Xbox 360."

That's not quite as reassuring as i'd like. Less of the "right now" please, Peter. I'm not saying i think hd-dvd games might happen, but it's in MS's own interests to be absolutely unequivocal about this.

Knowing that they offer a bullet-point for bullet-point clone of live, down to the 'achievments' was the basis for that little quip. However, it was all in jest, so don't worry. :)
No... there was one missing - 'Annual subscription'.

is this clear enough for you?

Since announcing the Xbox 360 HD DVD Player accessory at E3 2006, weÂ’ve been clear that it is designed exclusively for playing HD DVD movies. It will not play games on HD DVD.

Bad move imo.

MS had the distinct price advantage and now they'll lose that and add further confusion to their product range among the myriad accessories, add-ons and SKUs.

Maybe Rockstar couldn't fit GTA4 on a DVD7 after all.

You can't claim that X360 is 399$ and below anymore. And they are trading that image for a HD-DVD player that doesn't benefit games.

When have you ever seen someone market the price as the high price and lower. Companies always market the low price and MS would say something like this when this thing releases (If it is true).

XBOX 360 starting at $199.99 (By the time this thing releases the Core will have dropped $100).

m0dus said:
Because the $300 and $400 versions will magically disappear if this thing launches :lol

I don't think so. They will maintain these versions because they have to be cheaper than the PS3. The HD-DVD-, HDMI + Overflow Powa version will just be another one for people who want to maximize the capabilities of their home console.

yeah that's better. I don't think there's any real danger of HD-DVD games. I just hope they make that message clear to everyone.

if i was really anal i'd point out that that quote only refers to the add-on and not the built-in drive

No one said that.

But which will they be marketing to consumers - all 3 SKUs?

Which will be taking up retail floorspace - all 3 SKUs?

Which will be taking up manufacturing capacity?

Are they going to triple their marketing budget or give a 1/3 to each SKU?

There is no point putting out a new SKU if you're not going to back it with full marketing dollars and maximise its retail floor space.

To that end the more expensive HD-DVD X360 SKU will be the one consumers see and hear most of thus losing their pricing advantage.

I don't know what's worse. The guy sitting across from me with the huge unibrow, or this thread.

Oops didn't notice Monkeymagic posting, yep this thread is definitely worse.

Dope, I'm going to be buying another 360 then. This one I have now is for my wife and kids in the near future

Did the PS2 automatically become $700/$800 when the PSX version was released? This is exactly the same scenario.

your posting style reminds me of someone I'd rather not be reminded of.

Seeing as Microsoft have consistently done the opposite of what they've said regarding the 360 I fully expect HD-DVD games down the road!

So they're going to advertise the HD-DVD X360 at $299? :lol

You're...you're not a person are you? You're some kind of foam brick that's gained sentience and learned to type about SKUs, aren't you? That's so weird.

big deal.

sony said will have new ps3 versions down the future. more ram hdd, dual hdmi. also BTO like Dell.

hd-dvd for games will have mutliple dvd version. ms aint yo dumb. Xbots wont support ms if they are dumb.

No one EVER advertises the highest price with all the options. MS certainly never has.

So when do consumers find out about the real price of the HD-DVD X360?

Let me guess - at the till.

Or better yet on their credit card statement.

mrklaw said:
surely all it does is validate Sony's approach in the eyes of the consumer? How can that be good?

Actually, I was thinking that this SKU will put ther other two SKUs in a better light for consumers.

"Hey, I always wanted a 360, and now I can get one for either $399 or $299 instead of $499 for that black SKU!" [this would of course only applied to people who could careless about the HD-DVD and were also clueless about how they were always $399/$299]

Monkeymagic is trying so hard to get that SDF tag. Guy/Gal's on a mission. I say don't give him the satisfaction. :lol

Someone change his tag to Microsoft Fanboy:D

The statistics coming in from Live are undeniable... (A guess I have no numbers)

Consumers want affordable multi-media machines. PCs had the opportunity but those within the sector refused to unite and lower prices.

Anyone that is truly unbiased should have seen this coming, imo...

Now I understand why I was banned from Gamespot.

he already got an avatar.

as others have noted this doesn't change microsoft's stance on things (HD-DVD should be optional) nor does it change Sony's stance on things (Bigger storage capacity is necessary for next gen) it just offers first time buyers something more elloquent than the add on IF THEY WANT TO PLAY HD DVD MOVIES.

that's it. monkeymagic slated the price of the add on (based on the direct uk to us dollar conversion). now he slates this. any piece of news regarding microsoft or sony, good or bad, he finds a way to make it a good thing for Sony.

those of us that wish that sony hadn't forced bluray onto people would have loved sony to do something similar. blu ray not for games, and a cheaper ps3 with without the blu ray drive.

now, the interesting parts here, are the direct tv bit which... is this going to be a standard direct tv box then? can you get it without direct tv etc. final price (within $100 presumably means plus or minus $100).

might they phase out the core when this happens? we'll see.

oh and we'll see if sony advertise the PS3 as $599 or less or starting at $499.

If Sony does well with PS3 i wouldn't be surprised to see Halo 3 on HD-DVD.

I bet there's a simple and logical explanation behind this, I just can't figure out what it is.

I wonder whether this has anything to do with their Zune line. Wildly speculating; they might market this new black Xbox as the Media Xbox and tie it to the Zune brand.

Or not!

The Register is claiming it to be an HD DVD Burner which surely must push the price up quite a bit further.

Uh oh

sh*tstorm alert!!!!

http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2006/09/13/ms_internal_hd_dvd_xbox_drive/

Microsoft has begun seeking manufacturing partners to make an internal HD DVD drive for a redesigned Xbox 360 console, whistle-blowers from among Taiwan's optical disk drive production community have claimed. And the software giant may be looking at incorporating disc-burning technology in the console.

It has to be said, of course, that Microsoft has yet to ship its Xbox 360-oriented external HD DVD player, and it may well have simply been looking for further manufacturing partners for the internal workings of this add-on.

But the Taiwanese source, mentioned by DigiTimes, specifically referred to that products read-only capability, and emphasis that suggests Microsoft may have a broader plan for a drive built into the console.

Certainly, the timing's good. Sony's PS3 woes - which culminated in last week's announcement that the next-generation, Blu-ray Disc-supporting console will not ship in Europe until March 2007, delayed from this coming November - gives Microsoft the opportunity to take advantage of PS3 supply limitations.

And since an external drive is always going to appear a very clumsy alternative to the PS3's integrated unit, Microsoft has to be thinking about moving quickly to an internal unit.

The sources suggest the second-generation Xbox 360 could ship during the first half of 2007. By then, Microsoft's Zune will be available, backed by a online content shop that's going to be selling movies pretty darn soon, if not from day one. Apple's announcement yesterday will be one spur.

A good proportion of movie purchasers are going to want to archive their downloads, and that means DVD±R/RW support at the very least. The tightly controlled software environment will make piracy a darn sight harder, a point that Microsoft will undoubtedly tout when pitching the Zune/Xbox 360 service to content owners. ®

uh oh what have I done....this is not going to be pretty. im posting in a famous thread!!!

Black Xbox 360
250 GB HDD
Developed by DirectTV and Microsoft
HDMI built in
Integrated Wireless Support
Built in HD-DVD Player

the thing everyone here fails to understand is this is being subsidised by DirectTV.You will not be walking into walmart and leaving with one of these unless you subscribe or already are a subsciber to their service, this is not for the masses, its for av enthusiasts. Hence the hdmi, tivo function, HD-dvd playback which you should have a HDTV for by the way. While Iam on the subject, at least 80% of PS3s will never see the benifit of BluRay movie playback so touting one of its features as HiDef movie playback is as usless as having a DirectTV tuner built in, if you are not a subscriber to their service, which as far as I know is only available in the US.

Oh and nice Troll monkeymagic

Smart. MS can lock down DRM much more effectively on a 360 than they can on a PC. Movie studios will like that. The plot thickens!

They should make the burner optional.

After all it's all about choice.

I wish your posts were optional.

Oh wait, they are.

Also, HD-DVD burner? This story sounds more and more like bullshit with each passing page of this thread.

If the Sony PS3 becomes the more popular console, and lead platform for multi-platform games, I think it will be inevitable the 360 will use the HDDVD drive for games, especially now they've stated they are building a model with an internal drive.

Yeah, if. Things are awfully hard to predict, this generation.
