LANSING, Mich. -- A Michigan House leader on Friday requested an investigation into allegations that state Rep. Todd Courser orchestrated the distribution of a fictional email claiming he had sex with a male prostitute in a bid to conceal an extramarital relationship with a fellow Michigan lawmaker.

In audio recordings obtained by the newspaper, Courser, R-Lapeer, said the email was designed to create "a complete smear campaign" about him and Rep. Cindy Gamrat, R-Plainwell, so a revelation about their relationship would seem "mild by comparison."

"I need a controlled burn," Courser, a father of four children, said repeatedly throughout the conversation, according to CBS Detroit. "I need it to be over the top."

The socially conservative legislators both are married and have children.

Ben Graham, who served as a House aide, recorded Courser in mid-May directing him to send Republican activists and operatives an email that would appear to be from an anonymous political enemy that said Courser had been "caught behind a Lansing nightclub" having sex with a man.

After Graham rejected the request, Graham said he had duties removed and was fired by Courser by early July. The sexually explicit email was received by Republicans on May 20 and 21, the two days following Courser's meeting with Graham. During the meeting, Courser read aloud portions of a draft email.

Damn, that's pretty Machiavellian. Hide a real scandal by creating a false scandal. Everyone would have been so worked up about the lie, which he probably created in a way that would have made it easy to counter, that they would have missed the truth. And even if they had discovered the truth it could have been mistaken for a dirtslinging campaign after he had dealt with the lie.

This could actually have worked if the aide had agreed to go along with it and no one else leaked it.

So.. not the Onion? Amazing world we live in where gay sex scandals involving homophobes are more commonly accepted than garden variety affairs.

Angry Grimace

Two cannibals are eating a clown. One turns to the other and says "does something taste funny to you?"
How does this make any sense to anyone

lol que?

"how do i get out of admitting i had consensual sex with a woman? I KNOW! I'll say i had gay sex instead! it's only gay if balls touch!"

Americans under 30 are far, far less forgiving of extramarital affairs than their parents were, especially when judging married men's participation in affairs. Even when it's just a committed SO type relationship and not a marriage, we have a low view of cheaters in a world where the stigma attached to breaking clean and moving on is so reduced.

The email would come from a supposed opponent. That way they could simply say the allegations of an affair were part of a smear campaign.

The sex had to be bananas-dynamite-nuts good.

You don't risk so much, and go to such lengths for run of the mill sloppy top.

He was American Beauty-ing that woman.

i know, but in today's age anything sticks for a while. and people often perceive as sign of smoke as a sign of fire.

ESPECIALLY if it's a conservative individual.

But.. having sex with a male prostitute would fall under the purview of extramarital affairs, no? I get that it was supposed to just be allegations, but it seems ludicrous that this plan was even considered for a second. If they wanted to couch the affair in another scandal, why not something, I dunno, that isn't an affair at all? Instead if both affairs had come out it would've painted him as some sort of repressed, free loving serial cheater (or "bi-sexual porn addicted sex deviant" as it seems the objective was). What in the world was his out? Or is it just that he's so out of touch he actually thought that no one would believe he was involved in a gay sex scandal?

Twist: He really did have a homosexual encounter behind a club. The heterosexual affair is damage control.

Now this is actually a so-crazy-it-just-might-work plan. Create a fake scandal about creating a fake scandal to cover up the real thing. Though his political career would be over in either case, his image as a hetero Christian moralist would be only somewhat tarnished.

Interesting thought; but do you have any links or anything?

Only thing I could find googling for cheating and under 30 is an article talking about how rampant cheating is these days for 20-somethings:

I almost wish that he hadn't been caught so quickly. I mean, how far was he going to take that lie? Would he have made some claim about praying the gay away eventually? Although that would probably cause some kind of "stand by your man" situation with his wife where he wouldn't have time for an affair anymore.

I guess what I'm saying is that I wish this could have turned into some kind of reverse scandal where the lie just snowballs and the guy ultimately has to start fake dating gay men so no one finds out about his affair and lying about his affair.

Ugh the possibilities.

I think youve lost the plot.
