2013 (entire year) NPD Predictions - Closes Feb 4th

What is NPD?: NPD is one of the main retail tracking firms in the U.S., and also about the only one who specifically goes into detail on video games sales. This thread is to predict what the NPD hardware sales will be for the upcoming year.
What do I win?: Bragging rights, but Sales-Agers have fun seeing how well we can do with it.

This prediction thread covers the grand total of all hardware sales as given in the NPD reports (or estimations of NPD data when there's a lack of public numbers) from January through December 2013 for the systems listed.

Prediction entries must be in and finalized by 8 p.m. EST on Monday, February 4th. Format use is absolutely required.

Do not use decimal points or "m"/"million" in your predictions. If you predict over 1 million for a system, you can use 1000K or more to get to your prediction. Be careful to use the appropriate number of place values so you don't over or understate your predictions by a factor of 10. People who have such outliers will be disqualified.

Note the new platforms this year! We're saying goodbye to the WII, and hello to the 720 and PS4. If either the 720, the PS4, or both fail to come out this year, then the results will be 0 for that system(s). If you think 720 or PS4 will not come out this year, you can just outright put 0 for that system's predicted units.

Will be interesting to see how far off I am.
I see both 360 and PS3 dropping even more, but the $99 360 plan will likely keep good sales for the system. I don't think the PS4 will come this year. I think the 3DS will do the best this year with Pokemon X & Y launching in August.

Here's hoping I get at least one of these close to what happens.

I know very little about sales and economics, so I'm just going to enter some numbers that look right and hope for the best:

[360] 3250K
[3DS] 4000K
[720] 1250K
[PS3] 2750K
[PS4] 0K

[PS3] 3000k
[PS4] 1000k
[PSV] 1000k
[WIU] 2250k

I'm seeing a difficult year for WiiU and Vita. Not knowing the launch for PS4 and 720 makes this more difficult.

Predicting sizable price cuts for PS3 and 360.

Halo 5 is definitely their "draw" for a big influx of new 720 buyers, but yeah, it'll probably be later. However, there's always a remote chance that they'll try to put something out to draw in Halo crowd at launch. Halo 4 720, Halo 5 demo (like Metroid Prime demo for DS launch), or maybe Halo 5 Prologue (like GT5 Prologue for PS3).

Does Microsoft have anything else to put at launch? Gears 4 (with Gears Judgment earlier in the year on 360)?

Expecting 360 to have moderate decline after mid-year, 3DS to show moderate growth along with Wii U, PSV to keep truckin' and PS4 launching a little bit earlier than 720.

Don't think they need a huge blockbuster for launch nor is it a good idea. MW4 will be big enough along with Forza and whatever else they have. Gears 4 will be 2014 and Halo 5 2015.

Note 1: I believe that the new hardware from Microsoft bears a chance of not actually being a console in the traditional sense. As a result, it isn't clear we will get hardware figures in the usual way from monthly NPD video game market reports. I think some of the hardware will appear in other segments.

Note 2: I still believe there will be some move to limit software resale, whether it is tagging of discs or tying every game to an online account (and requiring an always-on or nearly-always-on connection). Regardless, I think this could impose some resistance to new adoption, unless software pricing/value is handled well.

Note 3: PSV will be forced from retail by year's end. The sales listed here are mostly clearance sales. NDS will dry up at retail quietly.

Note 4: Microsoft will announce a price cut in March. New hardware before end of April.

Note 5: Sony will announce new hardware by end of April. Sony fakes me out so much on pricing, and I hate looking bad. I'll go with an E3 price cut.

Note 6: Microsoft will launch with Halo. Sony will launch with God of War. Once again, Microsoft will win.

Note 6: Microsoft will launch with Halo. Sony will launch with God of War. Once again, Microsoft will win.

These are both extremely unlikely imo, I don't think Microsoft built up 343i to the point that they could do a 1 year turnaround on Halo especially a "next gen" version, and I also don't beleive they built them up and gave them Halo only to offload the brand onto a second developer Acti/Treyarch style. I think even a Halo spinoff jrom somewhere would be unlikely.

God of War team is releasing a god of War early this year, the also wouldn't have the capacity to release another full GoW for years end. I would say it might be more likely for Sony to have a spinoff done by somone else but I still don't think it is all that probable.

What about Halo 2 HD for 720 launch? They did Halo 1 HD late 2011. I can see them trying a Halo 2 HD approach. Though I don't remember Halo 1 HD doing well in sales..

This should be the year of the 3DS, this prediction may be fairly optimistic (along with the others), but I expect Pokémon to become the biggest killer-app for the 3DS in the west, and the system should actually have more compelling software than in 2012.

PS4 prediction is purposelly low because I'm unsure about whether it will launch this year.

I believe a new revision for the PSV will keep the system afloat. A bunch of localisations and minor game announcements/releases too, but nothing to set it on fire :/

I expect those preds to completely suck comes the end of the year, but whatever :p

- I expect the 360 with a pricedrop, to sell even after the official Durango unveiling
- I expect the WII U to have moderate but steady sales
- I expect the 3DS to become the only viable handheld available, as the Vita will be forced from stores
- I expect the PS3 not having a pricecut, thus declining further
- I expect MS to go all out for the Durango launch, while I expect Orbis to be heavily supply constrained

Some reasonings:
- I expect sales of 360, 3DS, PS3 and PSV to continue their decline
- I expect WII U sales total to be about the same as WII + WII U sales of 2012
- I expect 720 sales to be hindered by availability

It seems, that I expect the HW sales total to drop for about -12% compared to 2012 regardless of new console(s). I truly hope, that I'm wrong in these.

360 - Still not dropping below $199 for regular retail base price to keep profits up and support 720 selling for a loss. Adding more to the base level, though. Maybe include a 64 GB HDD in the $199 model and a first-party game or something.
3DS - Price drop on both models. Animal Crossing becomes a real system seller in the U.S. with NOA's "we will be fired if we don't put our all into advertising this" advertising campaign and social media push.
720 - September/October launch. If it's in November, then it'll probably be 200-300K less.
PS3 - Price drop to $199, but too late in the gen to make the typical $199 *splash*. Still profitable due to hardware revision, though. Maybe introduce the 8GB HDD version as the $199 version?
PS4 - December launch. Just trying to squeeze it in to not miss the Christmas season.
PSV - Have to have a price drop this year to reach that number.
WIU - Down from 360's first year, but that's due to the poorer financial state of the country/industry currently. Lower monthly totals until Christmas where it goes a bit above 360. Price drop in August included.

Very nice, donny2112.

If (if!) the Xbox 360 were to get a price drop, in order to support a two-tier hardware strategy and smooth the transition from one platform to the other (or whatever), and Microsoft subsidizes the hardware of the new system up front with service contracts (in order to avoid taking a loss), then how much higher would do you think it could go from your prediction?

Can't see it dropping to $99 outside of possible sales, so it'd be looking at a $150 price drop on the lowest model. If it's $50 across the board, maybe up to 4500K. If they can get it down to $99, for real, then that does open up another tier of consumers, though, I think. PS2's $99 price drop was too late into the next-gen to have a big impact, but a $99 360 (without contract) this year or next could make some waves.

Predictions for the full 2013 year due by next Monday. This January NPD period is a leap month, which will cover five weeks. Therefore, there's an extra week in the full year reporting period, if your predictions go to that level of detail. :)
