Your favorite multiplayer experience this generation?

Warhawk

Warhawk will probably be the only game this generation (minus Uncharted) that I will think fondly about 10 years from now. The game is multiplayer perfection. You can play so many rolls within a game, and each is very important. The maps are vast, and the graphics are very clean. Each time I hear someone mention it, I have no choice but to play. I think thats what I'm going to do now.

Easily. By a mile, and I've played pretty much almost everything you CAN play online.

For local Mutliplayer? As well as Reach I'd also say...

Call of Duty 2 - Before perks and tubes and commando and martyrdom, this game just had extremely balanced gameplay. For me it was pretty much the perfect game on the PC. and oh god the no scopes, oh god.

Honorable mentions:

Team Fortress 2 - I've sunk way too many hours into this game. I love the item system, even if it has gone a bit overboard lately. I don't have 70% of the newer weapons and items, but I don't feel that I'm at any disadvantage because of it. That great balance, mixed with a very talkative and fun community, makes it one of the best multiplayer experiences I've ever had.

Halo 3 - I never got good at it as I suck with thumbsticks, but it was still great fun. The competitive intensity that I had only experienced in tournaments and matches in CoD came readily in every single match of Halo. Love it or hate it, no drop-in/drop-out certainly brings a competitive edge to this game. Also worth mentioning, the theatre tools opened up machinima and the like to a whole new level. I guess that's not really multiplayer related, but still community related. Halo: Reach improves on 3 in almost every way, but so far I have been far less immersed and interested in Reach than I was in 3.

Oh yeah and 4 player co-op. Damn, what a good game.

Rock Band - I don't really have a whole lot to say here. As a guitarist, I'm not really drawn to RB because of the "You can be like a rock star!" mentality. I like it because it's a skill-based game that involves you interacting with a lot of really good music, simple as that.

Have you played Warhawk?

Yeah, luckily that's why I threw in the word almost.

Warhawk is one of the few I haven't. But I'm not normally a fan of flight games. Not normally anyway, doesn't mean there isn't room for one to change my mind.

I just don't know anyone who owns this game (so I can borrow) and I haven't seen it at any rental places either. So I won't buy an online only game that I haven't tried, in a genre I don't normally enjoy.

COD4 -- played for 2 years straight. Loved it.
BC2 -- most memorable experiences, a la "Battlefield Moments." Incredible when teamwork was involved.

I guess Uncharted 2 for online and Mario Kart Wii for local multilayer.

Also, loved NSBM Wii, LBP, Burnout Paradise and the Rock Band games to name a few others.

Team Fortress 2 is hands down my favourite. It's my most played game ever.

I've had a heap of other great multi-player experiences this gen and feel these are worth a mention:

Left 4 Dead 1/2
Bioshock 2
Uncharted 2 - Though it isn't nearly as much fun since the crushing health patch.
Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light
Enemy Territory: Quake Wars

Modern Warfare 1&2. Played the shit out of both. Will be reinstalling MW1 because MW2 seems kind of dead with the amount of time its now takes to find a game.

Team Fortress 2, brilliant online experience.

Battlefield Bad Company 2, stopped playing it because my C2D is just not good enough to make it a fluent experience, but the experience I had playing that game online, the buildings blowing up, the excellent sound effects, it was great.

Minecraft- Having faction PVP wars, raiding dungeons, building, destroying, exploring. And doing all of that with my best friends. So damn good.

Bad Company 2- Probably my favorite shooter ever. The intensity of running to a control point with walls exploding, buildings collapsing and people dying all around you made this game an experience that I don't think can be matched for a long time.

Warhawk no doubt. That bastard game stopped me enjoying anything else online cos I was near enough addicted. The depth (or shallowness) it can provide is astounding.

Love it!

Warhawk. No doubt.

Modern Warfare 2. I know I'm in the minority, but I loved the chaos. I was never a cheap player, either (never noobtubed, never used OMA, etc.)... I used a TAR-21 and an AA secondary 90% of the time and had a blast. I appreciate the more balanced play of Black Ops, the greater emphasis on 1-on-1 gun battles, and the removal of dumb stuff like deathstreaks and nukes — but sometimes I miss predator missiles, AC-130s and challenges that actually rewarded the player (with titles/emblems).

To the person who said they haven't tried Warhawk yet because they don't like flight games, I should point out Warhawk isn't just a flight game, it's an everything game: on foot, jetpack, jeep, tank, APC, jet, dropship, turrets, etc. It's an amazing feeling to team up with a buddy in split-screen and take on the Internet together, venturing out into the wilderness with nothing but a one-hit-kill knife and a sniper rifle, sneaking through the foliage as other players roar by overhead in jets or go hurtling by in jeeps, and after the epic LotR-esque journey to the other team's base, to have your buddy cover you, picking off people with the sniper rifle as you run in, grab the flag, hijack a jeep and come racing back to your buddy to pick him up and make your getaway, racing through a tunnel with an enemy plane following behind like that one bit in The Last Crusade where the plane chases Indy and his dad through the tunnel. So fun! XD

Uncharted 2 praise post

Came in to post this, and wasn't disappointed at the OP. I actually haven't played many online games outside of Demons Souls and Uncharted 2.

I love how fast paced the Uncharted 2 MP is. It is very arcadey, and I love that about it :D

Thanks to this thread I tried Uncharted 2 multiplayer for the first time, and it's incredible. I heard Uncharted 3 multiplayer will be even better, this time I will make sure I jump aboard from day 1.

Aside from the godly VS. Mode and 4-Player modes from NSMBDS and NSMBWii, my favorite Online game has been Dungeon Fighter.

Screw turn-based RPGs!* Screw all of them!!! aaaauuuughhhh

*except Mario RPGs and teh Pokeymanz

Burnout Paradise - I spent hundreds of hours online in that game.

Same. I've never had so much fun playing with randoms online.

Playing with friends though, my most enjoyable this gen has been Left 4 Dead 2.

Has to be Halo 3.

Whilst I'm somewhat burnt out on Halo now (Reach multiplayer is disappointing) and I am playing the Call of Duty games far more often, I still think of Halo 3 as being the most fun multiplayer game this gen (ever).

Mostly due it being far more competitive than the Call of Duty games.

Gears of War (franchise) - Playing through on Insane with a buddy. I've played through both games several times, and I'll probably do the same with part 3. I've played a ton of multiplayer (Annex and Warzone) and Horde too, but the co-op is still the best part of this game.

Virtua Fighter 5 Online - It's the best fighting game ever made. Online. Easy.

Super Street Fighter IV - It's the second best fighting game currently available. Online. Easy.

Team Fortress 2 - Simply put, the single most FUN shooter I've ever played.

Halo: Reach - The shooter I take most 'seriously', if that makes sense. I explore every nuance of the combat, the armor abilities, the maps. It just feels so deep. I feel like a learn something new and experience something different every time I play it.

Burnout Paradise - Just so much to do, and so much fun doing all of it. The racing is fast and furious, the group challenges are cooperative insanity, and Criterion just kept adding more modes. Marked Man is amazing.

Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit - A bit more focused than Burnout Paradise, but still just as fun. Races are all about knowing the track, and nailing the competition, no need to worry about taking different routes. Beautiful, fast, awesome. Made the NFS franchise relevant again to me.

Modern Warfare (franchise) - For 6 months or so, COD4 was the ONLY game I played online. I was fully addicted. Now I find I'm pretty tired of the formula, but I can't ignore just how much time and energy I sunk into that game, and how much fun I had. Spec Ops ensures that Modern Warfare 2 stays in my 'recently played' pile forever.

Assassin's Creed Brotherhood - Another case of a game owning my life for a relatively short time. My addiction to the game has faded since I hit level 50...which I guess (sadly) validates the whole prestige system in CoD, but I still throw the game in for some matches of Manhunt or Alliance with some buddies. Such a cool, unique, satisfying and laugh-out-loud fun game.

SSF2HDR - this was my introduction to playing a fighting game online
SSFIV - countless hours wasted on this
Lara Croft - one of the best co-op experiences I've had
Mario Kart Wii - the best online game on Wii
Gears of war 2 - had a blast playing co-op with a friend

Future online games
Diablo 3
Marvel VS Capcom 3
Mortal Kombat
Twisted Metal
LittleBigPlanet 2 (still haven't bought it)
Uncharted 3
Ratchet All 4 One
Journey
Gears of War 3
BattleField 3
another FPS games (either COD or Resistance 3)

seems the future is bright for online games, tons of variety
