On the differences in Nier said:
NIER in North America for Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 is exactly the same game as Nier Gestalt for Xbox 360 in Japan. The only other version of the game is Nier Replicant only for PlayStation 3 and ONLY in Japan. The only difference between these two versions is the main character. In NIER and Nier Gestalt Nier is a father saving his daughter while in Nier Replicant a much younger Nier is a brother saving his sister.

The stories are exactly the same, other than the main character Nier who is younger in Replicant. There are obviously some minor script alterations to make the dialogue work, but aside from that, the story, characters, gameplay and experience are exactly the same.

There are no plans to bring Nier Replicant outside of Japan at this time.

Kaine | Half possessed by a demon, she was born a hermaphrodite. When she was young she was often bullied, and began to show off her feminine side more but talks and acts rough like a guy. She wields dual large swords that cut anything in her way.

Nier | The protagonist. He treasures his only daughter, Yonah, greatly. Caught between his kindness and his sense of justice, his concerns over his daughter's illness lead him on his journey.

Nier (Replicant) | The protagonist. A young man who always has a dark expression on his face. He treasures his only blood-related sister, Yonah, greatly. When she becomes ill, he journeys far and wide to find her a cure.

Grimoire Weiss | A talking book who essentially acts as a companion to Nier throughout the game. Nier's magic spells are made possible by Grimoire Weiss who lends his awesome power to Nier. He holds massive knowledge about the world.

No.7 | A skeleton-like creature wearing a robe and wielding an enchanted staff, No. 7 is a demonic experimental weapon that joins Nier and his companions.

Yonah | A child who is treasured by her father/brother. She is a brave little girl who persists for the sake of her father/brother. Born weak by nature, she contracts the deadly Black Scrawl.

Things that you may experience/do while playing Nier:
  • Top-down viewpoint dungeon fighting
  • Side-on perspective inside town buildings
  • Platforming
  • Puzzle-solving
  • Fetch quests
  • Mash the attack button repeatedly
  • Dodge with the R2 button
  • Switch weapons in real-time via the D-pad
  • Cast glowing blasts of red energy in single or rapid-fire mode
  • Deplete your magic gauge which then automatically replenishes itself
  • Dodge forward to get to places quicker
  • Find "Words" throughout the world to change the characteristics of weapons and spells
  • Needless side quests
  • Multiple endings (including a continuation of Drakgenard's E!)
  • Move the camera freely with the right thumb stick
  • Face off against evil creatures and unleash brutal combat moves along with devastating combo attacks
  • Travel with a dynamic party of allies
  • Gather flowers, vegetables, fruits, grains seeds and create a garden better than Mama
  • Go fishing
  • Mount a boar and traverse the lands in style

Running off of Custom Firmware
That's a really nice OP.
But for those of us that haven't been following, why exactly are there two games if the West is only getting one? What's the deal with that? ARE they in fact different, or is it just a branding thing? Really been keeping myself in the dark about Nier(s).

That's such a good looking hermaphrodite
And this thread has now made me uncomfortable :(

C'mon reviews!

Gosh some of those pics really remind of Twilight Princess.

Oh wow you're right. lol the graphics.

So if you prefer Replicant you are someone who like incest, affraid of his own/lack of masculinity, a stupid person who prefer JP VA and don't like change since you can't appreciate something else than androgynous design?

That's some objective flowchart you have there.

Nose Master

I'm going to be so embarrassed if that girl character comes onscreen when I'm playing in the living room. Jesus. :lol Looks interesting enough, though. Lets see if S-E mucked up this one, too.

That's the weirdest version difference I've ever heard of. Is there supposed to be some kind of significance to it in the story, or is it just some weird attempt to get more demographics?

Second one.

or, How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Realize This Assgrab is Delicious
Square Enix could not be more naive in their attempts to do "western friendly" titles. This dual-style game just illustrates that even more. It's almost like they appear more stupidly Japanese when they're trying to do a western game

At least a Japanese title, that is okay with what it is, will sell to a dedicated audience who appreciates that style. The ugly man-beast wrestler will NOT appeal to the "average westerner" any more than the girlie boy will.

I find this whole thing rather insulting.

I wonder if you can tell if she has "it"...you know.

Never mind I don't want to know.

Hermaphrodite by definition has both male and female genitals. Dictionary, or wikipedia. ;)

Cmon guys we all know that dickgirl won't get the scenes she deserves.

That's what dojinshi is for. :3

Banking on Replicant being ¥1980 next week.

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
So getting this game...

Does Cavia have an incest clause in their development contract?

Wasn't incest a theme in the Drakengard games as well IIRC? :lol
Yes, between Caim and Furiae. It's incredibly understated in the American version, i.e., whole swathes of cutscenes were taken out that go into more depth with this.

Hail, peons, for I have come as ambassador from the great and bountiful Blueberry Butt Explosion
If I wasn't on a healthy diet that involved staying away from Cavia games, I would get Replicant.

I have no desire to play as Nick Nolte.

I just noticed the pics of dickgirl has no crotch shots. They're all butt shots. :lol

After watching the 2003 Hulk movie today, I fully support this Nick Nolte looking character.
