Has there ever been a US release where the creator said 'but you can't translate it'? I know ones where the publisher was lazy(Exceed GBC 1, but Esper fixed that in no time), but not where the creator flat out stopped them.

I wonder if he has any legal grounds to stop them if they translated it anyway.

I know ZUN has a a lawyer or something to specifically handle IP problems and management, but I can't imagine how convoluted it can be since it's a doujin series.

I'm just thinking loud about precedences, but Japanese-only PlayStation games have also been released on the US PSN.

Translation is the overwhelming norm in video games, but as I understand, board games are frequently published in their original languages around the world, requiring players to find or produce their own translations. It seems more than half the files on BoardGameGeek are these fan translations.

That's an understandable grey area, since they'd have to be romhacked to be translated, not a fairly new PC game with (what I assume to be) readily accessible source code.

I figured you guys might wanna know that voting for the 11th THWiki Popularity Contest has started.

11th Annual Touhou Popularity Contest

http://thwiki.info/th/vote11/

NOTICE:
This year's poll allows voting for characters and music from Urban Legend in Limbo. Characters and music from Legacy of Lunatic Kingdom are not valid options.

Voting

Voting is done the same way as the previous years. Here is a graphical guide.

Voting will last from 00:00AM JST Saturday/Sunday (May 23/24) until Saturday (May 30) at 07:00AM JST.
Please refer to this site for the clock / time by which the contest is operating.
You can also see how much time is remaining directly on the site.
Format :
D 日 HH 時間 MM 分 SS 秒
D = days, HH = hours, MM = minutes, SS = seconds

Three categories are available for voting :

In the same order as on the site :
Character Poll - Vote for your (maximum of) 5 favourite characters. 2 points for the "first", and 1 for the other four.
Music Poll - Vote for your (maximum of) 7 favourite songs. 1 point for each of the seven.
Voter Questionnaire - Miscellaneous questions about the games, e.g. which ones have you played / 1cc'ed, which characters do you use, how did you get into Touhou, etc.

Here is a list of the characters and songs that you can vote for. The three first links send respectively to the list of characters, the list of songs, and a list of arranges that will count as the same at their original.

FAQ

General

Q. Why 'Touhou Series' and not 'Touhou Project'?
A. It's a tradition since the 1st contest.

Q. Can I vote from my cell phone?
A. It is not recommended, but you can vote from smartphone (iOS / Android).
There are times when a memory error will occur depending on your phone model. Please vote from a different location, such as a net cafe or a friend's PC, instead.

Q. Do I need to fill out the comment field?
A. Filling out the comment field isn't necessary.

Q. I don't have 5 characters (or 7 songs) that I want to vote for.
A. Vote for as many characters (or songs) as you would like, then leave the others unselected.

Q. Can I use pictures I've drawn on Pixiv, etc. as publicity images?
A. Publicity is welcome. In addition, posting with the hashtag "#toho_vote11" and "#第11回東方Project人気投票" is recommended. Registered participants can put a link to their work here (related to the contest).

Q. Can people outside Japan vote?
A. Yes.

Q. Regarding the voter survey questions on game clear status, aren't frame drop rates going to be included?
A. There are no plans to gather data that strictly.

Q. Will it be okay if I vote from the same computer as my siblings, etc.?
A. While it's impossible to say with 100% certainty that your votes won't be mistakenly judged to be duplicate votes, if you include the voting reason in the comment, it should be fine.

Q. I have no choice but to vote using a free e-mail address; will it be all right if I fill out the comment field properly?
A. As long as it's not a duplicate vote, there won't be any problem.

Q. Will the "highly favored vote" mechanism be introduced in the music section?
A. It will not be introduced.

Q. What is the maximum number of characters allowed for comments at voting time?
A. 200 full-width characters. [or 400 ASCII characters.]

Character

Q. Can I vote for Lily Black?
A. She is included in the "Lily White" option. (Note: In the "Nae Radio" broadcast on Aug 21, 2010, ZUN commented that Lily White and Lily Black are the same character.)

Q. Can I vote for Rin Satsuki?
A. As a character which does not officially exist, she will not be included.

Q. There's no option for the character I want to vote for...
A. As Seihou/Uwabami Breakers characters/ZUN are not characters that have appeared in the Touhou series, they will not be included.
In addition, inanimate objects (Yin-Yang orbs, gameplay items, etc) except for Shanghai Doll will not be included.

Q. Story of Eastern Wonderland's Stage 1 midboss and Stage 3 boss are inanimate objects, so I can understand why they're not included, but can't I vote for other PC-98 midbosses?
A. Considering that they have no proper names and are very poorly known, we have decided not to include them.

Q. Regarding the fairy mooks, will there be separate options for fairy maids, etc?
A. Characters without proper names will be included in the options named after their race.

Music

Q. How will votes for arrangements of original songs appearing on the music CDs be handled?
A. Arrangements will be displayed as separate items on the voting screen, but votes for the arrangements and their original songs will be counted together during vote totaling. Please vote for the arrangement you like the most.
(You cannot vote for both the original song and the arrangement.)

Q. How will "Love-Colored Magic" and "Love-Colored Master Spark" be handled?
A. Please refer to the table of arrangements with different names which will be counted together with their original songs.

Q. Aren't "Bloom Nobly, Ink-Black Cherry Blossoms ~ Border of Life" and "Border of Life" different arrangements of the same song?
A. In this poll, they are treated as different songs.

Other

Q. Are there any plans to include the spell card poll?
A. It will not be implemented this time.

Hell yes, I'm glad this is back again. Just saw your thread on shrinemaiden, and coincidentally enough I did the threads over there for the 9th and 7th (1) (2) contests.

Anyway, voted for:

659485328neec.png

Satori as #1. Music vote was (in no order):

1. Satori Maiden ~ 3rd Eye
2. Illusionary Night ~ Ghostly Eyes
3. Septette for the Dead Princess
4. Fall of Fall ~ Autumnal Waterfall
5. The Fantastic Legend of Tohno
6. Lullaby of Deserted Hell
7. Broken Moon (SWR)

Here's who I voted for

1. Usami Renko
2. Maribel Hearn
3. Kijin Seija
4. Kazami Yuuka
5. Ibaraki Kasen

I'd have voted Seiran in if I could.

For music I chose:
1. Far Side of the Moon
2. Unknown Flower ~ Mesmerizing Journey
3. Beware the Umbrella Left There Forever
4. Maple Wise
5. Barrier of the Ame no Torifune Shrine
6. Inchling of the Shining Needle ~ Little Princess
7. Last Occultism ~ Esoterist of the Present World

(Admittedly the last one is to pad the list out)

I wonder who'll win the character polls, I do hope it's Koishi.

My picks
Characters
1. Seiga Kaku
2. Kasen Ibaraki
3. Toyosatomimi no Miko
4. Tewi Inaba
5. Yuuka Kazami

Music
1. Locked Girl ~ The Girl's Secret Room
2. Emotional Skyscraper ~ Cosmic Mind
3. Septette for the Dead Princess
4. Capital City of the Flowers in the Sky
5. Cinderella Cage ~ Kagome-Kagome
6. Faith is for the Transient People
7. Desire Drive

This is the first time I've voted. Had to rely on Google Translate + my own memory to figure out who to pick. Really hope I didn't vote for the wrong person lol I found it much tougher to vote on music than on characters for some reason.

Also the results in Google Translate for some characters names are kinda funny (like Seija's translated name)

I feel a little bad abandoning DDC for the LLK demo, especially after all that work making the OT for it. But LLK is frankly way more fun than DDC so far, and the lack of full English for DDC does still leave a bad taste in my mouth.

Finally got around to voting in the poll. It's too difficult :/

1. Marisa Kirisame (obviously)
2. Patchoulli Knowledge
2. Suika Ibuki
2. Fujiwara no Mokou
2. Rin Kaenbyou

I really needed more slots but oh well. Also didn't care much for rankings past number one since they all count for a single point ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

For music:

X. Beloved Tomboyish Girl (Hisoutensoku Mix)
X. Septette for the Dead Princess (Embodiment of Scarlet Devil)
X. Futatsuiwa from Sado (Hopeless Masquerade Mix)
X. Locked Girl ~ The Girl's Secret Room (Embodiment of Scarlet Devil)
X. Broken Moon (Scarlet Whether Rhapsody)
X. Captain Murasa (Undefined Fantastic Object)
X. Tomorrow Will Be Special, Yesterday Was Not (Mountain of Faith, though the Hisoutensoku mix is great as well)

Selecting the music was far more difficult than the characters. I noticed a lot of them come from the fighting games. Hisoutensoku's entire soundtrack is pretty much golden. I'm still unhappy with the list since there's so many more tracks I wanted to include on there such as Wind God Girl from SWR, both Love-Coloured Master Spark and Love-Coloured Magic, Akutagawa from Hopeless Masquerade, Walking the Streets of a Former Hell, any of the Maiden's Capriccio tracks, Faith is for the Transient People, Paradise ~ Deep Mountain and.. I should stop since it's not gonna end.

I haven't even listened to the standalone music CDs with Merry and Usami.

I'll have some thoughts on the results when my head starts working again. Probably a ton of errors in the above. Should be fixed now.

Wow, Reimu's 1st place tyranny is over. Hurray!

Music wise, man, I think UN Owen Was Her is the most overrated music. It's good, but there are so much other ones I like better.

I'm getting a strong feeling that 14.5 was a big factor in Koishi hitting first place. I'm more interested in seeing if she keeps that position next poll

Momiji's rank is pretty crazy for a portraitless midboss. So consistent too.

Seiga's just getting worse over time tho :/

I was never under the impression that Koishi was so well liked so this came as a surprise to me (and also I haven't followed previous popularity polls). Hartmann's Youkai Girl also got third in music polls, so weird.

I've tried to avoid voting for the popular music choices. People need to give U. N. Owen Was Her a rest.

Think that's all the typos sorted now.
- Seija's leap from 56th to 27th and becoming the most popular DDC character is a terrible [glorious] result and the worst [best] change in this poll. Let's aim for the bottom [top] next time.
- Koishi, please stop mindscrewing the voters, thanks. She's not even the best satori, let alone the best character.
- There're a bunch of other things I could complain about, but out of everything, Kanako being the least popular Windows final boss probably stings the most.
- Two of my votes (Seija, Nue) actually ended up causing/resolving ties, so that's pretty neat.
- Mai is more than 15 points better than Yuki.

I looked at the music poll, but doing 450 results is lol nope.

The first game in the Play,Doujin! programme, Gensou no Ronde for PlayStation 4 has been released.

Official homepage with trailer:
http://www.cubetype.com/works/gensoRondoPs4/

PlayStation Store page - 3000 yen, 216MB:
https://store.playstation.com/#!/ja-jp/cid=JP0704-CUSA02582_00-PS4GAME000000001

The game is a clone of Senko no Ronde. The original PC version was reputed to be not very good, but the developer has promised new content and full-scale improvements for the PS4 version.
I loved Senko no Ronde and that trailer certainly looks faithful to it, so I'd be all over this if I had a PS4. And a JPN account, presumably.

It's been a long while since the last batch of translated doujinshi! There isn't much this time either, but it does include the very heartrending If I Were to Die Today from everyone's favorite Mori no Hon!

Most enjoyable of the bunch was (unusually) the Vivit Gray one. Take that, unfortunate children!

Also if Sakuya died then it'd leave more space for better PCs, so I'd be totally supportive of it.

Not that I really mind Shinoasa's usual MokouxKeine doujinshi, but I also wish the author would make more doujinshi like this or the Renko and Maribel one.

I wish there were a rotation for the 3rd and 4th playable character spots so that the newcomers would get a chance to shine.

It never stops haha. He does such a good job, I love these.

Most fun part about the videos is recognizing the spell cards and attacks from the game

For anyone interested, an English translation for Fantasy Kaleidoscope episode 5 is out.
I've always wanted to watch this series, I remember when I looked it was tough finding them in an organized way. I'll get to it soon hopefully.

The Immortal Who Saw the Death of The Universe (Touhou doujinshi) by ALISON

An interesting and nicely written story about how the three immortals of the Touhou universe are dealing with their predicament as the world is coming to an end around them. Especially liked how the author mixed hard physics with the more magical elements, notably the nature of their invulnerable bodies.

Art is cute as well, and all in color, too.

On a side note, I found the fact that Mokou was slouching on Keine's grave darkly adorable~

Overall I greatly enjoyed this strangely grim yet cute doujinshi. There's apparently a continuation. Eagerly awaiting for it~

Jesus that doujin was really disturbing. Especially considering Alison generally does really silly stuff.

No clue how something can be that cuddly and super morbid and scary at the same time. It's scary stuff.

As mentioned by Zweizer, the whole series is actually fairly morbid. It's just that most of the horror is in the background and only upon closer inspection do you realise Gensoukyou and Future Japan from the music CDs are really messed up places.

Touhou 15 Jacket is out! Let the speculation commence!

New girl looks like a dragon. And considering the boss of 14.5, I'm going out on a limb and saying it's a Hearn.

Also speculation on my part, but it appears that one of the boss could be Reimu (considering the ofuda and the yin yang orbs) suggesting perhaps that each PC may face off against their counterparts.

So the release is confirmed for the C88? ZUN wasn't so sure about that some time ago, nice.

I say nice but the truth is I'm 100% not ready for this game it will be hard as balls and I'll suffer so much I can't wait.

I had so much fun with the LLK demo, far more than I ever got from DDC. I'm really looking foward to this game. And I also hope that it gets an official Western (if not English...*sigh) release.

I think The Rabbit has Landed is in my Top 3 favorite Stage 1 boss themes.

Heh, right after I went to town with an editorial about the series' terrible treatment in the US.

Looks great.

Link me up, Tatsuya.

Wait, there was a 14.5? That has completely gone under the radar for me. Good to see Sanae back, she comes in a close 3rd behind Youmu and Sakuya.
