@Eccocid - that HDR shot is amazing. If I loved New York, I'd want your picture as a poster on my wall. Could you go to Ft Myers Beach or Montreal and take some pictures? :lol

Cool photos of NYC. I really need to go back soon. I was looking through my old NYC photos recently. I've only been once and that was before I was into photography. I saw all these amazing photo opportunities but I only had a 7 year old Samsung P&S camera with me. I did manage to take some good photos though:

Really into macro photography since the weather ain't that good and I'll be honest - I don't have too much time.

First time I've done some post processing on my pictures. Made them more vibrant, which (I think) really fits the easter theme.

@Eccocid I'm usually torn on HDR, but that's an awesome image.

You guys have a lot of great stuff. Wish I had more time to go out and shoot lately.

Some more from this weekend. Sorry for the smoking pics Squirrel Killer :p

Hello all!

I've been thinking about buying a REALLY good camera for a while. I've been looking at the Canon EOS Rebel XS 10.1MP DSLR Camera With 18-55mm IS Lens Kit. It's around 600$CAN, is it any good?

I really like the quality of Eccocid's photos and I've been wondering if I can achieve the type of image-quality he has....

Any help in this matter would be greatly appreciated!

All of my shots were taken with a Rebel xsi and the kit lens. I love the camera, great for a starter slr. I would also invest in a speedlight ($400) so you can do directional flash. just make sure you're shooting in raw and develop a workflow in Photoshop/Lightroom/Aperture.

I would get it. Some of us are still shooting with a Rebel XT (a generation or two behind the XS).

Every SLR can achieve fantastic results at base ISO, it just requires technique, equipment to facilitate its use and knowledge of the cameras and accompanied lenses weaknesses.

For sure, it's a fine camera, albeit excessively cheaply built in order to differentiate it from the more expensive entry-level Canons.

In that price range I've been more impressed with Sony's A330. More features, better build, better kit-lens. Then there's Nikon D3000 which goes for around the same price as the Canon XS/1000D. Very comparable camera with slightly better build and autofocus/metering.

Thanks, well i have a decent camera and 2 lenses which are the cheapest ones :p
But i shoot RAW most of them time and edit RAW images usually. I dont go so far with editing i just try to catch the atmosphere of the place when i took the photo. (usually the photo and real thing is different)

those kit lenses are decent i guess, well i still use it cant afford a better one but u should get 500mm f1.8 lens which should be less than 100 bucks. It's very sharp and can shoot in low light. well its not very wide angle but its the best money can afford i think.

Would like some advice on this photo I took today.
4v3cdc.jpg

I'm not sure what I need to do to make the photo crisper. This was taken on a cloudy day with a Rebel Xti and EF 50mm f/1.8 II mounted on a tripod. The flower blossoms look like a big mess in the trees and very scrambled/dirty, for lack of a better word.

Looks like it could use a small S-Curve adjustment (to bring out the highlights a bit) and some sharpening. As far as at the time of capture, nothing else you could do except possibly exposed the image a little brighter and/or stopped down the lens some more (not sure what aperture you shot the lens at, so I'm making an assumption on that aspect).

Other than that, I think its fantastic. Nice colors going on and the composition of it all is pleasing to look at.

I could process the image, if you want me too (just to show you an example of what it would look like with some adjustments). Totally up to you.

Edit: I went ahead and made this GIF that showcases the differences (if your uncomfortable with your photograph being touched up, let me know!). I just used the Curves tool in Photoshop to raise the Highlights and Midtones but didn't touch the shadows since the trees are already dark. I also sharpened 35% Amount / 0.4 Radiux with Smart Sharpen)

I think the biggest factor in taking shots like Eccocid is not a dslr or a good lens. If u have a point and shoot, try to take an evening shot 5-10 minutes after the sunset with a tripod. If the shot looks noisy try to lower iso set iso to 100. A dslr alone will not be able to just take good shots. You still need to be there at the right time and you likely need a tripod if you end up getting a rebel xt

Interesting, I appreciate the gif. Hopefully we'll get some better weather soon so I can try taking the photos again with different lighting and get a more interesting sky.

For those of you wondering what the heck RAW offers that JPEG doesn't, let me demonstrate. Of course the batteries died in my wireless trigger, so I didn't have the fill light I had planned on having.

Before:
829134242_aRCqQ-XL.jpg

After:
829128349_9f2cR-XL-1.jpg

Adjustments in Lightroom 2.6:

5 different brushes in various spots
+.5 exposure and +30 brightness on his face
+.3 exposure and +75 brightness on the top of his shirt to blow that shadow off
+.3 exposure and +15 brightness on her face
+ 47 saturation to his face to get some color back in
+ clarity and sharpness on the pup
cloned some junk out of the background
tweaked the tone curve
+.38 global exposure

This is a pretty good example of just how powerful RAW editing can be when you take a little time to massage the file. Hope this gets some of you guys on the RAW bandwagon =)

Impressive results, but wouldn't I be able to do most of this with a JPEG too? What kind of limitations would there be if you didn't have the RAW file in this situation?

You would hit noise and artifacts way sooner in your adjustments, because the data has already been so compressed.

Definitely, would look more dynamic with sunlight. Since that was taken on a cloudy day, colors will pop but you won't have that dramatic light (especially in the leaves). Usually on cloudy days I relegate my shooting to smaller subjects (flowers, rocks and other inanimate objects). With that said, your photograph is a prime example of what happens during days with diffused light, the colors really come out (the green of the grass and yellow lines).

Nice pictures. I think they capture the feel of the Pedway. Last time I was in there it wasn't finished yet and I got lost trying to find my way out. :lol

Ah... that makes more sense. I've been contemplating starting to shoot in RAW... I think I'll give it a shot.

Just be mindful of the fact that shooting RAW means you'll be processing every shot you want to keep :D

Not to be rude, but the XS doesn't belong in the same phrase as "REALLY good camera". It is a decent quality, entry level consumer DSLR. What does that mean to you, you ask? It's mediocre with low-light situations, smaller buffer = less pictures per second in burst mode, all plastic frame instead of metal alloy, smaller form factor can be uncomfortable for bigger hands.

Not that this is meant to discourage you, but even a 50D is a giant leap above the XS.

The most important thing to realize, however, is that the camera body is rarely the limiting factor; it's the lenses. The real money investment needs to go into quality lenses. The nice thing about investing in good lenses is that their resale value tends to go UP rather than down, so you can always divest without much of a loss, if any.

I got the Canon 50mm f/1.8 "Plastic Fantastic" lens today, and got a chance to try out the bokeh and glare in the sunset...

It's pretty dirty, just the way I like it. This makes a fine addition to the Sigma 30mm f/1.4.

Not sure what GIMP is but definitely! Maybe you need yours in a different res to get rid of jaggies?

Still working on my composition, but I really like how these shots came out. Taken with my new D5000.

Having purchased the Digital Rebel XS after a good bit of research, I'd like to disagree. It's High-ISO performance is quite good for the price range. Take a look here:
http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/nikond3000/page23.asp

Additionally, for general use, it's a perfectly good camera. It has an acceptably good sensor, it's ISO goes up to 1600 - fine for many situations, and supports exposure bracketing. What it doesn't do, compared to the higher end budget Canons, is:
* Microadjust for lenses (if your lens focuses behind or in front of your focus target, this would allow you to correct that)
* Large number of AF points (The 1000d only has 7, which is a bit limiting, but it's not killer)
* Spot Metering (1000d only supports Partial metering, which is good enough for many situations)
* Large Burst Shooting (1000d only does something like 6 raw images in burst, so if you're doing lots of sports shooting, this may be limiting)

It's a fine camera for the price. It's not exceptional, but it's good. If you're just getting in to photography, it's a great route to take.

Now, to contribute something to the thread! I made a trip to Georgetown, Washington DC, to try and get some interesting lighting. I think I was successful, though obviously I need a good bit of work on technique (and gear - lens hood would be nice).
