Yahoo: Playstation 3 is in trouble

Eltacoman said:
That yahoo video player sucks so I'm not gonna even try to watch it, but can someone explain how they think it's in trouble? Logically it isnt. It has outsold the 360 almost every month this whole year and it cost $100 more. It has the (non arguably) best exclusives this year + a chance LBP could change how people play games altogether. Can someone educate me?
Ps3 outselling the xbox360 doesnt matter. Theyre both struggling. Ps2 was a success story. Wii is comparable to ps2 in terms of popularity. HD gaming is comparable to the n64.

Fable II is a LOT better than the original. I'm not sure if previews have really carried just how much more expansive, fun, and alive the game is yet, but expect it to sell over a million without too much trouble. How the co-op works is pretty brilliant.

Sony will be 3rd place this holiday in US at least, but they'll hardly crash and burn.

I agree.

They cannot be in the black with these cuts. Their quest for Wii market share has placed them back in the red - which is fine providing you move a lot of units and which translate to increased software sales. Microsoft needs to see a huge spike in month to month sales because of this price cut. A mediocre increase in sales over the PS3 will be judged as a disaster.
Source? Are we allowed to spew whatever flies inside our heads?
The price cut has been a long time overdue. Any logic would suggest that it happened when they were able to cut productions costs as well.

The N64 topped out at a little less than 33 million units, according to Wikipedia. With 20 million 360s and 15 million PS3s (roughly) sold so far worldwide (without counting this coming holiday), that's pretty much a false statement.

No one can prove it either way. It's a lost argument. Talk about something else instead.

You want a source for an opinion? People like you need to be rick-rolled to special web pages deserving of your inquiries.

With how awesome the discussion has been I'd love to see all three consoles fail this holiday season and watch in awe as the sheople argue which one failed 3.76% less.

It doesn't take much to get the marketing department riled up does it.

I said its comparable. "IT" being the sluggish sales of the respective platforms. Point being, its not good, and playstation 3 outselling the Xbox360 means nothing of importance. Its in trouble. Now Microsoft found a niche that yields nice software numbers and have finally started to profit, thats the only realistic goal Sony can achieve now.

I dont see ps4 happening with the way things are now.

Really? Because I thought Peter really sold the game very well during his demo. In fact I was so impressed I bought a dog that looks exactly like the one in the game and named him Peter.

Ehh one of them has two major Nongames coming out. Its going to be unprecedented levels of pwnage.
Then again, great depression 2 is a real possibility.

That is true. The 360 still has 3 to 4 years of solid sales. It will most likely be in the 25 to 27 million range by end of 2008 meaning by end of 2009, it will have surpassed the N64 in sales. The 360 will probably be on pace with the original NES as far as sales go (The NES sold 62 million units. At its current pace, the 360 could be with in 5 to 10 million of that area in 3 to 4 years).

Yep. For about a half hour in a mix of single player and co-op. The overall feel of the game is different from the original. The combat is more fluid and the world more expansive.

I like dogs.

I also liked the first 4 hours of GTA4.

I hope it is good but really that isn't a good enough example. I'll probably buy it because there is nothing else like it out there though.

I never said anything was wrong with the PS3 holiday lineup or games. I just don't think it is as strong as the 360 lineup. Or the PC lineup for that matter.

What's coming out this Christmas for PC that will sell (well in the U.S)? The only thing I see selling is Spore, the WoW expansion and whatever the current Sims expansion is.

:lol :lol :lol

With at least 3 years to go in this generation and easily 1-2 additional price drops, the 360 by itself will smoke the N64, and that's without doing anything significant in Japan. It will surpass that number before holidays 2009 and 2 more years at a cheaper price to tack on.

You are nuts.

What's amazing is that the 360 has to drop it's price BELOW the Wii to even compete with the PS3 in sales.

You want to know what's more amazing? The real 360, is the premium. And that JUST NOW, after 3 years on the market, hit $299 which is what every other console up to this point launched at, or under.

3 years.

The 360 still won't be at a mass market price until the premium gets to $199 and then $149 after that(because I don't see it ever getting below that point unless hardrives become REALLY cheap).

So yeah, while the core /arcade may be cheaper than the Wii, and it will no doubt sell at that price point, most people will still want a hard drive with their 360. I still see the premium being the primary SKU, not the cheaper-than-Wii Arcade.

But the depressing part is that at $199, people are willing to suffer with a shitty experience for a while and eventually spend more than the cost of the PS3 to get the 360 to where it needs to be.

Lips defense force: ASSEMBLE!

I don't see Lips taking any crowd by storm. Rock Band, Karaoke Revolution and GHWT all fill that niche a little bit now, especially in terms of DLC.

Singstar is doing fantastic, but that's because it was well established before the rest of those.

Honestly. $1.50 for a song that you can only sing to, OR $1.99 for one you play on instruments, too?

Pretty sure the sales over the past few months have basically been neck and neck prior to the price cut. But yes, let's use hyperbole and claim there was no competition.

We will see. I am open to being it proved wrong, although I look for the game being good but I somehow doubt a great game. I would hardly consider a 1/2 hour enough time to make a proper preview of the game though, let along a lite-RPG.

The first one failed on the actual game because there was too much focus on all the side-orders, like marriage and such, its funny how most of the previewing that has been done on the second game has all been focused on the side-game again.

Sony wouldn't be Sony if they didn't find a way to shoot themselves in the ass and then claim it was intentional. They're arrogant and they continue to make these outlandish claims that seem to get lost in translation. They're a company that must be deconstructed before being constructed because they never seem to learn their lesson and just keep repeating their previous mistakes. Sony has a great lineup, but with the console priced at $399 their response to the price cut was to release a 160GB unit.

True, although I think at least "some" of their arrogance has subsided. There is still plenty there though hopefully the humbling of this generation will wake them up.

I'm surprised that there yet exist people who are (a) interested in the gaming scene and (b) still haven't realized the yawningly obvious fact that Sony fumbled and are now struggling to recover.

I use my ps3 to browse Gaf and watch youtube videos. I seriously play no games on it, thank god sony sent me a Socom beta so it;s actually getting some use. Come on Sony show me the GAMES. LBP and Kz2 can't come soon enough. Shit, I still want more rachect, not a shitty baby expansion pack. .>:(

PS3 is a long way off from being in trouble lol

i know alot of ppl who want one they just dont want to pay as much it is now lol

they really need to cut the cost befor xmas

2007 is the year of the PS3, no wait, 2008 is the year of the PS3, no wait 2009 is the year of the PS3.

Why can't Sony be nice and let someone else have a year?

The problems with the original Fable showed up once you hit the main portion of the game, but that's where I started in Fable II. While the game is still composed of distinct areas, unlike Oblivion, it's lost that narrow corridor feel the original had. There's generally more to do in the areas, while quests feel pretty similar to the original, which I didn't have a problem with. The combat is better. It's no DMC, but you can pull off some pretty cool combos as you work the enemies. Framerate is no longer shit, though it wasn't perfect in the build I played admittedly.

I guess it will all depend on what you felt were the failings of the first.

All 3 are sucking when it comes to first party games this generation. One thing I really liked about the original Xbox, was all the NEW IP's that were coming out of Microsoft and their deals with so many developers. I love NEW IP's.

I swear it seemd like MS had 4-5 first party games every month. Sure there was a lot of crap too, but a lot of that stuff was good and got forgotten like Blood Wake, Jade Empire, Rallisport Challenge, etc etc. Heck I even liked Blinx. It looked amazing, had a great concept and awesome music.

Now they are all playing it safe and developing sequels only to their most popular stuff and have cut back tremendously on new IP's. I hate that.

Same with Sony. They had a bunch of cool stuff last generation. Ico, Ratched, Jack and Daxter, etc.

And Nintendo? Well let's not talk about real new games IP's and Nintendo. They lost me a looooooong time ago. I didn't think they could do worse than their 64 days, but looking back, it now looks like that was their Golden Age for awesome new IP's with Goldeneye and Wave Race.

And we lost Sega too. So much cool new stuff in the DC days. First parties have gone downhill, IMO, when it comes to creativity.

As budgets rise, room for creativity drops, unless a developer has an absolutely stellar track record of developing new concepts.

Download services and other low-budget games are quickly becoming the creative engine of the industry, along with being the nostalgia outlet. It's only a matter of time before we start seeing big budget titles borrowing ideas from these smaller games in a big way.

True, I think it's going to be important for new big budget franchises to be easy accesable for newcomers while giving enough substance for experienced players.
Kind of like Little big planet.

Sure but it still sucks. I mean other than Gears, arguably Dead Rising and hopefully LBP, where are the new and exciting break-out hits that offer new and distinct experiences?

Where is the GTA of this generation?

Or other ones like KOTOR, ICO, Jet Set Radio, Shenmue, Phantasy Star Online,
Onimusha, Panzer Dragoon Orta, etc etc.

You know games that are new, different enough in a lot of areas that really make you go, I haven't played anything quite like this before. I can pretty much expect what every game coming out over the next year on any of the consoles will play and feel like.

When a company gets large, they experience slower growth. That's why some companies (hewlett packard?) split into two. In this case, PS3 and the Xbox 360 were competing for the same hardcore market that is relatively small. These consumers have a HD TV and they're willing to burn 500 clams at least for the system and games... With that said, there's still hardcore consumers but the 360 captured twice as much already and was still be able to keep it close during the "year of the PS3" and beat it.

Time to move on and hit mass market...it's been long overdue anyways.

Good point, I'd say Assassin's creed and CoD4 really defined next-gen gaming last year.

That's because it's a western role playing game. You know, "role playing" is a big part of rpgs. I like j-rpgs as much as most of you guys here on gaf (been playing them since the NES days) but what western rpgs offer in term of actual role playing was and is superior.

So yeah, the stuff you can do on the side give the game more depth so it's good to see that they've improved on the original.

I think it is pretty obvious that the PS3 will get mauled in the USA this XMas... but in Europe they have a good chance of winning. So maybe Yahoo should have said "in trouble in the US" :)
