Xenoblade X Localization Changes for Character Models

I was indifferent to the Lin costume changes, but taking away player character customization options for no reason doesn't sit well with me, especially as I usually prefer to play as female characters.

I understand why'd they would remove boob sliders. Because of all the feminist controversy over here.

But they should had remedied this by allowing us to change guys crotch sizes. >.> Boom equal.

I hate when they take out options to customize characters out. I mean The Sims has boob sliders but people don't argue that The Sims is being sexist, it's because The Sims is primary is played by females (in this article below they say more than 60% of the gamers are female.)

http://www.nydailynews.com/life-style/women-click-sims-article-1.283191

I'm pretty sure it's more than that, especially considering how dated this article is.

There's definitely a double standard.

How was this first post?! Hilarious.

-Lin's base model has been changed so that the bikinis are not as revealing. (This was already known)
OK, fine.
-The character creator has been modified so that the bust slider has been removed and so therefore when creating a female character, all female characters created by the player have by default medium-sized breasts.
NOA what the fuck are you doing, this is worse than that time they "localized" tharja.

Can't wait to see what the do to FE. :|

GG should be proud of the attention they have given to the issues
total backfire ahahaha

don't think this has anything to do with GG at all. Would be legit surprised to see a boob slider in any game on a nintendo platform.

Reason I said that is because the 'boob slider' is pure fanservice in the sense that, in the JPN version, only the female character has such an option. If the male had something similar, it would balance it out and feel less out of place. Something like a bulge slider as some have suggested, or a way to detail out muscle mass beyond 'slim, normal, built' .. Just to make it less one-sided.

The character creator in Xenoblade X is just soooo basic and minimal. It's all in the face, the rest is pretty much nothing. Only a boob slider. Just doesn't make sense.

Breasts are a pretty big distinguishing feature for human females.

I assume female characters don't get facial hair options.

In the fight for better representation of women in video games one of the awful side effects has been people body shaming real body types that women have. Removing overly sexy stuff that is only there to serve as masturbatory material for men is one thing, but removing an option that the player can use to express themselves or better represent themselves in the game is awful. The existence of different breast sizes is not inherently sexual, it's a fact of life, it is how they are presented in games that is the problem, but we constantly have people wanting to get rid of anything that they see as not the "normal" size because "it's sexual", what people don't realize is that claiming that large or small breasts only exist for sexual reasons is body shaming actual real life women. Breast sizes should not be an issue, it should be how the outfits in the game present them and removing the ability to have different breast sizes misses the point entirely.

A+ post.

It's similar to people pointing at thin, big-breasted, or otherwise conventionally attractive characters and claiming that they're "unrealistic" and "real women don't look like that," when for most cases there clearly *are* real women who look like that, as evidenced by cosplayers of said characters. Criticizing designs that are excessively sexualized in order to appeal to men or society's related tendency to shame women who aren't sufficiently conventionally attractive is fine, what's not fine is when that turns into shaming/excluding women who *are* thin, big-breasted, or otherwise conventionally attractive.

Point me to a single post in this topic where someone suggests that any particular type of breast is shameful, should be censored, etc. The people arguing in favor of this, myself included, are talking about the incongruity of the slider itself existing, not arguing that only one type of breast is okay.

Was the breast slider the only body modification you could do? I thought you could change stuff like height, weight etc.

So, I'm just gonna wildly assume they did this because you could make your main character look even younger than Lin but still put inappropriate clothes on your main regardless, so without the boob slider the main character can never look as chibi as Lin does(?).

I guess they wanted to be more consistent with the Lin change as having a chibi main character would render the changes to Lin sorta pointless, but straight up removing the slider just seems like a poor choice. Only censoring Lin, just leaving the slider in and accepting that custom characters are just a wildcard in your game-design would've been a better choice imo, because what they did now only limits a part of the game without really addressing the issue.

These changes are completely inconsequential. Anyone upset by this needs to review their priorities. It's pretty silly to remove the bust slider I admit, but to say it's ruined in any way or that the game is negatively affected in any notable capacity by these changes is pure lunacy. If you require your female characters to have huge breasts then I think there are some "adult" games available that might be more suiting to your taste.

If they're so inconsequential, why would they remove the option at all? Surely they would just not do anything, right?

These changes are appropriate, and will not affect the quality of the game at all. If you want to look at breasts, they are available on the internet.
Great point. I'm sure if I just Google image search a fulsome pair of funbags on my second monitor while making a character I'll get the exact same experience as I would with the slider in the game.

Thanks!

The Lin changes are exactly what should happen.

The removal of the bust slider is a bit silly but at the same time there was no comparable customization for the male characters, and in reality this makes it more balanced so I'm not really bothered by it. Still a bit of an overprotective move on Nintendo's part.

I guess Nintendo doesn't want people showing overtly skipimy outfits on Miiverse with Low & High Bust sizes....so that's likely why they removed that feature.

Bites for those wanting customization for their female MC's but not something that outright ruins the game; its still going to be the same game.

Its interesting seeing Nintendo do these kinds of moves, as their adapting of software from Japan to the West is always fascinating to see.

They want to keep an image, so them making these moves make sense. Just bites for people wanting more customization for there female characters :l.

I don't know, I'm just not seeing the connection. Are breasts the only thing separating a young looking girl avatar from a grown woman avatar? It just seems to me more of a "please don't sexualize breasts" than a "don't make young looking girls" issue.

Nobody complaining about the removal of the slider actually cares about small breasted adult women being attacked over their body image.

So is there a bust slider for men then, or is every guy supposed to be super ripped/hipster thin?

No, and the sliders for women were just height and breast size. It barely qualifies as a character creator.

Here is a little secret. I don't actually care about this change. I cared even less about the Lin one. This is however a good hill to do battle on (unlike that last change) to try and prevent future things like this, or for them to go further. Since this is a completely harmless thing either way it is a good place to stop before more things change in later localizations.

As a side note, several people that are for this (actually don't even know if they are for changing games in localizations, or if they just like to argue) have brought up people's desire to make bigger breasts. If I was making a female character in this I would have used the slider to go a bit smaller, but that option was also removed. You are stuck with one option where before you had more.

I don't think there is a male exclusive trait that affects the body silhouette with as much variability as breasts. I think you're actually arguing against human evolution.

That's silly, there IS no comparable male option. A dong slider would absolutely not be equivalent.

I also don't think it is a good precedent to set for something to be okay to remove in the localization of a game if it isn't something that is available on both male and female characters. So I really don't understand the people claiming that it is okay to just take out an option because it isn't also available on men.

Seems like they're okay with that kind of stuff on the Bayonetta Miiverse community:

Granted, it's par for the course with Bayonetta. But if image is the primary concern, people unfamiliar with Bayonetta (so every person on the planet according to sales) would get the same impression you say they are trying to avoid.

Nintendo walked into that when they agreed to fund Bayonetta 2 and a Wii U Port of Bayonetta 1 though; that game has sexual themes front and center, so Nintendo couldn't avoid that.

You make a good point though; Nintendo is far more famous for Mario, Zelda and DK but not their mature titles they published (Fatal Frame, Bayonetta, ect).

Yeah, Saints Row did it for the lulz, but in the end the only customization option that would make sense as a male-exclusive thing to "balance it out" is facial hair... which is a thing you can do in the character creator!

Honestly I would be upset about the removal of the boob slider if the default proportions are overly huge.

Surprised to say it looks like they aren't, so overall those changes don't bother me.

To maybe alleviate some of the concerns regarding the relative simplicity of the character creator (which I'm not trying to deny), the impression I got so far is that this game actually has a ton of armour sets and clothing you can slap onto your party members. So while the physique and face of your character might not allow for a lot of customisation (even less now!) there still are many ways with which you can make your character look different.

I strongly suspect the minimalist body options are directly related to the sheer volume of armor sets, assuming it doesn't do the WoW thing where a lot of them look totally goofy on certain models.

Well, we are talking about the body here. If you want a female equivalent to facial hair, I'm sure female-only make-up, hairstyles and stuff can possibly even that out. Even if a lot of make-up is unisex in XBX (like facepaint).

But still, it would be fine IF there were more body options. There could be options for the butt, waist, bust etc. For the male that same boob slider could change muscle mass in the chest. It will all lead to a different silhouette.

But seriously, you can only change height and boobs... While the male only has height. It's just awkward and has 'fanservice' written all over it.

All the same breast size fucking lmao. What a dystopian setting.

They should at least have done something cool like setting the size based on your console id.

On top of that, you also eventually unlock a fashion option that you can apply to every piece of armor, so that you can sport your favorite look while retaining the stats benefit of wearing the better pieces. The customization is off the wall in the game.

We get all the DLC at launch for free or something, yeah? Because IIRC, the fashion option is unlocked immediately if you have the DLC, which would be fucking awesome. I love playing dress up so much more when doing so doesn't mean my character suffers in gameplay.

Wut? Of course it is. Removing blood and gore in the JP version of Until Dawn also counts as censorship.

The idea that it's censorship is as legitimate as the idea that the localisation team and developers chose to balance the male and female slider options which would require either adding a chest size modifier for men, or removing the titty slider.

It's not "a universe of all the same breast size". The NPCs remain unchanged and will have varying sizes if that's the thing you're into. It's just your character in this mostly single player game can't change the size of breasts anymore.

It's really no different from the tons of other games out there with customization that don't include breast sliders, which is the majority of them.

Very minor removal.

Heck, even in MMORPGs like WoW (the biggest one there is) there are no breast sliders and people aren't freaking out that everyone in the universe has the same breast size.

Still though, I'm confused about NOAs censorship direction and inconsistency.

I'd be fine with weight and muscle tone options, but those aren't male specific attributes. A "Pecs" slider by itself wouldn't really make that much of a difference visually without becoming comically exaggerated.

I guess they could have added a dick size modifier. A slider for bulge.
