One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
She just wants to make sure Eren eats her bread.

This is how the rumor mill starts and destroys lives. By idiots overhearing a vague conversation and never asking what is actually going on. Though Johnny does seem to have a thing for Orihime. More importantly, I'm shocked that the Dream students actually appeared. Random Dream students have popped up occasionally, but the main 4 have gone without a mention aside from Kii's Pon Pon Crepe stint. Not really excited to see them again aside from Kii, but they do deserve some sort of appearance I guess.

Even though I have many qualms with Kaiba, from the pacing to the comedy, I still would like to express my happiness that such a series was able to come to fruition in a world of copycat clones full of uninspired stories, dull characters and art that lacks any conviction, lacking any attempt by the creators to push the boundaries and test the audience, instead opting to give everyone what they want in order to appeal for the lowest common denominator. Kaiba is without a doubt a passion project, one that has successfully found an audience that it speaks to, and that makes me happy. So even though I didn’t enjoy Kaiba as much as I expected, as much as that pains me to say, the fact that it found love elsewhere has me at ease.

You should try watching Ping Pong or Tatami Galaxy next! I like Yuasa quite a bit, but I find that I enjoy his adapted works much more over his original works. It's not that I dislike his original works, because I feel that they tend to display what I'd consider Yuasa on full throttle, but I feel that the writing in them is more of a vehicle for the art and animation. Which is fine, but it's hard to digest an entire series of that. Even then I think if I wanted to show someone unadulterated Yuasa, I would probably point them towards Kick-Heart or his episodes of Space Dandy and Adventure Time (not pure Yuasa but it's close enough). But if I just wanted to show someone a Yuasa show, I would definitely choose Ping Pong or Tatami Galaxy, because the animation aspect serves to compliment the strong writing, rather than it being the main showcase.

Kind of a weak drama honestly. The action ones are the best for their crazy stunts. Naoto and Johnny's commentary saved it though. Come to think of it, Naoto hasn't been in a drama I think. That needs to change.

So they're bringing back Aikatsu 8. Meh. The last one came and went like a fart in the wind. No lasting effect like Star Anis had, which affected the rest of the season, and the show to a lesser extent. Granted Aikatsu 8 was filled with meh Dream students, boring Mikuru, and, a Mizuki I was tired of, so if the new one has a decent amount of the current solid cast it might turn out better.

Kokoro Connect really took me in by surprise, I didn't expect it to be that good as a character study, I guess this surprise is partly why I found it incredible. As for the 'established tropes' you mentioned, I'm entirely not sure I get what you're saying with that, care to elaborate?
It's been a while and I have the memory of a goldfish so please bear with me.
IIRC my problem was that every situation's resolution ended up being a happy one. At some point the sense of danger of friendship and relationship being torn apart was lost and in their place we got your generic friendship always prevail. When you do something bad you should expect something bad to come back at you. If there are no meaningful consequences it becomes predictable and less interesting.

I really hope I'm remembering things correctly...

Never been a fan of episodes like these that approach famous historical figures as if they were the characters in the show.

Cosmic Cycler got taken away from me before it was time.

Angry Grimace

Two cannibals are eating a clown. One turns to the other and says "does something taste funny to you?"
Having flaws is one thing but this one is to the extreme.

She can't live without Eren, her sole purpose in life is Eren, everything to her is about Eren. Hopefully before the series ends she can overcome this.
That's because she doesn't have any character development to speak of.

Himouto! Umaru-chan

Episode 7

Fun episode as always, although I don't expect much story from this show I do like how they explain why the brother puts up with so much of his sister's shit because of how
she's a splitting image of his mom.

Animator Expo: Endless Night

This looked good, I can't say I liked the music or have any experience with figure skating but eh, you can't win them all, It was still really pretty so I can appreciate it.
-----------------------
So how do these animators earn their pay, do they get hired by these Animator Expo guys? Is it something they do for free just for their love of their medium? I mean, with all those horror stories about the anime industry I'm a bit curious where these guys get their money from.

Edit: I looked a bit on the site and I found this:
Original projects, spin-off projects, promotional films, Music PV, and VJ Films etc...
Various omnibus animations produced with love and energy, regardless of any genres.
The digital distribution anime series bring opportunities for project development, R&D, human resources development, and free production under limited period and budget, to explore the possibilities of future film production.

I guess Studio Khara and Dwango just give everyone who wants to make a short some money, that's nice of them.

Finally, some sharp edges in this. Kudos for no cop out. Also - some delicious gore, I like this Valkyrie girl already. Of course all this took only like 5 minutes at the beginning an end of the episode. The rest was spend on claiming mc's virginity and the like.

I'm not gonna lie here, I actually found this enjoyable to watch.

Don't get me wrong here, it has a lot of problems like:
- Heavy reliance on knowing history of nobunaga prior to watching (This causes a few problems in terms of world building for ignorant people such as myself)

- Really fast (and poorly) paced starting episodes keeping the audience confused about who specific characters are and their relevance (which actually also stems from the above issue.)

- The sequel-tease at the end even though there won't be one.

- The
kiss fake-out at the end
thing needs to die from all media ever. shit sucks.

- there are a few times where a scene or sets of scene don't work with the tone of scenes around them like
when the MC basically boob grabs someone to not kill someone else.... (i thought that was stupid)
and
the takoyaki contest thing.

That said I really liked stuff like:
- The character designs are actually quite nice, and outside of 1 or 2 character there isn't much titillation going on. I particularly liked the art direction for characters as well as eye design.

- Since there isn't a reliance on fan-service, the MC's "loli-harem" is played more for laughs or story progression rather than anything else and works pretty well.

- The fact that the MC actually does meaningful stuff, and isn't a spineless MC you tend to see from a show similar to these.

- There's a really good use of show don't tell in this anime sometimes. No one's age is ever said, but you know the MC is in highschool because of his uniform, and some later scenes where subtle hints in the art tell the whole story which i really appreciate. I also really liked how Nobuna's retainers are never given ages attached to them, outside of the loli ones, you often get an air that they are at least a few years older than he is.

If you're worried about the term loli-harem i put in this review, don't worry. That's never really the focus of this anime and it's not done the same sexualized way that other anime seem to do.

I'm not sure i'd say i'd fully recommend this though, but it isn't bad by any means.
I'm sure some people would enjoy this one.

It makes sense but
I'm honestly okay with all of them being happy, the conclusion itself wasn't at fault specifically, it's how that ending came to be. As of now I don't immediately recall any of the arcs having a particularly unnatural/forced ending. It all came down to understanding/talking to the other person about what's bothering them and accepting them for who they are or self discovery. These are very powerful elements for a proper relationship. It's not that they didn't have any negative repercussions either, they did(weeks of hostility and anti social behavior or clashes between some of them) but they overcame them.

while i actually agree with you for the most part the first arc
literally had the antagonist go "nahhhhhh not gonna kill one of ya"
only time in the series that the ending of an arc felt weird compared to where it was heading.

Having watched it right after AoT, Black Bullet felt kind of same-y with its similar theme of edginess, despair and graphic violence, only it replaced do-nothing Eren with a walking power fantasy MC and was an imouto fest (that happened to kill some of them). Even the opening felt similar with the way it started and ended.

Today was me and my cousin's third random CR dinnertime, and we happened to get Miss Monochrome. It was okay, and definitely a lot better than the two shows we got on previous days (Fairy Musketeers and Hozuki no Reitetsu), in part due to having extremely short episodes (we watched the whole ED thinking it was the OP, and then the episode ended). We watched up to EP5, which took about 16 minutes in all since each ep was three minutes in length plus the ED, which we skipped after the first time.
Why do you skip the miss Monochrome s1 ed, her dance is so good.

It seems it's ramping up to something alright. I noticed differences, but I couldn't figure it out until I compared side by side. I feel like they want to tell us something!

a) They changed the animals to something not as cute and added more of it, it's also darker outside.
b)
Megu-nee face is wiped
, next shot is also fittingly changed
c) What used to be pleasant pictures are now something else. It's also more.. wore down I guess the word is?

But perhaps the most disturbing thing is in the ED!
Buckle up boys!

School-Live!

c) They pages look dirty and aged.

More opening changes. While I haven't screen capped these scenes in every opening there definitely is a change in the starry field toward the end. The best way to describe is it's transitions from a lighter themed vibrant blue toward a darker toned vivid red.

Starry field comparisons:

Episode 1a , Episode 1b
Episode 6a, Episode 6b
Episode 7a, Episode 7b

Despair is definitely coming.

Ok, at leasst Chiaki is recognizing her as a GF now, which is a step in the right direction. I guess he just has to learn to be more honest with himself and her about it, I mean, he did try to break up with her and got this out of it:

Great kick Nodame! Still love the music and tome of the anime, and Mr. Tsundere is turning over a new leaf, so things are moving along really well!

Just got done watching another two episodes of Space Cobra and man these two episodes were fun. Episode 13 is the first episode after the end of the first arc so it's a lot more relaxed and chilled. The rundown: A ship carrying a load of gold from Venus to Earth goes missing and as always Cobra has a hunch as to who's behind all of this shenanigans. The Pirate Guild. So Cobra and his assistant, Lady head off to Las Vegas Station, the manager of which works for the Guild as a boss. Of course being a Casino, Cobra wastes no time having a bit of fun, surrounded by cuties, one of which finds herself being harassed by some patrons. Cobra ain't having that shit, not on his watch. I have to say, the girl in question is a cutie, and super ditzy! I'm not usually one to care, but shows like this just know how to design great characters and babes which helps back up my connection I have with both Cobra and City Hunter. The 80's man, the 80's.
A great episode with some fun action, a baddie who is also fun in that 80's cheesy sense, and the babes are cute. Mokkori? Mokkori.

I think GAF would like Episode 14. It continues the trend of babes as a magical cutey finds herself on Cobra's ship after being followed by a powerful genie. Enamored by the strength of Cobra, he wishes to enslave Cobra and takes the ship to his floating palace where he runs his harem. I told you that you'd like it :p
The babes are cute, the bad guy is silly and the episode is just great fun, exactly what I want out of a show like this. Full of magic and flying carpets this episode is just great fun and I can't wait to see more silly episode like this. It's like this show was made for me! :p Also, this series doesn't mind having its cuties decapitated however which makes me sad, such waste! As a side note, the baddie in episode 14 is voiced by the late Junpei Takiguchi whom I'm hearing all over the place after watching Takarajima. I find that happens a lot! Voice acting is great in Space Cobra. Can't wait to watch more!

I agree about the first arc, since the whole
"one of you has to die"
thing felt like a diabolus ex machina to drive Iori into a corner and have her be more honest with herself, while the other arcs didn't threaten to do any of that and still managed to create some tension among the cast and finally have them open up to each other to get over the issues they had.

The fact that things always ended up alright is because the show's theme is basically that understanding yourself and others (connecting your hearts, I guess) leads to healthier relationships. Even if things always ended up well, there was some serious tension like when Inaba had to accept the fact that she also liked Taiichi, or when Iori's genki girl mask was forcibly torn away and she began to distance herself from her friends as a result.

Why do you skip the miss Monochrome s1 ed, her dance is so good.

Because for every three episodes we skipped, we got to watch another full episode instead. Besides, the dance is okay but it appears to be a perfectly mo-capped dancing girl with that oversized anime head superimposed, which treads a bit too close to the uncanny valley to be enjoyable.

We laughed about the prophetic dream because of the awful Fairy Musketeers episode we had watched the day before, but it was cool that the show quickly turned out to be a comedy as the little girl who ranted about being on Monochrome's debt asked for 19.5 billion yen to help her become and idol and just ran away with it.

What makes the show even more funny is that it basically hangs a lampshade on a couple anime tropes per episode, which would actually be funny if only said tropes weren't played straight so much in regular shows.

Since he and Vegeta can become Super Saiyan God Super Saiyans, it stands to reason that there will be second and third transformations come the third arc of the series.

Nah, Toriyama said that SSJ2 and SSJ3 are just wastes of power after training with god ki. There'll probably be more transformations, but they'll have their own unique weird names, rather than SSJ2/SSJ3 again. Even putting aside that statement, SSJ2 is very unlikely to come back since Toriyama and Toei both were pretty bad about consistently differentiating it from SSJ1 anyway.

tumblr_llegsoR9t81qbgt0zo1_500.gif

This gif is from the first couple episodes, but it was still one of the funniest moments of this season of Nodame Cantabile Paris. Overall, I appreciated the character developement and tone change in this season compared to the first, especially when it comes to Chiaki and Nodame's relationship. Chiaki is finally backing down from his Mr. Tsundere princess attitute, acknowledges Nodame as a girlfriend and actually makes a move on her to take a kiss. They did this by keeping consistant to the themes from S1 and manages to make it feel completely normal developemental and not a forced action. Excellent season for sure, but let's see if Nodame can realize her dream (since she has ut in a ton of work playing and have made huge strides) and get to play with Chiaki in a concert in the final season.

Thanks for the comment. I actually have Tatami Galaxy and Ping Pong on my shelf so I will get around to watching them soon. Kick-Heart is also something I'll check out, the whole thing is available legally on vimeo right? I never backed the KS. It's unavailable in my region but I could probably get around that. Never knew he did some Adventure Time, but that seems like a match made in heaven. I really wanted to like Kaiba but the whole thing fell flat for me, from the music to the characters and pacing. I think it is one of those love it or hate it shows as most people can't stop praising it. What I find funny is even the people who praise Kaiba talk about how they were originally put off by the visuals, which I find crazy since the visuals are what attracted me to the series, but then again I thought the same of Aku no Hana. Thanks again.

The biggest amount of despair in this episode was delivered by the new haremite stealing mc's first kiss ...

You'd think the NERV guys would have learned from evangelion that cryptic, sitting in chairs overseers always get betrayed by the guy they oversee. Maybe because they're always terrible at actually overseeing and controlling their gendo's.

Yeah its probably a toss up between Tatami or Ping Pong, I guess Tatami Galaxy is fine to start with. I was really hyped for these two but after watching Kaiba I have a sneaking suspicion that I won't like them at all, but maybe it's a good thing that I don't go in hoping for the second coming of Jesus like they're hailed to be :p

Ushio and Tora Episode 8:

I gotta say Tora getting excited for the plane ride was probably the funniest thing I have seen all season and I see this series is taking the Jubileith approach to building up the Big bad of the arc or the series. Not sure what to make of Yuu yet, she seems like she either is going to be a major potential love interest or somebody that the pair just met for the week and will never appear again.

They're going to meet again, there's even a line directly foreshadowing it.

Kyoukai no Rinne

Episode 20

When Sakura's mother started talking I immediately recognized her seiyuu as Fumi Hirano. She did/does the voice of Lum from Urusei Yatsura which is an earlier work also by Rumiko Takahashi.

Not only does she provide the voice but you'll notice by the picture that Sakura's mother also has green hair and her apron has the kind of tiger striped pattern just like Lum has. A neat little nod and cameo to another Takahashi character/work.

Otherwise it was kind of a fun episode with Rinne's antics on trying to be alone with Sakura. I also really like Ryohei Kimura as Tsubasa and his energy as far as Tsubasa getting excited or jealous and whatnot (usually involving Sakura, haha).

What really?! I really didn't notice the voice, going back in the episode to check this.
But the highlight of this episode for me was Rinne's deadpan skipping.

To Love Ru ep. 22-END

Another checkbox done on my list today. I needed to clean up all of these series with just a couple episodes left. The last few episodes of ths series were pretty good as they linked together a coherant story rather than being completely episodic. As expected from a harem anime, the very ending was pretty lame and, of course, nothing was settled, but hey, I think they are still in the same spot with this anime 3 seasons later. I see there are a ton of special episodes and OVAs after this season, are any of them worth watching? Despite the lewdness of this series, it really wasn't that bad, I'm just not a big fan of the "episodic" approach they used, where there is noreal story at all and they just keep throwing different side stuff at you throughout the middle episodes of the season. Oh well, time to finish something else now...

Ushio and Tora 08

Pretty entertaining episode, I am liking seeing Ushio and Tora's teamwork slowly and slowly develop, like how Ushio passively-aggressively told Tora to lift the airplane.

Sinister 2 or I Went In Expecting A Comedy, But All I Got Was Frustration

Everything about the film was bad. The acting was bad, the dialogue was bad, the scares were bad, the sound design was bad and the plot was contrived and bad. I was hoping it was going to be so bad it was funny, but it couldn't even get that right. This is the only time in recent memory I've gotten that annoyed at a film.

The adverts before the film were scarier than the film itself

So, I've finally finished the 2nd Lupin series. I'll post my full thoughts on it later. It's a really uneven show though, with some episodes that just bored me while others were really memorable.

Darkness has a stronger focus on a main story, but also much lewder fanservice and some stories entirely focused on that fanservice, without even attempting to disguise it under bad humor anymore.

Ushio to Tora 8

It's always hilarious when a character actually falls for very simple reverse psychology. Ushio and Tora keep having the best tsun tsun relationship. And what's this? New waifu get? I applaud them for being able to once again have a throwaway monster as they're going to to the main arc haha.

So recently I'm starting to learn that I don't tend to like floaty/speedy fighting sequences over those with weight to them. Animation where the people fighting are as light as a feather and can throw a million punches in a 1 second span doesn't do that as much for me as somebody who has to consider every move. Similarly characters who break through concrete and other hard surfaces like nothing and proceed to float in the air and swing a sword like a toothpick. No moar plz.

Neon Genesis Evangelion Blu-ray Box / Archives of Evangelion remastering process:
Since the Eva Blu-ray is out in days, I thought that I read up on it a bit. The project itself took over 5 years, starting in 2010 with a year being spent on color correcting and many other little fixes, with the assistance of Anno and his instructions. The project itself was done by Sony PCL Co, the same people who did the 2003 Renewal of Evangelion DVD set. At 5 years, the Eva Blu-ray set is probably the longest they've worked on a single project. Overall, they spent around 10x longer on Eva than any other series. Sony PCL Co received new equipment around the announcement of the Eva Blu-ray and have made use of the new equipment.
Speaking of which, the last telecine was also done back in 2003 with the release of the Renewal of Evangelion DVD set, and even though the color and such was worked on with that release, the technology has changed a lot since then and thus more improvements were made for the move to HD. The biggest change to the 2003 DVD release was the 5.1 audio. Not only has the telecine technology improved vastly since but the television sets themselves that we use to watch our shows on have changed too so all of this had to be taken into consideration when getting the colors right. During those 5 years they cleaned up the film, removed dirt and scratches and such. They used the detailed list of changes King Records documented with the 2003 release when working on this set. In the end they made around 600 instances of fixing the picture where they missed the last time back on 2003, but since this was a new master, they also had to redo all of the previous fixes that they did do on the 2003 DVD set.
The show itself is 16mm while the OP and ED are 35mm. During the development of the 2003 DVD set, the original 16mm negatives for Episode 16 (including the preview segments) were lost, and so they had to remaster the episode using a 35 mm internegatives. This time around they utilized a new up-converting technique called 'Real Scaling for HD' for Episode 16.

They also encountered many other little issues, for example in Episode 9 (Moment, Heart, Together | Both of You, Dance Like You Want to Win!) there's a timer in the bottom corner during the final fight, however this timer wasn't included in the original film so they had to go back frame by frame and add it. Being film, a lot of the texts and such were cel overlaid.
One of the biggest problems they had was funnily enough Ritsuko's eyebrows as they couldn't get the color right, so they actually had to consult with King Records, Gainax members who worked on the series and Anno on whether or not to change or fix things. Ritsuko's hair color changes in the show but the eyebrow color stays the same. They found that when looking back, sometimes her eyebrows on the 2003 DVD would look more gold than brown so they wanted to get it right.
They also talked about how neither King Records or Tokyo TV knew which tapes were which when inquiring about the original broadcast version, however a Sony PCL member had VHS copies of the original broadcast including the commercials and bumpers and so they used them as comparison. The new DVD set includes the announcers and sponsors (commercial bumper) that appeared back on the TV airing, but not the commercials themselves.
"Then again that's what we were trying to produce. 2-3 years prior we would have given up due to technical limitation and now there's hurdles of time and cost. Yet as an engineer you don't really want to say that something's not possible, especially when you know that it can technically be done. So ultimately it was a question of spending a whole lot of time on it".

"It's a really detailed anime, so there were many things that had to be done by hand. Some parts we did five times over. Things like newspaper articles really add to the setting and they should be much more readable this time around."
