XSEED is at it again [It might actually be TITS SC this time]

Might be too much to ask, but if they release this one and the first one in English on the PC I will probably buy them. My brother loved the first one, but I just can't play on a handheld and I am starving for a decent JRPG.

Well, that's certainly the first time I've heard that. I admit I haven't played the English version all the way to the end, so I'm not sure about how the game is written in English, but it's certainly written well in Japanese. But as I mentioned, most of FC is a prologue for the series at large, and it's really the last chapter that's just super awesome. I'm surprised you didn't feel that way, though.

Well, if/when I play SC I'll definitely go for the JP version even if an English version is available.

After finishing FC the last thing I wanted to do was start SC. I was not a fan of FC's long, drawn-out, usually-not-very-interesting dialogue that often made it difficult for me to stay focused. I love reading books, but this was just not good writing (I played the English version, maybe it's better in Japanese), and I didn't find the story interesting or novel. Maybe I'll give SC a try after a really long break, though, as I've heard the story is better in SC. I've also played a few hours of Zero no Kiseki and I've found that to be better than FC so far as well.
I'm with you here. Hell I couldn't bring myself to finish it. But the constant high praise I always read is making me reconsider for a summer rttp

It isn't too much to ask, because the games are already for PC, and XSEED's Steam sales have been fantastic.

Cool.

I've been slowly working my way through SCHD and I'm enjoying it. Nice to see it seems to be finally coming over.

A PC release would give the game a nice wide audience while avoiding the issue of dead/dying platforms.

Yeah, an English PC version of Trails 1 shouldn't be THAT hard since it's already translated and there's a PC version of the game already (in a couple languages no less). And the Ys series has done really well on Steam so there's a decent incentive there.

This is reply I got like some time ago:

We are indeed looking into a Steam release of The Legend of Heroes as well, but that title is a little trickier due to the massive amount of work that's involved in programming as we would have to start over from scratch rather than porting the English PSP release (though granted we already have the English text).

We will continue to look into ways of making it happen, so hopefully it can happen sooner rather than later.

I make different takes on this same post alot, but I love posting it, so whaddebuh.

FC's first two thirds is slow gaming done right. Stop and smell the roses in a game built to get the player in a postive feedback loop of poking around the world, the characters, the lore, the character building. The lore gets very deep, but much of it is from passing conversations with NPCs, reading the manuals, and other ways. If you skip it, you don't lose anything vital, but if you delve, you get some wonderful worldbuilding. It makes sense. The world makes sense. The game makes sense.

Quests are done better in FC than in most single player RPGs, they're not busywork, they're not honey-do-lists (eyes SMT4's Neutral route), and they're not a great gob of neurotic grind. You need the sepith from them but you don't need ALL of it. There's a nice reward for doing all of them but you don't NEED need it. It's a nice balance many games don't even bother to even aim for.

The dialogue, and its localization, is a rarely praised jewel. The problem I have with a vast majority of RPGs is the dialogue flaps back and forth from vast seas of empty pleasantries to overly dense exposition, then back to vast seas of empty pleasantries. From bad script-writing to quirks of language gone unquirked, dialogue has more often than not been meaningless lipflapping rather than making its stay both welcome and worthy. And it has gotten worse since the PS2 era dawned, with ever more words in ever more games.

XSEED however did a fantastic job giving lines of dialogue weight, and even faceless NPCs noticable personalities thru what they say. Even (especially) Joshua's strident niceties serve a purpose greater than filling space on a disc. FC shares that with the Persona series, light breezy dialogue that turns mundane small talk into enjoyable actual conversation. Sadly, the two of them weren't able to raise the levels of quality of RPG dialogue as a whole any better than PS:T was on the darker, grimmer end...

Well when they release the first on PC I can finally play it since I prefer to play long RPGs on not a tiny screen.

I have a harder time if it's on my desktop for these sort of RPG's. In my case, I like not getting out of bed and just playing all day. At least for Sora no Kiseki.

Well right after I posted that I read that a PC version does exists so edited my post a little. Guess not quick enough. Anyway it does give me more hope that a PC release in the west will happen. I will keep my fingers crossed.

Yeah, but they're not going to release the PSP version. They're not that dumb. I hope.

Yeah, hopefully. I think a Steam and PS3 releases would be best way to maximize dollar potential in this case. Obviously it would do a lot better than on PSP, but it would also be a good idea to release FC on PS3/Steam then too. It's a tricky situation.

It's easier for me since I stream and usually people asking "Why aren't you doing anything?" makes me not wander on my compy. Also I just hate handhelds in general even if I own and use both of the current ones.

Made it to the final boss of FC but I was to underpowered to beat him so I gave up. Hopefully FC will get a Steam release like SC is (or appears to be) and I can beat the game finally.

This is good news if true. FC was one of the best JRPGs this gen, even if it really wasn't originally from this gen.

XSEED however did a fantastic job giving lines of dialogue weight

To me, it felt like 10% of the script was either "O-Okay..." or "What the hell!". After seeing each of those about 10,000 times (and that's really not much of an exaggeration) I wanted to scratch my eyes out.

What does he mean by that? Does the PC version rely on Flash?

It's the most recent game released in Japan. (Sen no Kiseki, Trails in the Flash)

The one we're getting now is Trails in the Sky (FC, SC, TC) and the ones that came after were Trails of Zero, Trails of Blue, and Trails in the Flash.

This is too much. I was expecting a trails Steam announcement any day now, given the comments made earlier last month, but actual SC hinting. I can't.

Can we stop using siliconera's terrible localised names, please?

Oh lol. I'm dumb.

Thank you for the quick response.

Right now I just want SC, so I can see what happens next. Then Zero looks pretty cool, Flash looks a bit generic, but I'd likely pick it up if it came out. Do hope we can make it to Zero though.

This is exactly how I feel. I thought they were getting ready to announce FC for PC. Didn't expect any SC at all until next year, at least.

FC, SC, Third, Zero, Blue, (Nayuta, but it's not canon), Flash. Man, we got a long way to go.

What do we use then...?

Is it too much trouble to use Zero, Ao, and Sen until we know what they should/would be? SiliconEra has a lovely habit of translating things without context.

(They are, afterall, the ones who incorrectly claimed that Sen was going to be a prequel to the series.)

I heard Third isn't entirely relevant to the events from FC and SC, if that's true, I don't mind them skipping it.

RyougaSaotome puts it best: 3rd is the most important title for Zero and Ao. AND Falcom has stated that 3rd is important to Sen's setup. Skipping it is a stupid idea. It's more important to the later games than the earlier ones.

I just used it 'cause "Flash" was mentioned.

Ah, I had no idea. I figured from some comments I read that it was kind of a 'here is more of the same cause people like these characters' or something.

I'm hoping that they do well with releasing SC and some version of FC to the masses so the series can thrive like it deserves.

It's not THAT important to Zero and Ao. There is one point that makes more sense and hits home more if you played 3rd first but you can definitely play Zero/Ao without it. 3rd's plot points are going to be more relevant for Sen though.

I need to do another Ao playthrough for Sen.
