Xbox One will not allow for cross-platform play with Xbox 360 users, Microsoft has told VideoGamer.com.

Speaking to us following the next-gen console's announcement last night, Xbox UK marketing manager Harvey Eagle confirmed that players "won't be able to play the same game with someone on 360 and someone on Xbox One.

"Because of the different architecture of the systems it's not possible. Your Xbox Live account on 360 will carry over to Xbox One. That same account will work on both platforms. The multiplayer won't."

Microsoft has experimented with cross-platform play on Xbox 360 and PC previously, but didn't achieve particularly good results.

Huh. While that's not completely unexpected, their "different architecture" reasoning strikes me as bullshit. Technically, it'd certainly be possible.

Bullshit imo, in theory cross-play is possible with every platform, the only requirement is a common data format, for example in a multiplatform multiplayer battleship(the board game) game there's only the need for a letter+number string message like "A3" to play, no more no less.

Replace "different architecture" with "corporate politics" and you have a much more truthful answer.

It's technically possible to have a game that lets you play with all owners of a game across Wii U, 360, PS3, One, PS4, and PC. First party won't let you do it though.

Predictable, but still bad decision: having cross-platform play would have greatily helped next gen versions of FIFA and COD selling. They rely on online communities too much, how many people will buy a Xbox One for playing FIFA/COD with much less people than on PS360, and only fancier graphics? Stupid decision. And I fear Sony will do the same.

is microsoft gonna keep the 360 alive even after xbox one is launched? they killed the original xbox as soon as the 360 was launched but at least this time around they are making a profit on the console and its selling well.

It's not bullshit in that they are most likely running the XBL servers on completely different infrastructures and such, so it makes sense that they wouldn't invest in them talking because this is a doomed to failed investment - they *do* want to phase out the 360 at some point.

Could you imagine the backlash? Live on original Xbox was still a bit niche, but on 360 it's the main bulletpoint.

Yup, since now people will be less likely to switch over when all their friends haven't switched over yet. The cross gen MP titles are a significant factor.
