Youtube supporting 60fps uploads starting today (chrome only for now)

If you're using the latest Firefox nightly build I believe it's 60 FPS with the HTML5 player. I'm trying to get a framecounter to pick up a youtube video.

edit: I'm wrong, still 30 for us firefox plebs.

Can't see it and I've tried everything except desktop chrome. I've tried my htc chrome, safari, even the ps4 like I read here and nothing.

Edit: worked on the iOS YouTube app, still stuttered a bit but works.

I get some framedrops every few seconds, then it goes back to being smooth, on a 4670K. Bleh.
Weird. It was a smooth constant 60 on my smartphone. Embedded even.

Edit: hooray, finally I can quit watching quick looks on Giant Bombs terrible video player.

I think it's time for youtube to make "pro accounts" for uploaders. Pay a monthly fee and your videos won't get compressed to absolute hell. It would be great for publishers as releasing youtube videos only really destroys how their games actually look.

This.

60 FPS is great, but the quality of videos on Youtube is absolutely terrible. Which, when you think about it, makes no sense. Sure, terabytes of video are uploaded by the hour, but Google and Youtube have virtually unlimited finances, unlimited resources, and some of the best software engineers in the world. There is zero reason why the videos have to be so compressed to the point that even 1080p videos look horrible.

Just in time for some juicy Assassin's Creed: Unity launch trailers!

Someone probably made that joke already

Glad you guys are enjoying. :)

We actually have been accepting videos at 60fps for a while, just not playing them back at 60 until today.

And yes, this is available to anyone, its not a partner feature. 60fps for all!

But 30fps 720p is more cinematic

nice one. my macbook seems to load an eternity but it works. looks almost unreal because iam not playing it lel.

I'll capture some shadow of mordor at 60 and test it. I'm also partnered.
Thankfully it looks like you don't have to be partnered! :D

My most-anticipated update for YouTube. Thanks a bunch!

Just uploaded a test and it played back at 60fps eventually! Rather happy about this, I may actually start uploading gameplay videos to YouTube now.

Will you be re-encoding the videos that were uploaded at 60fps before today?

I uploaded a bunch of videos recently that were 60fps 720p Apple ProRes files. They are currently still 30fps. Is there any chance they will switch over or should I reupload them as mp4s?

THANKS!!!!

I'm assuming this will only apply to new vids uploaded from now on. So it won't retroactively change the current vids on there now. If anyone can correct anything, please do.

How about playback on iOS and Android?

This is huge. Maybe more gamers will start to appreciate 60fps when all their Youtubers upload videos of it.

And as a side note, people still use Firefox?

I wonder if there will be limits to file sizes, encoding, etc. with the 60fps implementation on YouTube. We all know 60fps streaming is gonna be hefty on their side and Gamersyde have their limits.

I just don't wanna go crazy with the bitrate settings, only to find out I can't upload the video.
Wait, are the MK8 highlights generated from the Wii U playing in 60 or people's captured recordings?
I'm not entirely sure, the one I posted on my channel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cg5v-RjS7FE) was from my own recording, using Avermedia's ExtremeCap U3.

As you maybe can imagine imagine, re-encoding all the videos on YT that are 60fps is a pretty massive undertaking. I'm not certain about this, but I believe we are re-encoding a subset based on view count..

Any new hd videos uploaded from now on that are 60 will playback at 60, however.

How about playback on iOS and Android?

YouTube app already does it on iOS, when the first videos were shown earlier this year in 60 FPS they worked but you need to hit the Quality button to choose HD 720p for it to work.

Any recommendation on bit-rate to use for the 60 at 1080p?
