Thankfully, owning Microsoft stock and being a shrill are totally different things. At least I think this shit is whack. This just begs the question, what other sites is Microsoft paying to promote positive culture and is it actually worth it for me to spend 250+65(collectors edition + controller)? on Titanfall or get the Wii U like I've been planing.

That's not the case, however. According to a leaked copy of the full legal agreement behind the promotion, video creators "may not say anything negative or disparaging about Machinima, Xbox One, or any of its Games" and must keep the details of the promotional agreement confidential in order to qualify for payment. In other words, to get the money, video makers have to speak positively (or at least neutrally) about the Xbox One, and they can't say they're being paid to do so.

This part here is so dirty, its pathetic. Especially when there were so many people in the other thread defending this promotion and saying there was nothing wrong with it.


You cannot say anything negative, you cannot disclose that you are being paid for the video AND not saying anything negative. This also all goes against the FTC rules and regulations.


This is going to hit the fan, big time.

I wouldn't be at all surprised to learn of such other MS "marketing agreements". Like maybe one with GameStop to push the Xbone down our throats every time we walk into that store.

Whenever I snap browse NeoGAF while playing the Titanfall alpha on my Xbox One all-in-one entertainment system for the 21st century I constantly see people that don't seem to be motivated by enthusiasm.

Eh... It is only Microsoft doing it. Sony and Nintendo don't partner with a major gaming network and promise money in return for undisclosed positive promotion for a console that will most likely not meet their sales expectations.

I don't doubt that other companies do it as well, but they're a bit more deceptive / the news hasn't filtered through.

I have both systems. I rarely look at reviews or previews and go by what the critics say. If it looks interesting to me, I'll buy it. While I can see the ethical issues as problematic, I really don't see it as a huge problem that would make me change my mind about a product. Companies pay to promote products in movies all the time for a lot more money....yes yes, I know this is more misleading, but again it is not going to change my mind about anything. Im sure if these media outlets dig deeper, they'll find more examples from many companies.

See we have problem with you using the word "faith". You could have said the same thing like this: "I'm sure MS legal department has not done anything illegal." Most of us would have agreed with you. But when you use the word faith we just find it so fuck'en bizarre.

When you are outside MS looking in you don't use the word faith. MS executives have faith in MS legal. Xbox owners should not have "faith" in MS legal.

Should we be raising an eyebrow at all of the mentions of the 2005-06 PSP faux marketing blog blunder?

Who gives a rat's ass about what Company X did 8 years ago? That was then and this is now. Nintendo's console business has risen from the ashes and crumbled into a deep pit in that amount of time.

Does Sony partake in shady shenanigans in 2014? Probably. But they're apparently more tactful than this rightfully called out blunder by MS & Machinima.

I'm actually floored that both Ben Kuchera and Arthur Gies have spoken out about how shitty and stupid of a practice this is. If you're still somehow trying to defend this, please read what I just wrote: Gies and Kuchera of all people are against this.

Feeling genuinely bad for actual fans of the console, they can't even mention the system anymore without getting hate. Great job, MS.

I thought this was a load of crap when I first heard it. Didn't really think MS would allow faceless, random people shape their message for them. Guess I was wrong. If you think about it though, it's kind of like an infomercial. Only an infomercial is legally bound to tell people they are paid actors. I wonder if the sites that are selling their opinions have to disclose this?
