At gigantic margins to boot.

Dr. Serkan Toto said:
Puzzle & Dragons maker GungHo said yesterday it reached sales of US$932 million in the first half of 2014. Profit: US$526 million.

@serkantoto @gibbogame wow. Highest operating margin in the JPX-Nikkei 400. Only four stocks in the Topix higher

This isn't money that was ever going into the console, handheld, or PC market in the first place anyway.

We might as well look at what the profits were for casino gaming companies. Its as relevant as data about gungho.

This kind of thinking is why the Japanese market is collapsing.

For all of the negativity iOS/Android gaming can get, Puzzle & Dragons is a legitimately enjoyable game. I make sure to log in/play every day.

It hands out free Magic Stones [the in-game currency] very often, so it's not necessary at all to spend actual money if you don't wish to [although I've spent a bit, mostly for Godfests that interested me]. In addition, there's a lot of monsters for you to collect, and more are added at a steady pace, with previous ones getting new evolutions and/or adjustments to their skills.

It's a lot of fun.

Honestly, I wouldn't say this for most companies, but Gungho kinda deserves it. You can tell a lot of PAD is built with love and care. The arts are amazing, too. Let's hope Murako gets a lot of that money :p

gungho...

Why is puzzle and dragon so addictive? It's basically a slot machine, and eventually you convince yourself that you can "win" based on your monsters.

I play way to much P&D... I probably should get help, it's not healthy.

Hopefully it gives Gungho confidence in their console endeavors. They clearly make stuff people like and already made a successful game on 3DS. Keep building the empire I say.

Gung Ho has been doing a lot of stuff right, and has been putting some top flight, yet modestly budgeted titles out there on several platforms (I myself have both Ragnarok Odyssey releases, Dokuro, and I played a ton of Piccotto Knights when that came out).

Are they the ones publishing Let It Die?

They own Grasshopper.

That Acquire money well spent.

My frothing demand for more Wizardry games increases.

Neither have I, lol. Is it japnese only game?
It's not Japanese-only. It was localized in English, and is currently available on both iOS and Android.

Essentially, it's a puzzle game where you collect/level up monsters. These monsters have different skills and abilities that are, often-times, suited for a specific purpose. It can become addicting to go after that elusive team you're trying to build, especially when a few of them are REM [Rare Egg Machine] pulls. REM pulls are eggs/monsters that cost five Magic Stones each but, as I said, the game is pretty generous at giving you out free ones, if you're patient. Wait to pull during a Godfest, though, as the odds of getting the specific monsters present in it are increased to 3x the normal rate.

It's highly addicting.

Hang on a minutw, you telling me that game cost half that to make? Fucking HOW!
Was it made by bungie?
That's the cost that's required to run Gung-Ho for six months along with any advertising and margin dilution effects like cost of manufacturing physical goods or licensing fees.

It's a mobile game that also exists in NA and EU. In NA though, I think Brave Frontier is a bit more popular, but it still has a very strong following here. It's an oddly skill-based dedication required game. It's also heavily luck based where you will be motivated to spend money to increase your chances of getting those key monsters that will bolster you into the late game, but it's not required. I personally haven't spent any money and have been lucky enough for an Umiyama team that can beat quite a bit of the end-game dungeons.

The game also has a lot of massive updates, and they do a damn good job making each update feel exciting. The art just keeps on getting better, too.

GungHo is good publisher. They make billions from Pazudora yet they doesn't fuck over their niche studios by closing them or forcing them to do mobile stuff.

You're right, completely separate markets. The simultaneous collapse of handheld markets in the west and console markets in the East is just a coincidence.

Also highly time consuming.

The harder boss fights can take up to 40 minutes - hour if you're not super prepared/IAP.
Hence why I moved onto lighter offerings such as QuizRPG.
Haha, yeah. It can be.

Thankfully you can easily quit and resume at any point, so you're not forced to sit there the entire duration. I've heard of some that sat there for hours [after they entered with the wrong team, such as not bringing poison or an armor-breaker] defeating a boss, just so they wouldn't lose the amount of Stamina they spent on it.

Insane.

I've never even heard of Puzzles and Dragons or that company

Outside of Japan they're a relatively niche dev/pub but they're definitely juggernauting and blowing up.

They operate several studios include Suda 51's - Grasshopper Manufacture and prior to them striking gold with P&D they were prolly best known in the West for the Ragnarok Odyssey series.

Softbank purchased majority control of GungHo in 2013 and as a result - they sorta also own 51% of power player - Supercell

With P&D alone making about $5 million per day they're a big reason why japan is the biggest mobile market (software) in the world. Nintendo am cry.

I, for one, welcome our new gaming overlords.

By the way, Nirolak, when is your move to NCL been approved? Wave this stuff in his face. 😒

While there was certainly some luck involved with P&D Gung-Ho has been great with customer retention and content updates. They also try to diversify. I may not like the business model for their games but they seem like a better managed company than the other nepotist or milestone missing publishers in Japan currently.

Most of the cost for a smash mobile hit like this is in User Acquisition (read: marketing). TV ads for Puzzle & Dragons (and other hit mobile games) are extremely common in Japan, and cost a ton. To give you an idea, King spend 400 million on user acquisition last year. Though Gungho do have plenty of studios and projects outside P&D that cost money too.

Good for GunghHo! That is an absolutely amazing result in todays gaming industry. P&D is a good game, and the money mobile makes supports their other studios making console games and MMOs.

I'm still waiting for the 3DS game to get localized :( They've shown interest for almost a year with it, and since Z was the vanilla version, maybe they're just waiting and will bring out W? So I'm hoping...

Puzzle and Dragons pretty much targets the gambling (pachinko)/gacha audience; you could argue that console markets in the east haven't done a good job capturing THAT audience as the whales in that game pretty much subsidize all other players themselves.

The last time a gungho/P&D revenue topic came up I downloaded it at work to see how the hell this game made so much money.

I did no work that day. But now that I have a nexus 5 I have to restart, and I'm not sure what the best starter roll to get is anymore (plus the tedium of re-rolling to begin with). One day though.

Well deserved. I have played this game every day for well over a year and have spent under 5$ on it and still love it to this day. Will probably go down as one of my favorite games ever regardless of platform.

There is a godfest soon. reroll during that. if you get a Red Sonia you win the game.

Puzzles and Dragons is the only mobile game that I've ever felt was really, really good, so I applaud their success.
