Him taking the money and turning into an embittered asshole is such a cruel inversion of the plucky indie success story he used to embody.
Money don't make you a sexist conspiracy theorist, though.

What? He was basically attacking the concept of fictional role model because little girls should only look up to IRL people.Maybe, but if it was used ironically she would have been the final name in the list. Instead the final name was Cleopatra. I think it might have been just a random list, but it seemed pretty sincere.
The RLM guys will occasionally say things that make me wonder about them, Rich in particular. On a recent stream he was downplaying the impact of Wonder Woman because girls already had Ripley to look up to, which kind of rubbed me the wrong way. Jack seems like a pretty cool dude, though.
It doesn't do anything, just confirming that they don't get a pass. I'd be interested in hearing how it hurts me though, that's a new one.
"otherwise good people" lol
There was also a weird amount of Diversity back and forth in the Plinkett review for The Force Awakens, likening it to Studio mandates and corporate political correctness. I love them for their cynicism and knowledge, but the RLM crew are definitely Showing their age.
Did you watch his Star Wars Force Awakens review? They went on a tangent about how diversity doesn't matter and falsely claiming that no one really gives a shit. The rest of his review also feels strangely out of touch and behind the times.RLM haven't gone full milkshake duck yet, but they've definitely got the ice cream ready to go.
They don't see minorites as subhumans and they think that was good enough for them. Any demand to change for the better seems to be asking too much for RLM.RedLetterMedia is so frustrating to me. Because they're clearly attuned to things like racism and sexism on a level that is frankly more than I expect from most white dude youtube critics. Like you can hear them genuinely react at awful stuff in movies they watch that I would totally expect others to shrug off.
But then they have their weird "representation apathy" thing and Rich makes comments sometimes and its just...ARGH
I just want them to be better
I have a feeling Dunkey is gonna be the next big one. He's already slipped up once and with his immense popularity now I feel like it's only a matter of time.
Adam Baldwin. Adored him in Firefly. Then he got weird.

The thing is, they were handling the Ghostbusters thing just fine before Mike went and did that Scientist Man thing. The joke trailer reaction Jay put out was great, and the Half in the Bag episode was mostly fine. The issue was done and put to bed. Then, they went and made that conspiracy video on the controversy. Some folks here are saying RedLetterMedia are cool, but they made that one video speculating on conspiracy theories regarding the Ghostbusters 2016 fiasco while the cast and crew were still getting abused online for making the movie in the first place. It really soured me on them.
JonTron.

RLM have always been concerned with being ironically detached to a degree where it hurts their content. "ENDLESS TRASH" is the perfect example of this in how it spurns their responsibility to actually criticize as critics (safely filing away certain movies they're not interested in as "soulless garbage" as if it's impossible that even one person working on them cared about it being good. See also their recent Transformers stunt.) Not to mention that it's not funny, isn't even a joke, and with the amount Mike repeats it in its respective video, reeks of being a forced meme that only lives because of the size of RLM's fan base.
The truth is RLM hasnt been interested in doing actual criticism since the prequel reviews, which themselves have some questionable content. There's no point or insightful criticism to be made by having Mr. Plinkett review Cop Dog. Nobody at the RLM crew really gives a shit about Cop Dog or what they can glean from it. There's no statement to be made about how Cop Dog is secretly a pretty good movie and here's why we like it, or that Cop Dog is actually ideologically insidious, or whatever. It's just useless shitting on a movie nobody cared about.
Half in the Bag is what really killed RLM. When they realized they didn't have to do Plinkett reviews to stay relevant, they changed their entire format to criticism they could do thats equivalent to the conversations you have driving home from the theater. It's much easier to seem like you don't care about anything when you're not asked by your fan base to put thought into anything.

I give him a pass for that, but, I do not give him a pass at all for his 2002 arrest where they found kiddie shit and he explained it off as vintage art.Honestly, I give Paul Rubens a pass.

Orson Scott Card.
I loved Ender's Game and read most of the Speaker for the Dead and Ender's Shadow series. Then I found out about his ties to the Mormon church and his various anti-gay and other political views and it cast his books in a different light and took away my ability to enjoy them for what they were without constantly thinking of them as Card trying to push some kind of political agenda.
Did the Milkshake duck thing go from "this person turns out ot be a racist" to "they did a thing I didn't like once"
Wait, what did they do?
1) Earthworm Jim's TeNaple, 2) The author for Ender's Game. (How the fuck are you gonna pen a series of books about compassion towards those different than us, then outwardly hate people who are different irl?)
Orson Scott Card? That's going to put a damper on my read of the rest of the series.
God fucking dammit.Doug Wildey, the guy who is responsible for Johnny Quest. I met him at a con. I had an earring in. He asked me if I was some sort of queer boy.
Probably Tolkien and his casual-racism towards minorities in his literary works. Anyone described as having darker skin or a darker appearance is ally of Sauron and a servant of evil. I get that Tolkien was a white, upper-class Englishman who was born in the 1890's, and as such his views on race were largely framed by times in which he lived, but still, it's a topic that shouldn't be swept under the rug like many people would prefer to do.
I think like a lot of die-hard Tolkien fans, my first reaction when this was pointed out to me was denial. There's no way this author that I greatly admire held racist views! After all, The Lord of the Rings is about people of various races putting aside their differences and coming together! But over time, as my understanding of how racism can present itself evolved, I started to actually see what people were talking about.
I still love the Middle-earth Legendarium like it's my own child, and greatly admire Tolkien, but it's an aspect of his work that I don't think should be out-right ignored.
Christian Bale being an angry douchebag bummed me out. Seems like he chilled out in recent years though.
Pretty sure that was just that one recording though. To be honest, it's not even the most unusual stressful outburst albeit still a terrible thing to unleash on your co-workers.
Why does Brandon Sanderson get a pass when he is just OSC lite?Special mention has to go to all the hypocrites who claimed to be for LGBT rights who bought Shadow Complex and/or backed Armikrog on Kickstarter anyway despite knowing OSC/Tennapel's hateful views and connections to homophobic groups.
Nice lack of principles and solidarity from gamers keen to support milkshake ducks even after they've exposed themselves.

Really? He is probably the most discussed author on gaf after GRRM.Who?
Who?

He's like OSC's understudy.
You seemed quite upset at the community here supporting Card. Many here are. I just find it odd then, that fellow Mormon author Sanderson is still very popular. I didn't realize how little you know or care to learn.Never heard of him so I have no idea what his views are nor how he is getting a "free pass". I don't know why you quoted me to bring him up.
Oh, crap.L. Frank Baum
Creator of The Wizard of Oz
Called for the genocide of Native Americans
Easily Jon Tron.
Every time some bullshit like that comes out I just think about how devastated I would be if Kyle Bosman had some skeletons in his closet, but I doubt that'll happen because he just doesn't seem like that.
Yeah.Oh, crap.
The proud spirit of the original owners of these vast prairies inherited through centuries of fierce and bloody wars for their possession, lingered last in the bosom of Sitting Bull. With his fall the nobility of the Redskin is extinguished, and what few are left are a pack of whining curs who lick the hand that smites them. The Whites, by law of conquest, by justice of civilization, are masters of the American continent, and the best safety of the frontier settlements will be secured by the total annihilation of the few remaining Indians. Why not annihilation? Their glory has fled, their spirit broken, their manhood effaced; better that they die than live the miserable wretches that they are.
