I really see no way Bernie runs (or gets anywhere if he does) in 2020, even setting aside his age (which would be crazy in and of itself). Yeah he's still popular from last year now...Hillary was super popular in 2012 no? I remember the cool-Hillary-on-her-phone-memes. 4 years later she's Internet Satan

There will be a new hotness in 2020.

Who said anything about the perfect candidate? The candidate should meet some minimum standards in terms of experience and belief in Democratic values. Manchin is OK on the former but fails the latter. Kander would be an example of someone who is fine on the latter but fails on the former. Frankly the "X is the only candidate who can defeat Trump" mentality is misguided. I'd love to see a scenario in which Joe Manchin is the only candidate who can beat Trump.

And yes, it does fucking matter that the person we elect actually be able to do the job decently unless you want to end right back in the same predicament four years later and/or make no progress on actually fixing the damage Trump is doing.

I'm guessing that Team Trump may have found out that one's of the Press's IC sources from an already released IC story was actually a foreign IC source.

One hand that worries me because that possibly means that Team Trump has started to figure out who some of the leakers are.

On the other hand I think it's just feeding into Team Trump's paranoia to find out that they have to wary of NATO intelligence watching in on them too.

Let's be 100% real. Since we already had Obama, it's not gonna be easy for any of these white candidates to shore up any significant sector of the black vote against actual black candidates. And these are black candidates with extensive ties to civil rights. Unless Booker and Harris drop out before the South, it's gonna be really fuckin hard for all these white dudes and Hillary 2 to get the black vote.

Gilibrand is awesome and all but let's be real here. It's not just identity politics when Booker and Harris were the only ones going around saying Black Lives Matter when it wasn't always convenient.

Last month she paid a surprise visit to NYCHA but never actually entered a NYCHA apartment.

During the May 5 visit, she asked to see a community center that had fallen into disrepair at the McKinley Houses in the Bronx. NYCHA Chairwoman Shola Olatoye said the agency staff who escorted Patton said she was “less interested in the actual infrastructure and more interested in an old clipping of the community center that was all glass and steel and now is struggling.”

“I think the reaction was surprise, maybe a little bit horrified,” Olatoye said.

So Matt Yglesias thinks this article about Kushner being under investigation is what the DOJ release was referring to:

The end of the first paragraph says "according to U.S. officials familiar with the matter," but an earlier version of the story only said, "according to officials familiar with the matter."

So probably Kushner, Trump and Ivanka freaked about the story and made them release the statement and the Post updated the article in response to the nitpick.



Oh, also announced today was that Tim Canova will be running against DWS again.

These are the kinds of minor critiques that can be leveled upon pretty much anyone who has been in politics for any length of time. That's why charisma is important.

Also candidates like Harris, Booker, and Gillibrand have large home states/regions. Add in delegate-rich states like Georgia, Texas, and Florida in the South and candidates without appeal beyond rural areas get left behind.

I mean, maybe I'm not paying attention, but who is the young, charismatic and prominent white male politician who could run in 2020? It's not really exclusion if there aren't any ready for prime time. Chris Murphy? Has he been making any moves to indicate he might run? Has he grown a personality in the last few weeks?

I'd be all for a white guy, but Democrats really need to start prominently factoring in personality and charisma in who they run, because more than policy THAT is what wins elections. And all the Dem heavy hitters in that department at the moment are all women and minorities.

Mayor Pete is quite the charmer, but he won't be ready for prime time by 2020.

It's not really yearning at all. I just think Sanders will run. It isn't crazy speculation. And I don't think people should just assume because he's old that he won't

I just think it will come down to him and Harris because they both seem to want it the most where as others seem like they are content remaining senators.

Just replace Hillary with Harris and O'Malley with Zuckerberg and I think that'll be our debate stage a week before Iowa probably

I like Murphy and Harris.

Most people are looking at him as outsiders, but O'Malley is so hated in Maryland that they (as one of the, if not the, most Democratic states in the Union) elected a Republican as governor after him. It's not flashy but a lot of the early moves in a race are about building up a good starting base to work with, but O'Malley would be lucky to recruit anyone from Maryland to just not spit on the guy.

He's got no chance nationally.

Edit: And all of this is to say that he knows that so I doubt he'll try again (unless it's for the same reason he ran this past time, to angle for a job in somebody else's White House).
