Any indication of what caused this outage?
No idea. Could be LOIC morons, could be someone tripped over an ethernet cable at Sony HQ, could be Amazon's EC2 cloud computing service fucking up.

Go do something else instead.

Well I guess my Portal 2 copy will remain in it's plastic.

Luckily I'm playing Mass Effect 2, so this isn't affecting me much.

Does Sony even use Amazon EC2?
well, if D2M15 is right, seems that SOE (and perhaps the new SNEA?) use it, as well as lots of other big, otherwise unrelated sites.

Ouch to Amazon if true.

So...what are you lot going to spend the Amazon credit you'll be getting as compensation on? I think I'll wait for the SSF4 AE DLC. :D

Oh who am I kidding, the best we can hope for is a free copy of Trash Panic. :p

Crap, I can't get me some Portal 2 Steam achievements without being logged into PSN!

I'll have to download the PC version of the game, meanwhile. 10 GIGS?! YOU HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME.

So they changed it?

I know Hulu doesn't work because I was going to use it last night. It was another egg in the face moment for me as I told my daughter to switch from blu-ray player to PS3 to watch Hulu. (it's much faster on PS3) She grumblingly agree but complain how PS3 always want to update something, there sure enough was update both app and firmware but after update it wouldn't start and giving back log in error code.

While we are investigating the cause of the Network outage, we wanted to alert you that it may be a full day or two before we’re able to get the service completely back up and running. Thank you very much for your patience while we work to resolve this matter. Please stay tuned to this space for more details, and we’ll update you again as soon as we can.

In other news, is PSN still down? It was down last night when I went to bed but I figured all would be well by now.

Edit: it's for the best, though, probably, so I'm not tempted to log in and do Portal 2 co-op or raid in DC Universe tonight. There's work to be done.

It worked for me last night, so unless it's intermittent, then it should be back up.

I get in the app but no videos stream for me. Bar stops 1/4 way
Weird, i'm using it right now and its working just fine. I know a few other people in this thread have been able to use it as well.

A friend of mine works at a local software company and said they are having issues as well, seems to be a lot of business having server issues, may be linked.

this is what happens when you install Steam.

You're not cool enough to have an Edge avater. >:(

Knew it, it's EC2. Fuckin' the whole Internet up. Poor Amazon's gonna hafta pay up for this.

"Free" network infrastructure crumbles under the weight of 3 of the biggest releases in some time, one of which ties to an outside service allowing cross-platform play? Shocked. But yeah, I'm sure the SOCOM freaks are, well...freaking out.

FUD

I have a hard time believing that three games are the cause of such a massive outage that could possibly take 2 days to fix.

I can see MK9 being kind of big, but are Socom and Portal really going to be big on the PS3?

Yeah, Netflix working just fine for me. Good to know.

So can I still play Portal 2? I don't care about steam achievements, but I don't want to play if my game/trophies can be affected on ps3.
Yeah you can still play no problem. Just sync your trophies next time PSN is up.

The only thing you might lose is the playtime counter on Steam, if you care about that.

It's not EC2 related. The main PSN servers are hosted in Japan.

remember the massive XBL outage? I couldn't connect for a month.

It wasn't from an attack, it was because more people were using XBL than they thought or had the resources for.

Same could be true for PSN, I just hope it isn't a month :p

That's what they said it was. It's not extremely likely that years into an established service they got some exponential spike. Who really knows what happened there.

TWO OR THREE DAYS?!?!

I've got a GT5 Championship race to run on Saturday! God dammit who ever it is to blame.

Honestly if this is hackers related I really hope they get proper jail-time and $50000+ fines just so that others don't dare do the same, without thinking a lot.

I was able to watch netflix last night even if it didn't sign-in to PSN. So I guess netflix works without PSN. Vudu on the other hand, didn't start.

Hopefully the service is up sooner than later. This is bad for any true gamer.
