Your predictions for Sonys and Microsofts next gen pitches?

I believe 2020,just so that they can make the console more powerful at a cheaper price point.

With that said I do not believe 4k, 60fps will make the next console sell, they need to focus more on performance and A.I which lets be honest is shit these days.
I believe we have reached a part where graphics are not the most important part anymore and the performance and fluidity needs to take first turn.

A.I. is even less of a priority, it's totally game dependent too. Unless you're talking about giving these consoles Alexa style assistants.

What do you mean by performance? A console pushing high resolution and high framerate is a console focused on performance.

You are right i suck at explaining myself, i meant they need to market the console in some other way, they cannot just say 4k and it will sell like hot cakes, they need some kind of innovation besides that, and i was trying to say that maybe the will market the video games advances like a totally brand new type of A.I or similar things.

I'd imagine Microsoft will be more focused on a windows powered steamboxish type thing that does everything from order pizza to wash your dishes... while PS5 will continue to focus on video games...

Xbox next-gen 2020:
next-gen begins again: November 2020, $499
Xbox One S becomes legacy platform(continues to get some games for a few years after next-gen Xbox launch)
Xbox One X becomes base Xbox continuing to get all the games. Xbox One X price after 3 years on the market is now the entry level console price of $349
next-gen Xbox launches at $499 with Ryzen mobile and 12 Tflops
plays 4 generations of games(Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox next-gen)
Xbox VR announced with Scorpio and next-gen Xbox support
First Party next-gen Xbox line-up on Game Pass on day one

PS5 2020:

PS5 launches at $399: performs between Xbox One X and next-gen Xbox
PS4, PS4 Pro and PSVR become legacy platforms
PSVR2 launch at $399
PS1-PS4 legacy games made available on PSN, PS4 purchases carry over but PS1-PS3 games you bought on PS3 will need to be repurchased
PSNow discontinued
Sony announces PlayStation "Instant Game Collection" a $100 subscription service which allows you to play PS1-PS4 games

in between xbox one x and next gen xbox is impossible in 2020. Sony needs a proper next gen machine in 2020.

I guess they could bundle it with PSVR2 and enough power to actually use it with adequate framerate and resolution. But I doubt the next gen will come in before 2020, just by looking at how long the last console generation lasted. And that was without mid-cycle refresh and pro/X versions.

Interesting. This is like all my posts about the PS5 in the last 6 months condensed into one! You say you work in the industry, could you elaborate/hint a bit more about this?
Just to be clear, the part that i heard from several folks in the industry (not Sony directly) was about the 2019 target date for next Playstation. However, that was about 1 year ago so it could have changed since. Everything else in my post about the target specs and smaller technical leap was my own opinion. However, I do have a master's degree in computer science with a focus on computer graphics and have previously worked for semiconductor companies and several gaming companies over the last 10+ years. So I would say that i know a bit about how all this stuff works and what it takes to make both gaming hardware and software.

It's very possible, all it takes is the next-gen Xbox being more powerful for PS5 to be between Xbox One X and next-gen Xbox. MS got caught with their pants down at the beginning of this gen, but when you look at the history Xbox has always been the most powerful console(including right now with Xbox One X vs. PS4 Pro).

Agreed, I think that's where the direction MS is going. I see in the future where Xbox consoles comes with a controller and M&K, also where we will see UWP games appear on Xbox and Windows 10 Store. We will see the Windows 10 desktop UI coming to Xbox and the Console UI coming to Windows 10. This means that PCs can become consoles running with the Xbox UI. But it also means that we will see third party consoles from OEMs running Windows 10 S/Pro with a Console UI. So basically Steam machines MS edition.

So in the near future UWP Games on Xbox will work on PC and UWP Games will work on Xbox.

This would indeed give Steam heavy competition on PC.

The more i think of it, the more i hope the steambox setup becomes ms go-to. Why complain about a $599 system when you could play it just as easily on a $299 system and still be in the same ecosystem. And perhaps some kind of upgrade program.

But i will definitely say they need to pick up their game on the exclusives front. Theres a handful of ps4 and switch games im excited for this year and so far only one xbox game. And it was delayed from last year and the last time we saw it, it looked pretty bad (referring to crackdown 3. I have no interest in SoT)

Having some 4k displays and a 144hz 1440p HDR display I would love to see consoles target 1440p 120 fps with the next generation.

I know this is another hole can of worms on another thread but to me 120 fps is a bigger visual upgrade as compared to 1440 to 4k.

I don't think we will see a $200 machine from OEMs. The most realistic will be from Microsoft with Xbox. However it's likely that we will be able to turn Gaming PCs into PC Consoles that can run Xbox UWP Games.

It's all about games as service and battle royales. They gotta come with big budget first party exclusives hitting those areas.

What....?
The all in one box approach worked out terrible for them.
If they do make the next xbox also a PC they will market it as a game console first.
Also the PC aspect could be done as an update, which they would more likely do so that launch can be about gaming.

2020 and they will call it the PS+5.0 and it will run the newest android OS Expoctus Failyrus.

Allows marketing to use FORD's new 5.0 2020 Mustang, subway's $5 footlong throwback, Taco Bell's new 50 Layer XXXL+ Burrito.
And a Superbowl commercial spot for the new Harry Potter / Cannonball Run mashup Harry Pothead: Contraband of Magics where Harry's estranged x-wife casts the Expoctus Failyrus spell on Harry, forcing him to smuggle magic mushrooms and other hogwart goodies across the globe, which is actually a flat plane now due to Donald Trump proclaiming planets are actually 2D holograms.
Due to R&D costs it will come with 0% backwards compatibility out of the box. For that you need to purchase a separate PS++ account and two internet connections with quadruple step authentication each time you decide to play. Don't forget to buy a backwards compatible memory card for that limited list of 33 games from the PS Vita archive, now in FULL HD 1080p.

It will cost .0005 bitcoin.

And if you think that's gonna be awesome just wait for the new XBox now called the X (√2)/12 × a³

Nah, it will be the PS5, but I do think 2020 will be when it gets released. Not sure about MS, it might be advantageous for them to wait since they just released the 1X not long ago.

History doesn't necessarily prove anything, xbox one is on the market from 4 years and is less powerful than ps4. We needs to wait and see what will happens, of course if next xbox will be out one year later than ps5 will be more powerful, but it will be not if it will be out in the same timeframe.

Japan has the Summer Olympics starting in July 2020 and they'll be pushing 8K pretty hard. I suspect that the PS5 debut will be at E3 a month prior to the start of the Olympics, focus on 8K and VR, have commercials during the Olympics and then pushed again at TGS just after the Olympics for maximum product placement. They will then release in Fall 2020 at $399.
You think next gen is gonna have 8K graphics? Your average consumer doesn't even have a 4K TV yet

One thing I have never found particularly useful myself, but think is an absolute necessity for both (especially Sony), is backwards compatibility with the current generation from the start. So many people have switched to digital that they will get very little trade value towards the next console compared to prior generations. And if you have no trade value for old games, and lose them anyway, the average person will have much less reason to stay with their current eco-system.

PS5 will be in 2020, and will sell for $400 with around 7-8 TF. They will release their VR headset promising a new generation of immersion. They also announce that their new "Vita" is their optional Switch Gimmick can play games on the go from the PS5.

Xbox Everywhere will launch at $449 in 202 with 9-10 TF with a 3 month subscription to Game Pass included. They will launch this with a wireless VR headset and a wireless headset that will replace your TV screen. They release an MMO VR "Microsoft exclusive" game that begins the age of future gaming.

It makes no sense for Sony to rush into the PS5, when the PS4 is in its stride. There are several huge AAA titles on the way God of War, Last of Us 2 and Red Dead Redemption 2 to name a couple. Sony has always done well by delivering the next gen after Microsoft starts the next gen. Owning all 3 major systems (PS4, Switch, Xbox One) right now as the target consumer who has pretty much every console and a huge collection, I'm happy with the current gen and dont see a need to start thinking about a PS5 or an Xbox wazzoo or whatever they'll call it until 2020 with a release of new hardware somewhere near 2021.

I would change having more exclusives for the Xbox One this gen as thats currently the console that gets the least amount of play with just me just basically playing Cuphead and PubG right now. Everything else is played on PS4 and theres some of the most fun exclusives on the Switch.

PS5 coming out will have little to no effect on PS4 or its games as others have said many times, CloudStrife_ca. GoW and RDR2 will have come and gone long before PS5 anyway and TLOU came out 4 months after PS4 reveal and as I remember it was one of the best selling games on PS3.

Sorry, I completely missed your reply.

Thanks for the clarification and I do think that 2019 is/was the target but there may now be a question mark over whether 7nm is viable/available and cost effect in time (mid 2019 at the latest for mass production start?)

It does raise another question, though. If they do have to pause for something out of their control what happens to all the involved staff committed to the program? Not just engineers for the HW but any devs working on games too.

Didn't Sony just have some major leadership swapping? I wouldn't be surprised if they tried something completely new this cycle -- I couldn't possibly guess what though.

You're right it may not have an effect on it, but myself I'm still content with being in this gen for another 2-3 years with the content I have to look forward too.

PS5 will be a beast. Hope it launches by 2020. My only concern is Kaz leaving the company and some key people also has gone from PlayStation.
Hope we could get 4K 60fps games with all the graphics bells and whistles.

Sad to think PS5 might be the last Mark Cerny console too. He is now 53 (same age as Andrew House) so might also bow out of Sony soon while on top.

It just has to be 8K capable for the marketing to matter. I'm sure most games will be 4K. The 2020 Olympics is targeted to be broadcast in 8K and both Sony and Panasonic are pushing 8K TVs for 2020 as well.
