Yakuza Community Thread - FEEL THE HEAT!

Looking ahead, I'm now becoming more and more curious as to where they're taking the series.

Like, what will be the end goal for Ichiban? Kiryu had protecting Haruka which lead to protecting the Tojo and ultimately protecting his kids too. That's always been his thing.

But will Ichiban go to the same lengths for the Tojo or is it his loyalty to his mentor that will be his defining motivation?
Will his goal be finding out the truth of what happened or will it be getting the Tojo back to it's glory? Is the Tojo in such a state that merely surviving will be an accomplishment?

How will Ichiban fight? From what we've seen, the Dragon most likely will not apply to this guy so he'll have more freedom in how he can fight. Will he be a practitioner of a certain fighting style? Will he have an amateurish fighting style like Kiryu's brawler style? Will he use more underhanded tactics and cheap tricks and weaponry? (low blows, pulling out pepper sprays in the middle of combos, sliding underneath the opponent's legs while they're going for an attack, pulling out a dagger out of nowhere) He seems shorter and smaller than Kiryu so I don't expect him to have the same level of controlled striking that Kiryu had but hey, who knows.

The mere fact that
the Omi has taken over Kamorucho ALONE is such a refreshing situation.
Really really interested to see where they take this because they have a lot of directions to explore. Personally I hope they explore the more shady side of the business that was rarely touched upon in the Yakuza games. The prostitution and pornography production/distribution and human trafficking side.
But I know they won't go that far because they gotta romanticize a lot of it :(

Damn, I'm excited for this pink suit wearing motherfucker.

i freakin loved 0 and kiwami so i went to watch the yakaza 2 recap video on the yakuza 4 game while waiting for yakuza 3 to arrive in the mail and it plays in a postage sized box in the middle of the TV screen.. holy hell

I'm getting a serious hankering to play Yakuza 4 again. I can't even explain it really but man I need some more Tanimura in my life.

It is a PS2 game after all lol. And you shouldn't watch that recap btw, it spoils way too much of the game and doesn't even have any real effect on the rest of the series.

I'd love for Ichiban to be a dirty fighter, lol. Make him a Ric Flair-styled character XD

I want some damned spinning piledriver Heat moves though, dammit.

Skipped 2 and I am playing Y3 right now. Man, people said the game starts slow, but I absolutely love the first four chapters (at 5 now) with its totally different pacing and overall vibe - I want a full-flegded Orphanage Kazuma Simulator now. :D

Y4 and 5 already dl'ed, no burnout in sight yet.

Yea, I love the orphanage as well, but it is distinctly slower than other Yakuza openings. I get why some people don't like to replay it when they revisit the game. I think one of the reasons I liked it so much is due to the history we have with Kazuma and Haruka. It would probably be difficult for some newcomers.

Also, you should keep posting your reactions as you play through.
Can't experience Y3 for the first time again, but this is a substitute.

Hey, guys.

So, I'm done with Kiwami. Loved it! Proved to me that even in its most primal, unrealized form, Yakuza is still capable of providing memorable experiences a few other games manage.

I need more Yakuza, but I'm not sure about the next step, yet.

I prefer waiting for Kiwami 2 instead of playing the original version, so I thought about jumping to 3 for now. I heard that 2 is mostly very stand-alone and it would be OK to jump to 3. Problem is, 3 isn't available digitally and it's very expensive to get online. With shipping, it'll cost me 65-70$ best case scenario. I'll also have to wait a few weeks for it to arrive, which means I'll be starting the new semester and won't have the time to marathon the series anymore.

I have Y4 and 5 digitally (thanks. PS+) though, so I'm thinking I should start with 4 for now, and get back to 3 later. Will this be possible, or will 4 spoil 3 completely?

You can definitely go like this:

Y4 -> Y5 -> Y3 -> Y6 -> Y:Kiwami 2

Yakuza 3 is also standalone not unlike Yakuza 2.

Just don't watch any recap videos. Also try looking up ebay for a copy of Y3, or going used if possible.

Thank you. I'll go with this order.

I checked eBay, it seems I can get it new for 50$ including shipping, which is kinda reasonable I guess. I'll get it for sure down the line.

EDIT: Turns out one of my friends is a secret long-time Yakuza fan who owns all the games, so he lends me both 3 and Dead Souls!

Why is the masochist guy from the dominatrix sub story in 0 so similar to Hironobu Sakaguchi lol.

Hell yeah, even Dead Souls. 3 is one of my favorites, hope you enjoy it!

Thank you! Having a blast so far, although the localization feels a bit weird coming from Zero/Kiwami. Kazama is Fuma now, and Kiryu-chan is Kazzy. Also
Dojima has a son and he's a good guy and the Tojo clan chairman?? More reasons to get hyped for 2 I guess.

The presentation is far closer to Zero than Kiwami, thankfully. Long elaborate cutscenes are back, and I love this whole
Kazuma retiring to run an orphanage angle. So sweet and heartwarming.

This series, man.

Stick with it, Saejima has the worst segment in Y5. I think its probably my least favorite part of the entire series (including Dead Souls).
Don't worry, I'm gonna power through, but it has dramatically slowed my roll. I went through Kiryu' section in like two days, this has been going on for like three.

Everything is just taking so much longer than necessary. Mid talk with Kosaka after fighting finding out about Majima... we had to stop and meet in a different place to continue.

He's in a Y0 substory too.

It just hit me that Yakuza 1 turned 11 in the west yesterday and I both beat Kiwami and introduced my sister to the series with 0 the same day. So cool.

Localization wasn't bad before, but they changed a lot of stuff to avoid confusing players (they could confuse Kazuma with Kazama I guess). The lack of honorifics was weird though considering they're used in the Y1 dub, haha.

I much prefer the post 5 localization though, for sure.

But yes! The opening of the game is so beautiful, it makes me happy to see someone else enjoy it the same way! Kazuma and his kids are the most adorable thing in the series, sniff.

Not seen enough to decide how great the mechanics are for hunting, but this is a vast improvement over running around the same static square and spending time with a ghost of Christmas past.

I punched a fucking bear!

That ghost shit is pretty rough, not hyped to for that when I eventually replay Y5. The hunting side story was cool imo.

Bear punching was hype

I hate that most of Saejima's pre-hunting part of the story was so terrible because by the time I got to the village I was so done that I rushed the rest, even though the hunting game seemed fun.

Yakuza 5 seems like a fantastic game to enjoy in premium adventure though, so I'll definitely go back to it someday.

Before Kiwami I always saw it as
he and Yumi were dating. Period. They act like they were dating. People around them act like they were dating. Everything points to the fact that they were dating. He gave her a ring for Christ's sake. Then again this series gets flat out dumb when it comes to giving Kiryu a love interest.
after Kiwami
they added in some BS where they were still sorting out their feelings or some shit. I hated the ring quest with a passion.

The worst is in Yakuza 5
when he is literally living with Mayumi, she's CLEARLY acting like a girlfriend. And the game is like nope, they aren't dating,
even though every implication and bit of body language says that they are. But we can't have Kiryu have a real interest in an adult relationship, it's telephone clubs, hostesses,
and occasionally getting raped by a cartoonish trans person.

I think it's just SEGA being a bit dumb with the retcon trying to illustrate a point that wasn't necessary, I don't necessarily hate it but I can see it mucking a few things
(hey at least we saw more Shinji.)

I'm still pissed that they toss Kaoru to the side like that, I always thought she had the best story with Kiryu and helped him move on from Yumi's death to find happiness.

Some changes were odd, but the whole Fuma thing gets reverted starting with 4 (I assume as part of the backlash with 3's cut content). Kazzy was always my favorite localization bit from the series, because that felt it had effort after the first game's weird translation.

To be fair, the localization of the first game was handled by a totally different team before Inbound/whoeverelse, so when 2 was localized, they dropped stuff like the honorifics and people saying aniki/oyabun/kazuma-chan/etc.

and in my view, they were all the better for it, because I always felt that the games after the first one had solid localization with their creative dialogue and almost NEVER needing to use honorifics, memes (sure they still made jokes, but they were creative), or not translating certain words
(I'm looking at you Atlus with your Senpai nonsense)
Even with the shenanigans of 3, I always felt that it was top-notch work on the translation. I do dock them a bit for keep the localized names for a while
(and naming Mame the dog, Rex, though that was only in 3)
.

Atlus taking over (and let me be absolutely clear I am forever thankful/grateful that they're even doing these games because they're a huge task to translate) was a step back in regards to the quality, overall it's still good and not a deal breaker...but they could do so much more in those details and still make it feel authentic.

So I kind of called it a night once I reached the city headquarters save point in Saejima's section, does the imaginary hostess' affinity towards Saejima apply to the actual lady?

hahaha yeah no
shame cause she's stacked as i recall

man i get why dudes try kazzy in kiwami for scuffing their pumas but it's like...bruh, this guy just picked up a fuckin' motorcycle and smacked 2 of your dudes, might be time to call it a day

also next yakuza related survey i do, my comment is gonna be SERIES IS PERFECT BUT PLS LET US SAVE GAME & SYSTEM DATA AT THE SAME TIME ALREADY

Reminds me that she was my favorite hostess out of all the games, actually, that Saejima one in Y5.

Also that match girl subquest. Sweet.

Ayyyyyyyyyy

It turns out I had 4 installed on my ps3 the whole time. Know what I'm playing next :D

And left the ps3 on overnight to dl 5 so I got that set up as well :D.

Any tips on how to approch 4? Playtime, things to do, how its different from 0/kiwami etc. I know bout the 4 different character stories

From 4 onwards, play the games on Hard. They become painfully easy with the addition of multiple protagonist due to balancing being more difficult, I guess.

Also don't rush any of the characters. Their stories are over relatively quickly if you focus too much on the main objectives, and you really want to enjoy their sub stories and fun combat styles.

Yeah Fuck it, first thing I'm doing today is plugging the ps3 back in and playing Y4. Even though I have Vanquish and Sonic mania to play too.

Goddamn it SEGA, why are your games so good?

lol wtf, I had to delete almost everything off my ps3 to download yakuza 5. It says its only 23 gb, but I had to get rid of much more than that.

Also, I platinumed dead souls today! The grind to level 99 was brutal

Ps3 requires double the space of the game for digital installs.

23 GB for the setup then it installs the game taking up 46 GB space before deleting the setup and leaving the installed game.

Cool, I'm kind of realizing that the whole hostess is a part of Japan that I'm not particularly fond of, and if it worked out the way I was worried, the gamification of it would've soured me even more.

EDIT: First subquest right outside Saejima's safehouse.... this game is damn good.

I've already finished Y4 and now I'm planning on replaying it starting tomorrow.

Should I do a New game plus or is the "Legend" difficulty unlocked?
