NOFX - Punk in Drublic
Modest Mouse - Moon and Antarctica

I think every collection benefits from at least one early Ozzy record.
Blizzard of Ozz, Diary of a Madman, and Bark at the Moon are all excellent choices.

Is Bat Out of Hell 2 not out on vinyl? I tried looking online for a copy a couple weeks ago and was disappointed that I couldn't find one.

Looks like it was only released on vinyl once as a single pressing in the UK, you can still get it but because it's on a single LP instead of a double the sound is compressed to all hell with over 30 minutes per side. Not really worth tracking down a copy.

I mostly collect from garage sales and thrift stores. I don't like paying more than $2 for an album.

I flipped when I found this one:

WuKNDEU.jpg

Jay-Z - Reasonable Doubt
Bad Brains - Bad Brains
Black Flag - Damaged
Outkast - Southernplayalisticaddilacfunkymusik
Erykah Badu - Worldwide Underground

I wish I knew more off the top of my head but my iPod is back at home :/

Lame about the compression. What's the max time limit that is acceptable for a single LP before you worry about that?

Everyone needs to reissue their shit on vinyl. I really want David Gilmour's On an Island and Iron Maiden's Brave New World, but both are hundreds of dollars 'cause they were so limited.

Optimal is between 12-15 minutes, maximum generally recommended is 22 (for a standard 33 1/3 LP).

I would place Off The Wall as a way more essential album than Bad, personally. Bad is uneven at best

Cardiacs - Sing to God

FRIEND.

I wouldn't necessarily say everyone "must" own these, but here are some essentials for me:

Cardiacs - Sing to God
The Beatles - The White Album I guess?
King Crimson - Absent Lovers, or Red if live albums don't count
Kate Bush - The Dreaming
XTC - Skylarking
Brian Eno - Before and After Science

I wouldn't say "should" but I'd like everyone to own at least one Charlie Parker record. Still sounds modern and refreshing. Too bad most people just hear it as a bunch of random notes.

Exile on Main Street is a "must own".

Also no-one mentioned Patti Smith's Horses.

For the longest time I though the White Album's production was mediocre, but it really comes across on vinyl, for whatever reason.

Do what makes any of these "essential on vinyl" as opposed to other formats?

Ah I didnt mean vinyl specifically, but I buy vinyl so use LP out of habit. It does help that alof of older stuff can be had for super cheap. I mean I havea copy of Purple Rain that I paid £2 for as well as my copy of Bad was £1 haha
