Does anime fanservice ever keep you from recommending an anime?

I think Extollere post was sarcasm guys.

It's not. I don't really find the show to be that gratuitous once you settle into it and realize the majority of the fanservice is either played for jokes or storyline, and not to titillate. If baring your body as a sign of confidence makes some uncomfortable then the problem is on them, and not the show or my recommendation. But people call me insane sometimes.

The thing with series like kill la kill, dragons crown, and
image.php
is that they RELISH in the smut with full confidence are not afraid to admit that they want to prioritize art/designs first over plot/worldbuilding. Most people aren't going to be upset with a series whose first episode showcases the character in a g string since they tell the viewers what they are from day 1. BUT if another anime, whose sole intent is to showcase the wonderful world of self insert man saving the world from evil, has a hot springs episode to "lighten up the mood" amidst something relatively serious, many people are going to have issues with that.

This as well.

Ohh, I remember this one because there was this one day at University when I was curious about the anime group, I wanted to see what kind of people I could meet there since I was fresh off Death Note and reading D.Gray-Man at the time, I believe. I went into the classroom they were at and they were playing this Gurren Lagann show, which was fine till one part where they kept focusing on the boobs and the butt of the girl. I was like no fucking way I'm putting up with this shit and nope'd the fuck outta there.

Big shame because that show still has one of the best final fights/endings in all of anime.

Yep. It's a contextual thing, and indeed, where it's most often awkward is when there's just no context for it whatsoever beyond 'hey look, fanservice!'. Ass shots in Keijo are expected, ass shots in Attack on Titan will have people scratching their heads.

It's weird because it feels like older series seemed to have a better grasp on integrating this stuff. Rewatched early Dragonball lately, and it's weird just how... novel it is that Goku is genuinely, consistently dumb in all things sexual. Today he'd be flustered for reasons he does not understand and tripping into Bulma every other scene.

I drop a show instantly the second awkward and/or distasteful fanservice occurs (and it's almost ALL awkward and/or distasteful,) much less recommend it to others.

I stuck with Gurren Lagann despite a couple rough spots (Yoko and some really pointless revealing shots of Nia come to mind,) and ended up loving it, but couldn't stomach Kill la Kill because, even if the entire premise is to be over-the-top with it, it still made me feel disgusting for watching. It's like the average anime watcher is assumed to be a pathologicaly sexually frustrated adolescent boy with anger and boundary issues, or a middle-aged man with all the same plus arrested development. I don't understand how 99% of shows aren't personally insulting to the people who eat them up.

Honestly I have a hard time recommending Berserk to people because I don't know what their reaction to all the sexual content would be. Like, it's a minor detail in the grand scheme of the plot but I think it can be off-putting to some, especially since it is straight up rape in more than one occasion. I guess it is an opposite scenario to fanservice though?

Is Kill la Kill the anime with the boobs dodging bullets?

Pretty sure that's High School of the Dead.

Yea, as good as Berserk is, you definitely gotta add some major caveats to it...

Yes if that's content someone doesn't like I won't mention it. Which is why despite me liking Kill la Kill or Prison School, I won't recommend them to someone unless they don't care about it's risque nature.

Thankfully plenty of new anime are being made that doesn't have fanservice that I can recommend.

I'm generally more comfortable recommending Berserk because sexual assault in Berserk, for the most part, has the sort of consequence and gravity that I would expect of a reasonably mature treatment of the subject matter. I would go as far as to say the story of Berserk is very much the story of survivors of rape and how they cope.

That said, there's some cringey shit from the Black Swordsman Arc, even if it's somewhat understandable given the author wrote it when he was like 16.

To those of you saying they can't find good anime that don't have fanservice: the three shows I'm watching this season (Tsuki ga Kirei, The Eccentric Family, Sakura Quest) have no fanservice in them. They weren't difficult to find, and there are even more shows without fanservice that I'm not watching.

The old TV series is perfectly fine as far as I'm concerned. The nudity that is there doesn't feel out of place (the 'body warming' scan be argued of course) but more importantly doesn't feature leering, creepy perspectives.

Note, I wouldn't say the same to the manga which eventually starts to revel in nudity and torture porn and I haven't seen the new anime adaptation but can't imagine it does anything good to to begin with.

The Hoody guy and bros showering scene are probably the reasons I liked it lol. They were hilarious

Prison School is a sex comedy. Fanservice is the whole point. A pretty bad example to OP's question.
Thats exactly why I was able to watch it. If the show was about anything else and had those moments I would have just cringed and turned it off.

There's fanservice involving adult looking women and then there's extremely uncomfortable fanservice involving nudity and extremely close ass and crotch shots (that leave very little to the imagination) of 10 to 12 year old girls. I can ignore the first one if the rest of the show is good and would probably recommend it in a heartbeat, but the second one makes me queasy; it can be Shakespeare and I'd still nope the fuck out. I tried No Game No Life on a recommendation, and I'm still scarred by that gratuitous crotch shot in the first episode.

This is probably more of where im at. Boobs and Sexual things doesnt automatically bother me .Like Ghost in the shell has random nudity, it never bothered me. Ninja Scroll had weird sex (?) It didnt bother me. Shigurui has random sex scenes coming out of nowhere but like half of those scenes are supposed to be uncomfortable.

But then we have things like Highschool DXD with matrix boobs or any modern anime with highschool girls monster boobs or something like that. Pretty much ever modern Anime that ive been recommended has been more like this.

But half of that might just be because I dont like "silly" anime and thats pretty much what everything is now

The monogatari series is a perfect example of a show that wants things both ways and as a result ends up being an impossible sell. On the one hand, the Kanbaru story is excellent and tragic and has amazing action. On the other hand, the angles and shots on Kanbaru herself aren't the least bit subversive of standard male gaze fanservice. This pattern repeats for every other girl on the show. It gets worse in Nise. And again worse in Kizu.

The Monogatari series is an extremely hard sell. It would take very particular types of people, that aren't already anime fans, to like it. Let's be honest here. It is pretty much artistic porn with great dialogue.

Prison School has one of the best stories in anime, but...yeeeeeah.

Prison School is so great because of the fanservice. It's not just a major part of it, everything pretty much revolves around it. It's an exaggerated to infinity show about five horny teenagers in an all girls school full of girls with model-like characteristics. It would have been a waste to not have fanservice with that art, that setting and that style of comedy that it attempts and nails. Everything fits like a glove.

There are PLENTY of shows you could safely recommend to anyone.

Baccano! is also definitely one of them.

It keeps me from watching Anime. Like everything new that has been recommended to me is childish or full of fanservice. I think the only anime that I enjoyed with fanservice was Prison School. Im not even sure why I enjoyed that show though lol.

I usually just like anime like Shigurui, Monster or Ergo Proxy. But Anime like that doesn't seem to exist anymore

Mushishi is an oldy but goody.

I would recommend No Game No Life to all my friends that have watched/enjoyed a few anime if it wasn't for the fanservice. I know that it's doing so in jest and parody, but I don't think that'd stop them from being creeped out when they watched it.

Eh. It is what it is. I remember screening Ranma OAVs for my high school classmates.

What a fun, wholesome premise that totally doesn't make me throw up in my mouth and judge fans of the show, no sirree.

Well, that isn't the premise at all, but yes, feel free to throw up, as that scene was indeed uncomfortable. It was not at all meant to titillate though, at the very least.

There's fanservice involving adult looking women and then there's extremely uncomfortable fanservice involving nudity and extremely close ass and crotch shots (that leave very little to the imagination) of 10 to 12 year old girls. This really. There's all sorts of horniness in shows like Game of Thrones for example. But anime's bad rap comes from it utilizing underage girls for its fanservice, which is entirely unnerving.

But even disregarding that, anime fanservice often makes use of the laziest and corniest tropes.

Seriously I don't know what the fuck is going on in the medium or its fandom anymore. I wish your average episode of a popular anime didn't have to come with a "here is the part for you to jerk off to, you socially isolated pedophile" section sprinkled in.

And I wish the fans weren't just like "hey it comes with the territory, whatchagonnado?"

I mean I know there is anime and manga that is straight up erotica, and that's cool. But that doesn't explain why your average action adventure show has to have its little "and now for some sexualized children" parts.

yes.
but so do guns
or violence
or romance.

aka if I know someone doesn't like an aspect I won't recommend shows with that aspect.

In general though if I think someone will enjoy the themes despite fanservice I will still recommend stuff with just a fanservice warning such as no game no life.

just what is anime anyway, really? i see it all over the interweb.

animated cartoons created to air in Japan.
(can't say created in japan because a lot of anime is outsourced anymore)

Fanservice is the worst thing that has happened to anime.

I am totally fine with having a woman in sexy clothing, but JESUS CHRIST, THERE'S NO NEED TO SLAP HER BREAST OR HER BUTT INTO MY FACE EVERYTIME SHE'S ON SCREEN.

If that's what needed to keep the viewers attention then you probably have a shit story to tell.

There are two kinds of anime fans:

The ones who calmly navigate through all the fanservice-laden ones and solely seek out the shows that have no fanservice:

And there are those that do not give a fuck if it has fanservice, and slowly build up a tolerance to it:

Recommending anime comes with the risk of being perceived as a pervy weirdo baked in, I don't know why you would want to reinforce that view.

If I recommend Anime to people, I just tell them watch Psycho-pass and stop there, until I specifically tell you to watch another show.

Fanservice both keeps me from watching a lot of anime and keeps me from recommending the anime that I do watch.

"Hey, you should check out this totally serious and interesting series that I'm watching! Oh, but there's one thing... the show's attitude towards sexuality -- and, indeed, women as a whole, it seems -- is really juvenile and you'll be reminded of that fact at least once an episode, if not for entire episodes of the show's single season run."

Slashlen

It doesn't, unless I already know they won't like it for that reason. I do try to mention it. Different people have different tolerance levels for fanservice, and that's fine.

By the way, "a parody of fanservice" is still fanservice. It's just the latest of many lame and contrived excuses that have been used in the past to shoehorn oversexualizing female characters.

"Women have breasts! Hilarious."

No. If people are going to be prudish enough to complain about it I don't want to be friends with them in the first place.

Well it is kinda funny that women have breasts.

I think Kill La Kill is fantastic. One of the best anime series I've ever seen.

I've never recommended it to anyone I know in real life and can't imagine doing so.

In general, I hate fan service and find it to be pretty deplorable. It keeps me from a lot of the genre. That show just got through the filters somehow with its incredible animation, original world, hilarious cast, and awesome music.

It's uncanny how often I see this argument get brought up as an excuse whenever someone critiques something for having fanservice.

Yeah. Along with tropey writing and plot armor, I'm pretty much over anime as a whole.

The "anime twitter" community ruined my respect for a lot of the fans too.
