I don't think adding the option to take cover and shoot is a bad thing, but at the same time the way the previous games were set up you weren't supposed to be getting into full on gun skrimishes to pop shot people.

If the A.I was super smart and rushed your cover and flushed you out non stop if you tried to do it, then it'd be fine.

Really though this better not come to fruition. :( SquareEnix is singlehandedly ruining the game industry. :lol

This is new and I´m excited!

Wait, this art looks horrible, cover based shooting parts sounds horrible and everyone involved on management level should feel horrible.

Seriously, what the fuck is with all of these reboots? Not only do they seem unwarranted simply due to the amount of them, but most of them do nothing but anger longtime fans. A cover system and emphasis on firefights in a Hitman game? What?!? I'm having flashbacks to the Columbia section from the first game...D:

And hasn't the Hitman series been doing pretty well? I mean, when games were actually being released and all. Or did the movie destroy the quality of the games?
a reboot is warranted in this case though. almost none of the people that made the hitman games are working for IOI anymore. take a look, http://www.reto.dk/retoweb/ -- company info has a list of names. that's almost all programmers and artists from the hitman team

codename 47 http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/hitman-codename-47/credits
silent assassin http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/hitman-2-silent-assassin/credits
contracts http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/hitman-contracts/credits
blood money http://www.mobygames.com/game/windows/hitman-blood-money/credits

the director on blood money also isn't with IOI anymore either. hitman5 was probably scheduled to be released in 2008, the previous games came out 2000 2002 2004 and 2006. but all the retomoto people left IOI in 2008.

retomoto are currently working on a battlefield style ww2 team shooter, with huge levels vehicles and capture points. it's launched and set up from a quite nice web interface, although I can't tell in the current alpha build on the server if the game will turn out good in the end. but it probably will considering the experience this team has got. it's still really early. here's the site for it http://www.heroesandgenerals.com/landing/index.php

Well, with action levels I guess they can use an excuse that it's going back to the roots of the series :lol

Anyone would think the game has come out and lots of people have played it from the amount of hate in here....

The game also contains elements [when] 47 [is not] on assignments. These parts are more linear and are firearm-focused, cover, etc.

Come on dude....that's like hearing that the next Gears of War is stealth based or something...It's not just tweaking the formula, it's a completely different genre that the game actually is.

Sounds to me like they don't want the K&L:2 work to be in vein, so they can base these parts of the game off that tech.

They only have to make 1/2 the amount of actual "thinking mans" Hitman levels with clever strategy if they can puff the game out with car park shootouts and the like.

This sounds more like Kane & Hitman...what's wrong lately with the "reboots" of the stealth games like Conviction and this one? instead of improving the mechanics, controls and most importantly the mediocre AI and focus on great level design they instead turn into cover-based shooters with dumbed down controls.

Last real Hitman left.

• Reboot the entire series and Agent 47

Yes because we get so many Hitman games I'm sure the fanbase was just screaming for a reboot! 47's appearance hardly looks rebooted (besides the awful stubble :/), hopefully he doesn't develop feelings or other such inane personality traits.

• Agent 47 now has stubble!

I hope they pull a sucker punch and change it if we bitch enough.

• Strong focus on story

Cool, I actually liked the story from the other games and always wanted more, level design comes first and foremost though

• 47's "assignments" are open missions [like] in previous games

Hopefully they're even bigger and more complex like 'The Beldingford Manor' or 'Traditions of the Trade' in Contracts, but don't compromise one for the other, 'A Murder of Crows' in Blood Money was huge, but quite possibly the easiest level to Silent Assassin in the whole series.

• The game also contains elements [when] 47 [is not] on assignments. These parts are more linear and are firearm-focused, cover, etc.

I honestly don't hate this idea as long as these instances are far and few between; it would be ridiculous to achieve Silent Assassin status in a level just to be in an all out gun fight once you complete the level. Hitman 2 and Blood Money had great ending levels where you absolutely had to guns blazing, so it's not exactly new. Also, the levels in Contracts where you're surrounded by cops that know you're there and are coming in after you were great, they provided an excellent mix of stealth and shooting, bring those back. Also, I think cover is a very welcome addition to the series, shooting was never the smartest thing to do and the controls did it no services, cover would help that. Just don't have all that convenient waste high shit like most games out there, over tables and around corners is all you really need.

• The game is developed parallel to the other Hitman movie

If the movie is good then that's fine, though the first Hitman movie did not capture the essence of the games at all so who knows how this will go.

• You will get to play as more than 47 during the game, including a female assassin

Diana? She (kinda) got her hands dirty for the first time in Hitman, so her being playable wouldn't be too surprising. It would be awesome if there are co-op levels with Diana and 47 working together, 47 would play like normal while Diana is more of a recon character, chatting up NPC's, seducing targets, charming her way into restricted areas, even changing into female disguises that allow her to go places and take on roles that 47 could not, all the while feeding information to 47. I'm not saying women can't kick ass and take names too, but if you having different characters with redundant skill sets is just a waste of time.

• David Bateson borrow again the voice of 47

Indeed, he confirmed this on his blog a while back. He should be in the Hitman movie, considering 47 is modeled after him and what not, but that would be too easy.

Please let this shit be fake. He looks awful and I dont want a reboot, we dont NEED a reboot. Hitman 5 should be about the agency tracking down 47 in Hong Kong.

Why the fuck is the game industry ruining every goddamn IP I loved.

Splinter Cell Conviction sucks, Mafia 2 could have been better, MP3 is a trainwreck and now this?

I'm so irritated.

We know a Hitman 5 is coming... but this shit don't sound like it'll top Blood Money. Let this info be fake, please, and let the real Hitman 5 be brain-meltingly awesome.

"Names are for friends... so I don't have one."

In principle, I'm all for a reboot given that I've always thought IO dropped the ball in the conception of the series by making Agent 47 a clone and all of the crap that came with it. I just think the concept is deserving of something more rooted in reality.

However, having said that, this particular reboot certainly sounds utter plops.

I hope this turns out but I can't lie. Those details and the new look for 47 seem awful. I'm really glad they are going to keep the open mission structure. I'm worried as always about the dumbing down of games though. Not sure what this "open structure" will translate to in idiot-proof terms.

Fact is I always considered Hitman the consumate professional and the cleanshaven look was a part of that image. Giving him a stubble makes him look like a guy who wants to be fake casual. Like he's going to wear his tie with the top button undone and oh so artfully slightly loose. 47 is a guy who gets shit done quickly and clinically not some ex-beatnik who wants to pretend he's still the cool guy because his poker buddies give him shit for being a square now. What the fuck.

If you change the character and add cover-based shooting I think you need to call it something else.

Any member of the PC master race can tell you that that isn't a reboot, it is a reformat.

How did I know that when I entered this thread, that when I saw the word 'reboot' that everyone who is a fan of <insert franchise here> would bitch about it no matter how good it looked? :lol

I never understood the appeal of Hitman series. Surely the levels were open which was nice, but it seemed to rely far more on trial and error formula than any other stealth game I can think of. It was too frustrating to me (played Hitman 1 and Blood Money).

Ofcourse it's trial and error.

The appeal is trying to finish all the missions without being spotted and without killing anybody directly :p.

Thats what open means.

That's because it was a murder simulator, not a shooter :|
Rez said:
it could be both!

Noooooo, its horrible. If you plan the game in this way, there is no point in being stealth. There is no real punishment or no drill by failing at stealth. Also the game takes option for the stealth part to support the shooter part, so it becomes more bland. Like MGS4. There are enough "compromise" games out there, because developer want to cover a bigger audience and its really just make the games blander in some part. =/

That's part of the appeal it catered to the more cerebral player. And made you actually think about your surroundings and how you were going to do your contract cleanly.

Getting a Silent Assassin rating always felt good.

Why?

Because saying this is "ala mode". It's probably profitable right now to say that in our lame buzz world era.
Back in the day, you were changing something in a game and it was only a "sequel" and that's all. Nobody was looking at it like a "reboot". So yeah, it's just the new Hitman game.

Hitman didn't need a reboot.

It was arguable that Devil May Cry and Resident Evil need/needed a reboot, but Hitman was fine the way it was.

Not a fan of the character design. Agent 47 was fine the way he was.
