Was curious about older Metacritic scores after looking at the necrobumped Gen 7 thread and Gen 5 seems as far back as it goes and the Gen 5 95+ games are a weird bunch, lol. No Mario 64, Final Fantasy VII, or Saturn games at all. I was shocked to see Tony Hawk as the top PSX title.

Not impressed by that list though Half-Life and Baldur’s Gate II would improve it if PC games were included.

Racing and fighting are not for me so I’ve never played Tekken and Gran Turismo. But I voted for Majora’s Mask. There was nothing memorable about that game for me.

Zelda Breath of The Wild - I don't know why DA:I got the scrutiny for locking progression behin boring tasks, BOTW does the same but its called Zelda.

Mass Effect 2 - Turned one of the most promising gaming franchises into a dude bro shooter like Gears of War.

Uncharted 2 - Another mediocre cover shooter that i didn't like back in 2009 and never understood the acclaim this thing got.

Skyrim - Action RPG with absolutely mediocre story and gameplay, i spent 15 hours in this game, it was 15 hours too much.

Metal Gear Solid 3 - This game is pure cringe and mediocrity, yes MGS 1 was already silly but that game had and certain elegance regarding not pushing things too far, the writing and VO was also on point. MGS 3 has a poor man's snake with a lifeless performance from its VA, bad escort mission, the COBRA unit is shit, Volgin was like a Street Fighter character, the level design was just a bunch of green corridors, etc. Its another game that i'll never understand the praise.

I think THPS2 was kind of boring. The first THPS is a classic and the most enjoyable skating game of all time imo

But I didn’t see what the big deal was with THPS2

My ranking of those:
1. Majora's Mask
2. Ocarina of Time
---
3. THPS2
4. Tekken 3
---
5. Perfect Dark
6. GoldenEye
7. Gran Turismo

(Category 1: I'd rate them above 95 as well; category 2: Great games, but I would rate them in the 80s; category 3: I hate them)

I didn't personally love Perfect Dark. Games were expensive as hell back then and it was some hard-earned money having a job during high school and trying to juggle friends and girlfriends and stuff like that.

Maybe it was just the times, as I was just starting to drive myself around, I was doing new things, ect. So spending like $70 or $80 of after tax cash for the game and expansion pak combo when making maybe $6/hour and it could have gone to something else I was doing maybe made me more critical or something. But what I remember about it was thinking it looked kinda ugly and was a little boring. I preferred Goldeneye.

All great games. This is like picking your least favorite child. So I guess Perfect Dark, came late enough in the gen that it was hard to get friends to come play and recapture that GoldenEye experience.

I have zero interest in any of those games.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Unlike the Gen 7 poll, none of those really stand out as being weak games at the time. Though the shooters have aged horribly. My least favorite at the time and now is Perfect Dark, which was basically Goldeneye with less charm and like 7fps.

GT I guess. Although I don't consider any of these bad and am especially fond of all the N64 games listed.

I would say the gameplay in Perfect Dark and Goldeneye 007 also didn't age well. Meanwhile I can still play a game like Duke Nukem 3D or Quake 1 without any issues.
Duke3D/Doom/Wolf3D on consoles are still great games with lots of fun, but i couldn't play Quake, Perfect Dark or Goldeneye anymore. In my opinion early 90s fps are still very enjoyable.

Wow your order and breakdown almost totally mirrors my own opinion although I'd stick Tony Hawk in the 90+ category, but not a 95.

Judging them strictly from when I originally played them, Perfect Dark would be the weakest for me. THPS2 is a masterpiece and absolutely belongs at the top with OOT. The best in the series.

All classics but i would guess that Gran Turismo is probably the least playable at this point.
I don't know, I played Goldeneye two weeks ago, and the framerate tanked to desperate levels almost everytime (PAL game/console might be making it worse) , it might be more arcadey and quicker to play than Gran Turismo, but on the controls' reponse time it lacks a lot.

Goldeneye was the COD of it's time. If it wasn't for the multiplayer aspect of it, it would just be another mediocre shooter.

Easily Perfect Dark for me. I can usually deal with most technical issues and even low frame rates, but Perfect Dark's frame rates were so low, it was practically unplayable I felt. I couldn't get passed the first level in the game cause of it. Im sure I would've liked it had the game run better, but I just couldn't get into it at all.

Majoras mask. I tried 2 times to play this game almost 15 years apart, but couldn’t even slog through it when I was determined to beat it a few years ago. Still have the save on my Wii U Virtual console at the 2nd to last dungeon.

I will never understand the hype for that game.

Other then that the rest of the list are amazing games, but as someone said above, I don’t think I could go back to the original Gran turismo anymore.

Never liked Goldeneye. I was a PC fps snob so it was very much a case of meh playing it off the back of Doom, Quake, Half Life, etc.

Hell, far as I'm concerned Exhumed on the Saturn wiped the floor with it at the time. And it still does for that matter.

My usual disclaimer of the piece of shit N64 controller ruining every game on that system stands too.
