Xbox One Install Times are laughably horrible.

I only buy digitally, and I have pretty good Internet so it's never usually an issue for me.

All the more reason I'm glad I abandoned disks and eyesore clutter game cases

I'm almost completely away from Discs myself. I have 80 something games and only 8 of em are disc. I only buy disc versions of games that are yearly, such as Fifa 15, most Call of Duty games, Madden etc. That way I can trade last years and get some cash towards the new one. But as far as load times are concerned, I have 120 download speeds and somewhere near 25 upload. I downloaded BLOPS 3 Beta 15gb download in 25 minutes...might have been faster even. I've got friends that I buy games with at the same time to play together and they have some crappy net and they're always jealous that my games are ready before theirs. It's sad for kids who dont make the decisions in the household or cant afford the good net. We're too far into the days of internet having huge impacts to our day to day lives to not have decent net.

Chip, or method, thats the way it works on the ps4. it cant be mimicked by the xbox one, otherwise they would have been done it.

It will be interesting if they can change it, given Sony was unable last gen to do it. MS was miles ahead with their ecosystem.

I've found game install very fast on Xbox one. I have every console and a 105Mbps internet with very good wired gigabit network and its fast faster than PS4 because it installs patches same time not after the fact like PS4. Both are pretty fast for me it isnt a huge difference but most times the complete process is quicker on the Xbox.

Wait, I thought it downloads and installs the patches first, and puts the disc installation on hold, that's why it usually takes so long for people with lower download speeds.

It's like they switched places this gen, last gen PS3 installs were fucking painful and now this gen the XBO ones are.
Either way Microsoft needs to put this very high up on the list of stuff to fix starting in January.

Totally agree. It's a really weird swap.

For PS3, I used to just set it to install and leave.

This gen, it's reversed.

WOW

Seriously? My PS4 is ready to go in seconds. Longest install I had was GTA and it was done by the time I added the filling to my bagel and got some juice. 10-15 minutes has to be a joke. Anything longer than a minute and I'd think my PS4 was broken.

I'm honestly shocked that 10-15 minutes is something you find acceptable. In contrast I don't think any game I've played on the PS4 has taken longer than 2 minutes and that's even with updates. I use an ISP here called virgin media and my speed is 40-50 and I have the connection hard wired so obviously that helps with downloads but I'm still kinda shocked.

I'm talking about a full install. I always wait until 100% anyway as the PS4 ramps up like a hairdryer when installing. PS4 games are ready to start after a minute or so but it's not fully installed. Xbox One full installs take 10-15 minutes which I'm okay with.

If it is its faster regardless, ps4 is always patching as an after thought. In my setup it is definitely not slow. Guess the fast internet is worth it. Of course I'm comparing full install I don't play till its ready on any system old non trusting pc habits.

Yea, I am the same way. I let it fully install, let it update, reboot after the update, then play. But it is really weird of Microsoft to force the patch installation before you even install the disc. Oh well, like the other dozens of design choices they screwed up at launch, I am sure this will get rectified.

But PS4 also downloads the patches while the game installs, or are you talking about something else?

if they could have, they would have already done it by now. there isn't anything that ms has done in their ecosystem for online that sony cant or hasn't done.

Almost two years after and the installs times continue the same... painful.

Maybe BC was more important that start to play a disc game in few seconds... I don't know.

I'm starting to think that maybe sony has patented it, that along with playing music off usb in the background. two thing ms doesn't have.

and I'm not talking about that lame snap music to the side thing either. i mean pure music in the background

This is based on what?

What does that have to do with it, like at all? I don't know, your posts always have a smell of “but my company is better“ and I don't know why as it isn't needed.

Its funny how consoles are starting to become less convenient than PCs while PCs are getting more convenient than they were in the past.

Who knows, maybe in next generation, PCs will be more user friendly than consoles and have less issues to fiddle with in order to play games. But only because consoles are getting worse and worse in this.

based of the fact that its been 2 years and nothing has been done about it. "bu bu but teh Monthly updateszxcxzz"

whether you smell what ever you are smelling thats on you.

As along time PS4 owner and a new Xbox One owner I experienced this for the first time last night. I got home from work to find Until Dawn and Gears of War in my mailbox from GameFly. At about 7:30 I put both discs in. UD was ready within a couple minutes so I fired that up first. I played for 3 hrs then decided to check out Gears. IT WAS STILL INSTALLING. but it didn't have a percentage like it usually had so I thought it might have got hung up, I mean why else would it be installing 3 hrs later? So I tried pausing and restarting it, taking the disc out and putting it back in, etc. At that point is sat in "queued" status for the next 5 min until finally "Installing" again. Still no percentage. so I restarted my Xbox One, still nothing. Next I tried to uninstall the game and start fresh. that was a headache all it's own as the menus were completely unresponsive to me hitting "uninstall", even at one point not allowing me to turn off the system as the menu prompt was still controlling tiles in the background and not in the foreground of that menu. This prompted another reboot which I had to do on the console itself. Then I was finally able to uninstall it, and this time when I put the disc in it said "installing" with a percentage. it got to about 20% and said it was ready to play. I figured I'd play for a few minutes before I went to bed just to check it out. I hit the button to launch and it went to a black screen saying "checking for updates" it spun in this screen for 2-3 minutes until finally telling me there was no connection. (Which there was). I tried a few more times but still had the same issue.

I gave up with it at 44% installed and just went to bed.

I realize this is not indicative of every install process on Xbone (TItanfall installed just fine although it was a long wait) but I have NEVER in my almost 2 years of owning PS4 ever ran into anything quite like this. And if I had planned to play Gears last night and that was my first exposure to Xbox One there's no doubt that would cause me to think twice about my purchase. I hope MS resolved these install issues soon.

I assume I won't get to play an Xbox game until the next day when I buy one at night.

Everything else is a pleasant, but rare surprise.

and this is exactly what happens. people post about how they get midnight launch games and they don't feel like waiting that night to play so they wait till the next morning. which is a shame.

as an owner of ryse and dead rising 3, i can agree with this. ryse took basically a full day which is fucking comical

dead rising 3 was like 6 - 8 hours. first 2 games i had for the console as well :/

This man right here knows whats up.

I guess you know the pain after a whole generation on ps3 and as a Gran Turismo fan? ;-)

So what? MS wanted to get in on that action?

Point is both platforms should have learned from that, it seems the Sony did with the PS4, and MS went backwards

I think it's funny that most people who argue here don't even own the system. And yes, they really should do something about it but currently, as said before many times, there is still a technical article missing which measures install times on xbone, with and without patches, also on current games and not in article from 2013.

because ps3 had certain games that had to get installed....ALL of the xbox one games have to be installed.
Thats how its worse.

If you only talk about installs but patches also count to the ecosystem and I don't know how this can be worse than ps3 as it didn't have cumulative or differential updates. GT5 was already mentioned in this thread as one of the worst games in this case.

What the lol.
Background music patent???

We just told you that the newest game Gears took almost 20-25 mins to install. smh

again, this gen EVERY xbox one game takes time to install, AND patches.
not every game on the ps3 had to be installed.

“We“? I asked you for data, got a link from 2013 and now I get one game? Btw, 20 minutes? Seriously? I mean yes, that's more time than on ps4 but waiting 20 minutes to play a game? I guess people can live with that.

Well, this gen EVERY game on EVERY current gen console has to be installed, AND patched.
Do we have any data how fast patches are applied on both systems after games are installed? Does it matter how long it takes to download a patch (of course it does)? Are there comparisons of patch sizes?

after reading this thread you can't-- You know what....Nevermind.

Im done with this guy.

Most people can.

Well, this gen EVERY MOST games on EVERY current gen console has to be installed, AND patched.

Fixed that for you. I bought Until Dawn yesterday, put the disc in my console, watch the install progress bar for 20 seconds, and played my game. That was pretty cool. There was no patch because you know what? It's actually possible to make a game that fucking works right out of the box.

This shit should be the norm, it's what we used to get, it's great and I miss it.

Phil say's it's a high priority the dev team and none of the patches since have addressed it.

Yes. Again, so everyone can sleep tonight: it's worse than on ps4 but that doesn't mean that all games take forever to install on xbone, there is still variation per game. And evidently, it also makes a difference if you are online as this makes the installation process even slower because the patch is also directly applied.
Edit: Wait, the article states that some games were faster installed on xbone than on ps4? How can this be? Really, really, really, we need more data from an independent source
